Which demons can sire mortal progeny in the Realms. I know about glabrezu (draegloths), succubi (alu-fiends and cambions) and gelugons (durzagons). What else can have half-fiends as children? I'm not sure about some kinds of demons - can they mate with mortals at all?

Balors

-Wouldn't all Demons, technically? I mean, why not? You're already...doing stuff with a Demon, so does it matter if said Demon looks like a Human, or a bug?

Well, not all demons are able to "do the stuff"... physically.

Balor, marilith, glabrezu, succubi, and vrocks are known sires of half-fiends.

There are also the tanarukks (half-fiend orcs) which I think come from nalfeshnee blood. Not sure about that one.

Durzagons are not of demonic heritage (esp not gelugon). They are half-devil, half-duergar.

Cambions aren't necessarily the result of human/succubus or incubus unions only. Kaanyr Vhok of the Scoured Legion is a cambion with a marilith mother.

Edit: Nevermind about the nalfeshnee. Tanarukks are too dumb to be of nalfeshnee blood. Could be hezrou. ¯\(°_o)/¯

The Fey'ri descended from "sun elves and demons (usually succubi in male or female form)" (RoF).

As for the Tannarukks: "Tanarukks are the descendants of orcs and tanar’ri (vrocks, in particular)" (RoF).

Durzagons are not of demonic heritage (esp not gelugon). They are half-devil, half-duergar.

Yeah, and it's almost certainly a barbazu aka bearded devil, what with the poisonous beard and all. They haven't yet shown up in any official FR sources, though it is likely that they exist.

tanar'ri - probably all except manes (have no will), with some shapeshifting help

loumara - they're immaterial, have different ways

obyriths - nah, too weird, aren't created from mortal souls

spyder-fiends - yes

blood fiend, shadow demon, lilitu -yes

bebilith - yes

etc.

What's spyder fiend? And why bebilith is listed as yes? Personally, I'd say no. How can a gigantic demonic spider mate with a drow?

Thats for the FSK18 forums ;)

Well, any humanoid-shapeshifting-able demon or devil might be possible, some others even if it does not readily makes any sense. In WotSQ that large chasme thing was looking forward to a meeting with Danifae, clearly having had some previous experience.

Essentially, FC I and FC II state what is or might be possible and what not. If you go by the easiest explanations re dragons and fiends, "their magical nature" makes it possible for them to breed with nigh any other creature.

they're servants of the Queen of Chaos, probably something between obyriths and tanar'ri, they're in Monstrous Compendium Annual #4 and Rod of the Seven Parts box

according to Xanxost the slaad, one of the authors of Faces of Evil: The Fiends

My goodness, I don't know of a single mortal race with which the Abyssal fiends can't crossbreed; their natures seem able to override the most compelling biological barriers

bebiliths are solitary creatures and have different motives, but it's not not impossible, drow would be interested due to its arachnid form

Eight legs, eight eyes, eight boobies and/or pew pews. What's not to like?

And what do they state? We're only theorizing now as far as I can see it.

What about shapechanging? Do the children take into account the demonic race or the form taken at mating?

theorizing? you don't trust Xanxost?

ok, then FC I says that demons can have sex if they have the necessary ''equipment'' and some do, others don't. It says that half-fiends can be created through arcane magic or curses.

I doubt it will be ever revealed what particular demonic race has the ''equipment'', but using polymorph spells and similar anyone can have it. The children take the true form of the shapechanged parent, similar is with half-dragons.

This is just my take, so it's not FR per se... But with demons and potential offspring, I'm not sure it's about "equipment" so much as it is about power and intent. I've never viewed demons as biological entities with their own DNA and biological systems, but rather as entities (i.e. mystical energy or somesuch thing) that have the ability to take on a physical form. Entities of low power can only take on weak physical forms, and stronger entities can take on stronger forms. So even without the in-game ability to shapeshift the appropriate equipment, demons/devils of sufficient power could give a part of their "energy" in lieu of... erm... DNA. They're not "aliens" or the like, which would suggest an evolutionary path and biologies, they're demons and devils - spiritual energy beings in physical form.

I'm not saying it's biology either but there has to be some explanation. And we can't explain anything by magic/shapechanging.
So FC1 / FC2 are just saying what we already know.

So you try to figure out "something definite" of something which has not been any more specified than what is written in the Fiendish Codices? Methinks much has been answered so far and AFAIK, we know of a certain number of set-in-stone possibilities:

- mariliths (Empyrean Odyssee)
- succubi / incubi (various half-fiends, tieflings, fey'ri et al) (most likely lilitu too)
- erinyes, chain devils, amnizu, harvester devils & brachina devils (as of FC II)
- glabrezu (draegloth)
- yochlol (assumed from Drow of the Underdark talk on drow warlocks)
- chasme (assumed from WotSQ)
- various archfiends and their consorts

Just to jump into this thread with my I suppose somewhat educated opinion on the matter:

If a given fiend possesses a gender of any form, it can breed conventionally with a mortal. Lemures, nupperibos, dretches, and manes might be some of the few that can't, given how low on the fiendish totem poll they are, and probably normal larvae as well (though Hordelings and Night Hags no problem).

Whether the process leaves the mortal intact enough to give birth if they're female is another matter entirely. And some fiends consider the very act of breeding to be anathema, given its association with any sort of positive emotion ('loths having that opinion mostly).

Regardless of a distinct example being given in FC:I, WotSQ, or elsewhere I think the flavor is pretty solidly behind the notion that fiends can be randy little perversion factories if they set their minds to it. It's all about corruption.

My personal take was that Alu-fiends came from devils, and Cambions came from demons... the only problem I had with that is that Sucubus were demons...

Thank goodness 4e fixed that problem (I always thought they should be devils).

I decided that way back when I ran Greyhawk, and I carried that concept through when I started running FR. I would have went the other way with the names, but Iuz was just too much of a BBG to retcon. ;)

But nearly all fiends possess a gender, so it still leaves much trouble. What about shapechanging ones, or those that don't possess a fixed body?

Although outward appearances are usually derived from whatever forms the parents are currently in, it is not unheard of for a child of such a strange pairing to take on aspects of one or both parents 'true forms' when they reach 'maturity' (which can be an arbitrary DM-derived figure).

Also, Mental skills and 'powers' can come from either parent as well, and would appear randomly - at birth, at maturity, or perhaps even when they are 'under stress'.

When you're thinking about Fiends and mating, think 'Chaos', and all that implies (and I'm including Devils in that - their offspring aren't neccessarilly lawful.. and neither are they, I think, in 4e). In fact, there's a table in the old Runequest game for determining random abilites for 'Chaos Creatures', and I still use that in cases like this. Also, any 'Supers' game with tables for mutant powers would work, or even the rules from the Red Steel campaign can be adapted for this weird, one-of-a-kind offspring.

I'd say the best rules, in this case, are NO rules.

Indeed. Most people would assume that balors and pit fiends are male, because most if not all that we know of are spoken about as "he". We do not know whether that is a definite thing though. It is not so difficult with mariliths, who are clearly feminine.

Anyway, in my previous posts I actually thought mainly of female fiends being able to give birth to half-fiends (et al), hence the rather restricted list. There is of course a (grand) possibility that fiends may reproduce with human(oid) females and thus much of the biological "demands" may not have to be met by the "father".

Pit Fiends do indeed come in both genders. Off the top of my head, the pit fiend Lydzin, overlord of the mobile baatezu fortress known as The Relentless comes to mind. She appeared, and was illustrated, in the 2e "Hellbound: The Blood War" box set.
