Question regarding new novels

Jul 20, 2009 15:49:29 I don't read a whole lot, but I loved the ToT series. I've also noticed that having read that has made me a better DM in Forgotten Realms settings. I'm not much of a fan of Salvatore because I prefer Forgotten Realms for its lore and pantheons more than I like reading individual characters like Drizzt.Every time i check out book descriptions on like Plague of Spells or the Empyrean trilogy it's all about individual characters I know nothing about.

So can anyone recommend what books I need to read to get the most lore for my buck regarding the spell plague and all the changes from 3rd ed to 4th. My favoritist character of all time so far is Cyric, so anything specifically on when he killed Mystra and was imprisoned would be nice.

Jul 20, 2009 16:09:37 well as much as I know empyrian odyssey trilogy is the only series where mentioned mystra's murder.For the time period between 1385-1479 there is no satisfying book.try waterdeep series * Blackstaff Tower * City of the Dead * Downshadow * Mistshore

Her death and start of spellplague itself was also mentioned in "the hunted lands" trilogy as pretty much the most important thing through entire second book (surviving and troubles with it). Even do trilogy itself had nothing to do with spellplague it was integral part of the series.

At the moment nothing else rly, but I haven't had time to go through plague of spells book from abolethic sovereignty series. Guess part two will also be about it. Not 100% sure what is it about but it is suposed to be right after the spellplague so you might check that also.

Making a note to myself:
Have to find time to go through final book of Empyrian odysey and start with abolethic series.

The Empyrean Odyssey trilogy
The Haunted Lands trilogy
The Transitions trilogy
Abolethic Sovereignty trilogy

*Note, not all of the books in these trilogies have all been released as of right now.

-Note that the designers and authors themselves specifically mentioned that this time period was going to be intentionally left "blank" and "hazy", for people to make up their own details...and then promptly began filling it all in. So, as to whether or not, in the future, we'll get any more information about this transitory period, via novels taking place directly during these years, or novels referencing these years, right now, is anyone's guess. They said they weren't going to do that, but did, so, in the future, they might do it some more, or they might not.

Jul 22, 2009 23:48:34 I wondered also. Thank you for novel names and infos. I try to read and telled by others that it is still FR and nothing big is changed and real FR fans no mind changes and understood it is all still FR but I dont still get it. I read one new book, Plague of Spells, and it dont feel like FR.

Jul 23, 2009 17:44:37 Fan-Fan, I'm going to echo Elzhan_Mhair's recommendation of the Ed Greenwood Presents Waterdeep series (Blackstaff Tower, Mistshore, Downshadow, City of the Dead, more to come) . . .

Not because one of my books is in there (well, that's not the ONLY reason), but because I've read all of them and they sound like exactly what you're looking for: realms romps in the classic style, with quite serious homages to the old.

The authors know their stuff, are quite talented, and really love the setting, and all of that shows. Plus, having Ed Greenwood as one of the editors on the series has been a really good move.
