| #1seeker_of_truth_dupJul 28, 2008 19:59:32 | I'm writing up a background for a new character and have some questions about how things mesh with FR Canon. 1) I made him related to the Glanend Family which was mentioned in the Cormyr preview as one of the powerful trading forces. This is the only information I have on them, is there any more Canon lore on them? 2) I wrote that his father was begining to pursue trade with some of the Aquatic Elves of Telvanlu, but with the avoidance of sub-races I'm wondering how wise this was and whether it's likely to have to change when books start to come out. 3) Is there something in Suzail that might be described as a "Wizard's School" and is there anywhere to look for more information? 4) Is Waukeen still around and the most likely god to be worshipped by a Cormyrian merchant family? 5) How likely is a 1st level green wizard just out of training in Suzail to be approached by the War Wizards? Do they recruit only proven members? If it's likely that he's been approached where is a good place to find information about what that encounter might have been like. Thanks for any help. |

I doubt the war wizards approach individual wizards, but probably accept new members who want to sign up. There would be magical tests to prove ones sincerity in joining, and maybe a minor test or two to determine a non academy members level of training. As for the trading question... Unless the FRCS or FRPG says otherwise, I believe there will still be aquatic elves, however with the changes in their homeland (sea level dropping and what not) they may not be in any condition to conduct trade. |

I took these quotes from the Cormyr Article Mages loyal to the crown sign an agreement with the king and make a secret oath, thus becoming War Wizards. Only Ganrahast knows the true numbers of the organization. To mean that the war wizards are a secret organization, but I realize this might be totally erroneous. Do war wizards typically wear something identifying themselves? Are any war wizards adventurers who keep there status a secret from their companions? |
| #4naexJul 28, 2008 20:56:25 | I don't know about a uniform for war wizards, I have never read anything specific in those regards, and I think they are self identifying, or maybe wear a badge. The only clothing I know of is the War Wizard cloak (again IIRC). There are a group of war wizards that police the rest of them, and I know they don't, as a general rule, identify themselves as such. I imagine they have the choice of identifying themselves or not to outsiders, but any agent of Cormyr would have to be able to determine a war wizard rather quickly or else any wizard could say he/she is a member and get away with a lot of bad stuff. |
| #5necromaton_dupJul 28, 2008 21:22:20 | I know that in a 2nd edition book about Cormyr it was stated that all mages from "thaumaturgist (5th level) up must register with the crown." When registering your name, sigil, abode, and whereabouts must be reported. It was also said that Vangerdahast kept and enormous library of all the names and put great effort into keeping things current. Vangerdahast was a bit heavy handed though, things may have changed with the latest administration. I would assume however that there is still great pressure for mages (who qualify for the war wizard prestige class) to join the war wizards. |

So if I'm understanding you correctly you're saying that war wizard will likely be a paragon path and that those that take the path are members and those that don't aren't? This would mean that my first level character wouldn't have been contacted except perhaps in the same manner that a high-school freshman might be contacted by a military recruiter. |
| #7necromaton_dupJul 28, 2008 21:43:21 | That would be my understanding, yes. Service in the war wizards is not compulsory but it is heavily encouraged. |
| #8seeker_of_truth_dupJul 28, 2008 21:49:51 | Oh one more question ... 6) is there any information as to what might be at the "Mage Keep" marker on the map that is about 25 miles ESE of Suzail? |
| #9necromaton_dupJul 28, 2008 22:11:09 | Oh one more question ... Just finished looking through my second and third edition stuff, I have not yet found any mention of "Mage Keep". May be something unique to 4th ed. If anyone else knows differently, please correct me. |
