Ed's actually posted an extensive dissertation on Forgotten Realms underclothes over on Candlekeep, though it's buried in the Ask Eddie scrolls over there. Generally speaking, Realmsians wear things like breech-clouts, which are sort of loin-cloths that cover both afore and behind. Also slips (for sleepwear or under big gowns) and the petticoat underthings that people in the real world wore under big frilly dresses.

When did you very first develop Fox-at-Twilight as a character, and what were your first inspirations? How similar was she to what we see now in your novels? How did you decide on "Fox-at-Twilight" as an appellation?
I'm thinking along the lines of how Elminster was originally quite different, and how Ed says he changed him a lot... was it a similar process, in terms of fleshing her out for a novel? What was the process like?
I credit Phil with the name, not because he created it, but he prompted me to come up with something more unusual than her original name (which was Shadow or something). And no, it has nothing to do with Stephanie Meyer or her books, which I hadn't even heard of until late 2007, after DoM was aleady out.
At about the same time I was writing "The Greater Treasure," I started planning Depths of Madness, which I knew immediately was going to be about Twilight. I'm not sure I pulled it off in quite the way I hoped--Twilight worked better as a mysterious supporting character, rather than as the main character. She could be very important, but if I make her the hero of the novel, I have to answer all sort of questions about her, and that went against my mysterious concept.
Twilight remained the same from the story to DoM, though she was placed in very different circumstances in the novel (horror, rather than adventure). She became much more of a hard-@$$ in the book, because she had to be.
Twilight's transformation in Downshadow (and I won't do any spoilers, for those who haven't read it) was a cool experience for me, since I got to mature her character considerably and basically invent new things to make her more like what I wanted her to be. When she next appears, I intend to let it all pay off.

Also, what's his class setup in 4E? I kind of read it a Paladin-Gray Guard, but then I like the concept of that PrC. The image of the Paladin who started out so pure and idealistic, slowing having his ideals stripped from him as he wandered the world.
It wasn't until I actually got my hands on the 4e rules that I realized rogue/paladin hardly works at all, and I started to despair that my character had any mechanical foundation.
Then PHB2 came out, and I realized that Shadowbane was basically a pursuit Avenger, no question. The avenger basically *is* a paladin whose morality has been worn down by the cold and cruel nature of his profession. Perfect. Problem solved.
As planned in my next book--Shadowbane, Sept 2011--you'll see Shadowbane settle a little more firmly into his role as an avenger.

Twiligth didn't work for me in DoM. She was not very sympathetic imo. It's what you may get with characters that try too hard to be a lone wolf and that alienate people because they fear to get close to people around them.

She was certainly that, and I'm glad that concept at least came through. My idea was to portray her as terrifically insecure but that she'd get through it (at least a little) by the end and become able to actually deal with her problems, rather than always run away.

She was in Downshadow? Either I failed to notice her or my memory is failing me badly at the moment.
She appears in person on three occasions in Downshadow, but she's only called "Twilight" once, and that's *after* her main appearance.

Well, Twilight is a scrapper sort of fighter: swords, punches, kicks, trips, acrobatic stunts, knocking over furniture, etc. Hence, her back-up weapon is whatever's close to hand as the situation dictates.

SmartPaladin: Assuming afforability, try putting in for it early. Like, six months early. I put in for this year's GenCon in March and got it. (It was moot because they fired me like a week beforehand for a BS reason but meh. I hated it there anyway.)

With 4 products recently misteriously gone MIA (some even had previews), im a little apprensive, since WotC hasnt shown much love for FR 4Ed.
Maybe the cross-promotion, with 2 CRPGs set in FR due this year, may change things around.

I have this feeling that WotC is gonna break with the Realms name and logo. I feel that WotC is gonna attach the setting to the name Neverwinter. WotC is already removing the Realms logo for the novels, or greatly reduced it. I don't know why, but thats the impression I have been getting lately...

I hear you Erik. RA's new books have the Neverwinter Name. I think WotC is attaching the setting to a name that will draw more players.
In a way it would make sense to do that.
She will always be the Realms to me...
WotC appears to be pushing the products pretty assertively, which IMO is exactly what they should do. I hope it pays off for them, and for the setting itself--I know I've done (and am doing) my best to help!
