| #1dave_saunders_dupJan 24, 2009 18:19:06 | I remember seeing conversations about places in the FR that are like places on earth. What places in the FR are actually supposed to be from earth? |
| #2kurzonJan 24, 2009 19:30:33 | Cormyr is based on Arthurian England, Amn is based on medieval/Renaissance Spain and Calimsham is Arabia. |
| #3rauricJan 24, 2009 19:31:54 | I thought the Moonshae Isles have a very celtic Ireland/Scotland/England feel to them. |
| #4lord_karsusJan 24, 2009 20:26:06 | Mulhorand: The Imaskari "kidnapped" Egyptians. Unther: The Imaskari "kidnapped" Sumerians. -Those are the only two that I can think of off the top of my head. The Shou interlopers may or may not have been, in theory, relatives of one of the many ethnic groups in China, but that is more speculation than actual anything. |

I think quite a few places are based on various cultures in history, but in most cases the connection is fairly loose. I think Amn is supposed to be based on the Italian city-states like Genoa and Venice... with a dash of Spain during the New World exploration era. Calimshan is supposedly Ottoman or Arabic. Chessenta was iirc close to classical Greek in many ways. I keep hearing how Rashemen was supposedly based on pre-Tartar Russia, but I'm a bit sceptical. |

They are places in the Forgotten Realms that are surprisingly similar to cultures on Earth, for game design purposes, but there aren't actually connections to the actual world, like the OP is looking for. Rashemen seems a lot like Russia, for example, but it isn't in any way actually related or connected to Russia. |
