Religious Practices in the Realms

May 29, 2010 18:56:46 Reading the Cormyr saga I came across the mention of "faith-plantings" by the Chauntean faithful. As a druid/pagan I often use the practice of planting with a magical/religious mindset, but I hadn't linked that with the idea of Realms practices. When I read it, I was like..."how perfect and how beautiful."

Also this lovely wedding ceremony, the Seed Ceremony is considered legal marriage in the Realms:

She placed her palm over the seed in Rowen's hand, and they began the invocation. "Bless us, О Chauntea, as we bless this seed, that all we nurture may grow healthy and strong."

With their free hands, Tanalasta and Rowen dug a single small hole in the plot she had prepared, then the princess grabbed her waterskin and dampened the soil.

"We prepare this bed with love and joy," Rowen said.

Together, they placed the seed in the hole and covered it with dirt.

Tanalasta began the next part. "In the name of Chauntea, let the roots of what we plant today grow deep . . ."

"And the stalk stand strong . . ."

"And the flower bloom hi brilliance . . ."

"And the fruit prove abundant."

They finished together, then poured more water the planting and kissed. This time, it was Rowen who pulled Tanalasta's tunic over her head.

I also came across mention of a cleric of Tempus slicing his hand open to make a prayer with blood as the foci, much like the runic practices of the Norse, I think.

What other religious lore and rituals have you come across in your reading of the Realms?

May 31, 2010 3:20:13 Faiths and Avatars were full of them, and Prayers from the Faithful had several mentioned as well as I recall, both from 2e. As to novels, as I avoid most like the plague, couldn't say much about them.

May 31, 2010 7:49:42 I know Ed has mentioned that some faiths, like Sune, Loviatar, and Sharess, have shall we say, very intimate ceremonies.

Qilue's chapter in Silverfall, if I recall, features her riding a stone like a lover. It was in the Ardeep forest. The stone was sacred to Eilistraee, and it was part of a ritual meant to honor the goddess and bring her faithful closer to her. The ritual was received with approval, and Eilistraee made her satisfaction manifest through increased moonlight and starlight (I think). It's been ages since I read it, but that's what I recall most distinctly from Qilue's chapter (it's even the opening of her chapter).
