| #1walnutt_dupNov 16, 2008 13:57:58 | greetings all on the FR boards. I asked my players what they have always wanted to do in a DnD campaign and we decided that a pirate themed one would be great so now I am scouring the FRCG for great places for flavor and also a area that can support such a campaign without getting old and i was just wondering if you guys had any thoughts on how it might go being set in the Returned Abeir region or if you guys had any other ideas for area's thanks a whole heap |
| #2markustay63Nov 16, 2008 14:06:45 | I've completed the new Returned Abeir (Laerakond) Map and am eagerly awaiting its posting over at CK, which I am sure will be of some use to you. I've also designed a pirate-campaign region just south of that in my CK Compendium article awhile back (although in retrospect I'd like to go back and re-name some of that). That area, in my Perilous Portals article exists in the region between Katashaka and Lopango (it's basically a Realmsified 'Carribean-flavored' region). Now, according to my calculation, Lopango - which was just south of Maztica-proper, should still exist, and be right off the southern coast of Returned Abeir. That makes a really cool Pirate region just a couple hundred miles south of the RA campaign area, with poratls leading to other intersting locales around the Realms. You can download the Compendiums HERE - my map and article are in #9. I'll try to have a larger map showing the precise location of that region in regards to Retrurned Abeir and the surrounding regions by the end of the day for you. |
| #3walnutt_dupNov 16, 2008 14:23:50 | hey thanks this will be a great help |
| #4markustay63Nov 16, 2008 17:50:49 | This took me somewhat longer then expected - please read the notes below the map for reasons why I have shifted Evermeet south (to better fit 4e lore). Returned Abeir and it's placement. I stitched together several maps I had, and you will note where the map from the CKC article fits iinto things just below Lopango. |
| #5JohnLynchNov 16, 2008 17:56:32 | Now, according to my calculation, Lopango - which was just south of Maztica-proper, should still exist, If its the region I'm thinking of it should exist yes (IMO). Returned Abeir had the basic shape of Maztica (from what maps I can find) but unlike Maztica it was an island rather then part of a continent. IMO only the Maztica part of the continent should have disappeared, letting the north and southern portions of it still exist across a small ocean journey. Is there any information on Lopango? A google search wasn't very helpful. |
| #6JohnLynchNov 16, 2008 18:03:57 | This took me somewhat longer then expected - please read the notes below the map for resons why I have shifted Evermeet south (to better fit 4e lore). Holy crap! Thanks for that Markus. I've been wanting a map like this for some time now (the only way it could be better is if it had all of Toril :p). The closest map i could find wasn't all that great IMO. For example on that map Katashaka was Terra Incognita. Is the Katashaka map you've created (mountain ranges, grasslands, desert) home brew? Or is that information somewhere? The best I could find was a very brief mention of the name. If it is homebrew then I've just found a new name for my Xen'drik continent :D |
| #7markustay63Nov 16, 2008 18:04:39 | There are some very vague stuff in the Maztica material (mostly a desolate volcanic region with some rather evil Halflings IIRC, along with some desert-dwelling Dwarves). There was a module - the city of Gold or some such - that detailed quite a bit north of maztica (you can see that bit on the map). I figure anyone who still wants to use Maztica can still do so with those north and south bits - there's no reason why large groups of natives couldn't have had some time to flee to those remaining areas (perhaps their gods warned them?) In fact, taking those cultures and and re-distributing them without all the Amnian/derivitive history attached might be a good way to 'freshen-up' that fluff. |

Or is that information somewhere? The best I could find was a very brief mention of the name. I started Katashaka awhile ago, and I slightly modified it's outlines to better conform with the Map of Nyambe, since that seems to be the recommended accessory for use with katashaka. Using Xendrik works for me as well - all that terrain you see there is just my adaption and therefore homebrew - anyone is free to place anything they want there (the name of the large Island is also my add). I'll throw a scale on that, since people might find it usful. ![]() |
| #9JohnLynchNov 16, 2008 18:22:50 | Thanks a lot Markus :D |
| #10markustay63Nov 16, 2008 18:35:25 | It now has a scale on it, and when I did that I realized Returned Abeir was a bit too small, so I increased it's size now. That link works for the newer version. ;) |
| #11merrikcaleNov 16, 2008 21:53:49 | There was a 2E Pirates of the Sea of Fallen Stars book, that had terrible art and was probably one of the weaker books in its series. However, if you do want a pirate campaign it may be of some help and you could probably get it relatively cheap on ebay |
| #12markustay63Nov 17, 2008 2:00:56 | Do you mean the book that had a picture with a map of MYSTARA in the background? :D |
| #13brimstone_blackheart_dupNov 18, 2008 16:58:20 | Are you serious? |
| #14markustay63Nov 18, 2008 23:35:28 | Yup, this Clyde Caldwell art appeared on page 86 -![]() Beautiful painting, but you'll note the map background - that's Mystara, and this art originally appeared on The Minrothad Guilds - a product for the D&D setting (pre-1e AD&D). I should know, because I have said product - and Ed Greenwood did the book on the halflings. :D |
| #15brimstone_blackheart_dupNov 19, 2008 3:26:23 | Interesting I never noticed that before. |
| #16markustay63Nov 19, 2008 10:54:39 | Ergo, we now have a canon connection between Mystara and Toril, because a map of Mystara appeared in a Faerûnian product. :D Also, there was another product called The Orcs of Thar - Ed borrowed bits and pieces of Mystara for the Realms. Also Avarials and Aranea originated with that setting - LOTS of connections. |
| #17brimstone_blackheart_dupNov 19, 2008 11:35:52 | So Mystara is in the Center of Abeir-Toril? |
| #18markustay63Nov 19, 2008 11:57:14 | No, that would be impossible - Mystara has it's own sub-setting that is in the center of it's world - The Hollow World campaign setting. It was also the home of the Red Steel campaign setting - one of the few TSR worlds nearly as well-developed as FR and with nearly as many sub-settings. Personally, I think if they had dusted that off and made it the 4e flagship setting, it would of been filled with WIN. It may have even brought back old players into the fold along with the new - something they had hoped would happen with FR and didn't (at least not as much as they had anticipated, IMHO). THAT world was better for shoe-horning stuff into, and the Red Steel crap lends itself to Spellscars nicely. Oh well... opportunities lost, as they say... |
| #19brimstone_blackheart_dupNov 19, 2008 12:17:43 | So its the black holes of campaign settings? Mayhap Abeir-Toril, then Mystara, then whatever else, so on ad nuseum. If I remember correctly The Forgotten Realms had alot of other settings attached to it. |
| #20markustay63Nov 19, 2008 13:32:59 | Ed also borrowed aspects of Narnia and Conan's Hyboria (Stygia) for his world, which of course TSR had to remove for obvious IP issues. Still, I never really looked at FR as the 'everything goes setting', even though you could pretty-much take stuff from anywhere. Mystara was a lot more generic, even more-so then Greyhawk, perhaps. |
| #21BadCatManNov 19, 2008 19:09:46 | Yup, this Clyde Caldwell art appeared on page 86 - So, it's not a lot different from the Bloodstone Lands art appearing on the Blood & Magic PC game (in the Utter East), or the pictures throughout the Grand History Of The Realms that show warforged pretending to be dragons, or Eberronian priests of the Sovereign Host. |
| #22merrikcaleNov 19, 2008 21:49:45 | Yup, this Clyde Caldwell art appeared on page 86 - The halfling book is the Five Shires. That Minrothad Guilds book which I have came out well after the release of AD&D 1e. Cool sourcebooks really |
| #23markustay63Nov 20, 2008 8:35:31 | My aside (in the parenthesis) was meant to explain what version of D&D I was referring to, NOT when the Minrothad Guilds came out. :P So, it's not a lot different from the Bloodstone Lands art appearing on the Blood & Magic PC game (in the Utter East), or the pictures throughout the Grand History Of The Realms that show warforged pretending to be dragons, or Eberronian priests of the Sovereign Host. I kinda like the priest of Pelor myself - I think maybe he was responsible for turning Lathander back into Aumanator just to weaken the Faerûnian church of the sun and thus make things ripe for a Greyhawkian invasion. :D |
