They laid off one of their best and most competent designers, who was responsible by and large for their best setting in all of 4E (Dark Sun?).

I don't even know what to say.

Edit: But this definitely does quality as "stopped".

I may not have agreed with Rich on all occasions when we posted here about the 4E Realms, but I had nothing but respect for the man himself, and I really enjoyed his writing (having just finished Blades of the Moonsea at long last).

I am grieved indeed to hear this.

The subject heading of this thread is in fairly bad taste. I suggest it be revised.

I too am sorry to see Rich go. I admired the man, respected his work, and was glad to call him friend. There is some comfort in the thought that for many, life begins after Wizards. I hope and expect good things in his future.

I know not everyone agreed with his decisions, and he caught a lot of flak for things in the Realms that people didn't like. But no one can deny that he was a staunch supporter of the Realms, for better or worse, and losing him at WotC is losing a friend of the setting.

Cheers

The title is in reference to when a poster would always end his post with Richard Baker MUST be stopped. Rich and I think Chris Perkins had a sign saying that behind Rich in one of the Youtube vids that came out before the 4E Launch. Just part of the history of these forums...

The 'PATHFINDER BABY!' part of your sig make me doubt it is only jest.

lol Dammit Delta!

I saw the title, and came very close to raging before I saw who made the thread.

I am so angry that he was let go. Seriously. I was actually upset yesterday when I read his blog post.

I don't even know what to think at this point.

I mean, hopefully we'll continue to see quality products of the kind he was want to provide. I know I have faith in ESDB to put out good Realms work, for instance, but I'm sure as hell gonna miss Rich, no matter what.

THEMES! Come on!

How you gonna fire the guy who came up with that? It's one of the best things to come out in 4e since 4e itself! And Dark Sun? Holy crap is that a good Campaign book!

Just an unbelievable decision from watzy here.

It pissed me off also!

I have alot of respect for Rich, he was the only WotC guy that would talk to us Realms fans on these forum back in the day. I have a signed book (Corsair) from him for crying out loud!

Oh, I remember. I have been here for some time.

And Rich not being an official team member doesn't necessarily mean we'll see less of his work. Freelance, Rich! Welcome to the ranks of the WotC sellswords.

Cheers

For some reason, I just imagined a world in which Rich, Scott and Paul Kemp were in charge of the direction of the Realms, going forward, and gave out a manly squee, before getting sad due to the idea's vast unlikelyness...

Rich Baker CAN'T be Stopped!!!

Someone should arrange for a batch of T-Shirts with that line and turn it into a improv crowd. It would be a sight to see at a large gathering like GenCon.

Delta, if you ever put that on a shirt, it must be in blue.

Blue fire!

Someone was talking about making a Richard Baker MUST be stopped shirt, and having Rich sign it at GenCon.

Wow. I cannot believe I missed this.

Well, this is indeed very disappointing. I was quite fond of Rich's work, even when the Spellplague fuss had everyone up in arms; I believe wholeheartedly that Rich put a lot of effort into his contributions, and I will miss him a great deal. Here's hoping everything goes well, Rich!

Can't say I'm that surprised, unfortunately.  The man was worthy of respect, considering all the flak he took with grace, from people blaming him for stuff that wasn't his fault ultimately.  Kinda surprised he lasted this long though.

Was he the one who wrote that awfully executed novel The SuckMage? Also, thanks for the link to his little farewell, was so cute to see everyone sucking up to him. I wonder if they think they'll get an autograph?

Oh and sorry, I meant The SwordMage. Well, you know how easy it is to miss and few keys and mispell a few words here and there. It was a mistake, honest! Wink

I hope that WotC took as much as they could from Rich in terms of how to handle interraction with the fan base--and not just online, but in person at conventions.

Rich was just top notch when it came to that sort of stuff. He spent a great deal of time answering numerous Realms-related questions on these forums and did a great job of handling any snark that was unfairly thrown his way.

Again, here's hoping WotC finds not just one, but rather **several** people like Rich.

Seriously. I would hire him in a second for a job that involved handling the community. In a second.
