Savras did it

Recently whispers in the streets have begun to spin a tale of Mystra's fall. Men in sinister garb sit in taverns asking how it could be that Savras the all seeing failed to forsee Cyric's and Shar's attack on Mystra. They say that maybe it was only with his help that they succeeded.
Savras as a demigod did see the attack and with it his chance to ascend higher than fate had so far decreed. And he saw a chance to gain his revenge on his ancient foe, Azuth. For Savras had seen how innefectual this new Mystra was, and how she was failing in her duties, and that her second, Azuth, was unwilling to do what was necessary.
He sought out and learned the spell Karsus had used so long ago to take Mystara's power. He drew power from raw magic, beyond Mystra's control to cast the spell, timing it to take affect as Cyric and Shar started their attack. Unfortunately, he did not know that Shar had hidden some of what was to come from him, in order to seize the power he drew out of Mystra before Savras could claim it. When Mystara died from Karsus's spell, she had many long centuries of being a god of magic, so she was able to maintain control right up til Karsus took her power for his own. The new Mystra had only a few years of control, which she loss under the weight of the attacks on her and her power. She lashed out blindly both sending out destructive ripples through the weave and trying to draw any aid she could. The flucuations in the weave lashed out in what we now call the spellplague, and blue fire scourged the lands. Her realm was shattered, and Mystra and Savras were blasted into nothingness.
Or so go the tales in the taverns.

Lies!!! :headexplo

Savras was a hero!

If you read his entry, it clearly states that he has had, for some unexplainable reason, trouble seeing past certain events... as if things were being blocked.

Shar has secrets in her portfolio - only she has the power to block the all-seeing.

When he finally discerned Shar's hand in things, he raced to Mystra's side... but it was too late. However, his timely arrival (and intervention) gave Azuth and Velsharoon a chance to escape.

He died a hero, saving other gods, and trying to save Mystra, and he made the ultimate sacrifice doing so.

Savras was my favorite FR god - don't go spreading rumours about such a great being. :P

-To quote Igor: "Well, the tales in the taverns were wrong, now, weren't they?"

-That's some good propaganda by Cyric, though. You know, being the deity of lies and all.

I like this. I'm going to use it as a tavern tale for some people trying to explain what happened. (Even though I loved Savras. :P)

But Savras wasn't evil, and his write-up says he was having problems seeing certain future events.

It's your game, and you can do what you want, but its just not logical from where I'm sitting.

It does make for an interesting rumour, though.

-In the context he provided, these are rumors in a tavern. They don't need to make sense. And, as I added, with Savras gone and dead, who better for Cyric to attempt to shift the blame, bring the Prince of Lies?

As Karsus said, they are just rumors. It doesn't have to be true. Obviously, there are going to be vast portions of the population left mystified as to what happened. This is going to lead to speculation and rumor mongering - everything from the Shades killed her to this is possible.

In that case, lets blame it all on Corellon.

He always wanted to take the Magic portfolio back from Mystra, and he wouldn't mind seeing his main squeeze (Sehanine) get some of her lost power back as well.

He conspired with Shar to take down Mystra, and who better then another god of Magic to rest control of the Weave away from her?

Unfortuneatly the whole thing backfired, with both Corellon and Shar trying to grab Mystra's power, and instead of the returned Arcane energies pouring back into Sehanine (allowing her to exert control over her Selûne personality), it instead enpowered the Selûne persona to dominate the Sehanine one.

He got so mad, he renamed all the High Elves Eladrin. :P

Ha. That is so Corellon. Big plans that go all wrong and backfire. Then just go and blame / take your frustration out on someone else. Typical Elf. When you hear High Elven Magic, look for cover. :P

On the bright side he is PRIME REAL ESTATE for the Githyanki in the astral. Hopefully they can get a fixed mortgage.

-Oh, real estate prices for the Githyanki are plummeting, with so many more petrified bodies appearing in the Astral. They're loving it.

Yeah, but with the Ethereal destroyed in 4e, you got all those low-lives from there moving in, so there goes the neighborhood.

hehe yeah I guess the Astral Plane would be all crowded now - they will have to get up neighborhoods.

I claim a section on on the dead body of Eilistraee!! :P It will make a nice spot for a new temple of Lolth!

And what, pray tell, will be the 'basement' of your temple?

I can just see different social classes depending on the neighborhood arising now, with the bodies of 'higher gods' becoming premo real estate, and the bodies of lesser gods being the ghettoes. :P

Would demi-gods become 'the projects'?

The only part that offends my ultimate rules lawyering/canon guardian instincts:

When Mystara died from Karsus's spell

Karsus' Avatar did not kill the deity that it stole power from. Mystryl sacrificed her/itself to protect the weave and not doom all of creation...

Does not LK know his own spell?!?

-Of course he does. But, he didn't feel like pointing it out. Just like he didn't feel like pointing out that it wasn't Mystara's power that was targeted.

semantics... He cast the spell, she died. That is the point. And Savras would have known what would happen, having access to the knowledge of what happened to Karsus.

-Maybe, maybe not. He was still imprisoned by Azuth, at this point in time. This could have, in theory, impeded his divinations.

Yes, but a quick jaunt over to Oghma's library would have unearthed several histories written about the time in question, and he could just scry into the past to gather whatever knowledge the histories didn't contain.

BLASPHEMER!!!!

Savras and his Many "Eyes of Savras" Have been working diligently to determine the cause of the Great Void in his future of Toril.

Sybil and her fellow Eyes have toiled hard throughout the years to determine it's cause.

I will not stand (Type) Idly by while Savras is blamed for such things..

I am uncarnate and have given up the flesh, your beholder's mind is mine to do with as I choose... I repeat only rumors that I have heard, and speak not to their validity. Think hard, my lady, before challenging those who simply share news of the realms with you.

If this is accurate, then you and your beholder bit off way more than you can chew...
