After losing things his whole life, he didn't even survive the destruction of Dweomerheart like Velsharoon and Azuth did. Furthermore, isn't it likely that he would have taken some precaution in case something did happen, despite the fact that Shar was clouding his foresight? I'm just not sure that I buy Savras just imploding the minute Mystra died and having not a single clue it would happen. Anyone agree with me, or am I just crazy? |
| #2lord_karsusFeb 24, 2009 21:52:48 | -Savras certainly did have a life of being screwed over. It happens to some people, though, I guess. He must've known the risks of the divine and all, though. He was, after all clairvoyant. |
| #3suin_bahhar_02Feb 25, 2009 10:29:17 | ![]() Excellent observation. Savras must have known right before or upon ascenscion that his divine death was coming. Knowing the truth about the future without actual context is a curse sometimes. Very human... |
| #4markustay63Feb 25, 2009 14:33:19 | This is why I spin my own personal version of him out to be more of a 'destined-to-die' hero. It was his destiny to 'pierce the veil' that was blocking him at the last possible moment (when Shar was no longer concentrating on maintaing the Augery Shadow), and dive in front of Shar's killing blast, saving Mystra at the cost of his own life. However, Shar managed to forsee Savras' possible intervention, and worked toward having an unknown variable enter the mix - Cyric. She used the Dark Roll of Years to influence events and cuase Cyrics ascendency. So even though Savras did indeed save Mystra (while Velsharoon kept Azuth busy), Cyric still managed to sneak-up behind her while she was distracted (I'm seeing Mystra temporarily stunned by Savras' destruction) and stab her with a piece of the Karstone - a divine relic containing a piece of her own power and therefore able to penetrate her shields. Not perfect... but WAY better then "he wacked her with a stick" while Shar did the Electric Slide. ;) |
| #5ampithereFeb 25, 2009 19:04:00 | This is why I spin my own personal version of him out to be more of a 'destined-to-die' hero. I certainly like that idea a lot better. |
| #6sfdragonFeb 25, 2009 21:30:46 | This is why I spin my own personal version of him out to be more of a 'destined-to-die' hero. not perfect, true, but far more perfect than the prefect of a being brained with a stick. |
| #7rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 25, 2009 22:09:06 | Anyone agree with me, or am I just crazy? Some people do agree with you. |
| #8bonzaiFeb 26, 2009 14:45:03 | To paraphrase a line from the Children of Dune, "To knowthe future, is to be trapped by it". Savras is going to play a large role in my campaign. He see the coming storm, knows that he is powerless to stop it, and so does what he can to ensure humanities, and magic's survival. So he sets in motion several series of events that should help mankind weather the spell plague, and ensure that magic continues after the destruction of the weave. |
| #9lord_karsusFeb 26, 2009 14:50:41 | -Always in motion, the future is, anyway. |
| #10markustay63Feb 26, 2009 15:12:41 | Well, despite all of Shar's carefully laid plans (many of which were 'carefully laid' retro-actively), things STILL didn't go exactly as she had planned. She expected to get all of Mystra's divine power, which didn' t happen. She got some of it, but Selune got the part she originally lost back, which is NOT what Shar wanted at all. So something obviously did go wrong, and you, as the DM, can 'play with' that angle as much as you want. ;) |
| #11BadCatManFeb 26, 2009 18:13:29 | I think Savras will wake up one morning in the 1370s and realise that the next century, the Spellplague and everything was nothing but a bad cheese-related nightmare. That's how I'd reboot it. :D But MT's idea is pretty cool too. |
| #12StiggerFeb 26, 2009 18:58:05 | LK channelling Yoda... Palpatine would be very displeased. :P |
| #13lord_karsusFeb 26, 2009 19:16:50 | I think Savras will wake up one morning in the 1370s and realise that the next century, the Spellplague and everything was nothing but a bad cheese-related nightmare. -You know, maybe that's why Savras is dead. He saw the future, and decided that being dead was better than existing during the Spellplague era, and the post-Spellplague era. LK channelling Yoda... Palpatine would be very displeased. :P -Eh, they were both failures. |
| #14gray_richardsonFeb 26, 2009 23:35:32 | If you recall, Savras was imprisoned for centuries in an artifact by Mystra's pet Azuth. Oh, sure, he seemed to play nice once released. But with the gift of perfect foresight, he labored subtly in silence to see his terrible revenge perpetrated on his captors. It was Savras you see who arranged things for Mystra to be slain during the Time of Troubles. And it took another quarter century to see Azuth eaten by another upstart god. Sure, Savras did not get to witness the fruits of his labors come to pass. But that's okay. He had seen it with clearest foresight, again and again, long before the Spellplague ever cascaded blue fire across the skies. With every casual suggestion he made. With every subtle prophecy he crafted. Manipulating his priests to make sure everything was positioned just right, Savras could see the pieces come together like a jigsaw falling into place. Most people think that Savras died when the Dweomerheart exploded. But that's just what he wanted everyone to think. He bides his time now, awaiting the rest of his plans to unfold like in his vision. It may take some time, but Savras learned great patience during his years of imprisonment. And Savras has his vision to comfort him. His vision of that last look on Azuth's face as Asmodeus set upon him, the true Asmodeus, deep in the bowels of Nessus, tearing into Azuth with his great serpentine maw. Yes, a gleeful Savras never tires of watching that again and again and again... |
| #15StiggerFeb 27, 2009 0:14:21 | Glad to see you're finally admitting that about ol' Palpy now LK... now if only Rino would follow suit and just own up. :evillaugh As to that bit there Gray, I recall myself and several others positing just such a scenario several months ago... still waiting to see if anything comes of it. |
| #16markustay63Feb 27, 2009 8:47:04 | I prefer to spin him as embattled doomed hero, then an embittered little wretch who was biding his time - there's just too much Cyric in that for me. Besides - he had a third eye! Everyone knows a third Eye makes you wise. :P -You know, maybe that's why Savras is dead. He saw the future, and decided that being dead was better than existing during the Spellplague era, and the post-Spellplague era. Wow... I was going to post the same exact thing. ![]() -Eh, they were both failures. Did you catch the carton movie? Yoda: "Size matters not..." :D |
| #17bonzaiFeb 27, 2009 12:19:32 | Yoda: "Size matters not..." :D Lol, I used to have a girlfriend that would say "Dynamite comes in small packages". And I would always answer, "Yeah, but the bigger the stick, the bigger the bang". lol |
| #18rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 27, 2009 12:55:27 | Glad to see you're finally admitting that about ol' Palpy now LK... now if only Rino would follow suit and just own up. :evillaugh I would if there was something to own up to.:P |
| #19StiggerFeb 27, 2009 14:15:48 | Sure, you sith apologist. :P |
| #20lord_karsusFeb 27, 2009 15:44:58 | Wow... I was going to post the same exact thing. -That happens to me a lot. Did you catch the carton movie? -No, I refuse to subject myself to that crap. I have a love/hate relationship with Star Wars, anyway. Lol, I used to have a girlfriend that would say "Dynamite comes in small packages". And I would always answer, "Yeah, but the bigger the stick, the bigger the bang". lol -Whoa. That's awesome innuendo. |
| #21markustay63Feb 27, 2009 20:26:06 | Just call me 'Warhead'. :D -No, I refuse to subject myself to that crap. I have a love/hate relationship with Star Wars, anyway. Sums-up how I feel about the Realms these days. |
