I am using the lord of the nine in my next campaign, and I'm curious about any known servants he has in Faerun. I have the BOVD, and the fiendish codex II, so I know about his generic servants, I was just hoping that some of you knew something that I didn't. Any info would be appreciated, and thanks ahead of time.

I can give you my Ex's number.

Pretty sure she's on his payroll.

-He'll be here all night, folks. All proceeds go directly to the 'Save-A-Gnome' foundation.

-One worshiper of Asmodeus would be one Davoren Hellsheart.

In a way, willing or not, Gargauth.

For some reson, I can see Sharess fleeing to him (trying to avoid any connection to Shar after Mystra's downfall, and also looking for some new 'back-up' now that her fellow Pharonic Gods are gone).

There's that whole 'temptation through debauchery' angle that would work if those two chose to work together.

Then again, one of Baast's (Sharess's other incarnation) main concern's was keeping an eye on Set and his minions (watching for treachery - cats are good at sneaky skulking). Since Asmodeus is also know as 'The Serpent' (in GH and elsewhere) that may be hard to swallow.

Of course, we could always spin that as the very reason for their sudden alliance - Asmodeus may be trying to get the serpent portfolio away from Set (and Zehir, I suppose).

Not sure it this is one, but GHotR mentions one Sfena, who was part of the Iron Throne and gets nabbed by Gargauth the Outcast. He, or it, plans to trade Sfena to Asmodeus for some priceless treasure.

The only reason why I could see that being a feasible trade, is if this Sfena worked for Asmo.

Sfena is the daughter of Glasya, but doesn't work for her or for Asmodeus, she tries to liberate herself from them and the crystalline form she's in, more info in Cloak and Dagger

can't think of any other servant, they're pretty rare and secretive, his cults

Thank you for the info. I was less then sure, but always knew someone would have the right of it.

It is suspected that Vecna was one of his Servants... but since obtaining godhood* he may have ended that association.

I know that Vecna was GH, but he has been core since becoming a god, and since much of core is leaking into FR anyhow, it wouldn't be a stretch to use him (especially with Velsharoon gone).

For more info, see the very last issue of the real Dragon Magazine. ;)

Edit: Thinking more on this, Vecna achieved Godhood by absorbing power from Iuz, who was a Cambion and son of Graz'zt, and weakened Iuz in the process. It seems entirely possible that Asmodeus would set him on this path, because I can see a Arch-Devil wanting to weaken a Demon Lord's foothold on a world.

Considering Graz'zt has also been heavily involved with the FR Pantheon, I think all of that should be FR canon as well (applied to a greater, 'Planer' picture).

Vecna acheived greater godhood by absorbing Iuz, but he had already been a demigod for centuries (since the faith of his cultists called him back from the oblivion Kas had sent him to). After Iuz escaped, he dropped down to lesser deity status. The Core Beliefs article on him was occasionally unclear about that distinction, referring to his ascent to full deity status as "becoming a god" as if he had been a mortal before then, rather than a demigod.

Vecna was already statted as a demigod in Vecna Lives!, published in 1991, when Greyhawk or the Greyhawk deities were not considered core. He was still a demigod throughout his time in Ravenloft.

The Asmodeus connection would have some negative reprecussions on the game, I think; if the Serpent is, as the Epic Level Handbook, Book of Eldritch Might II, and other sources state, the personification of epic magic, all epic spellcasters would owe a similar debt to the Overlord of the Nine Hells. It seems quite a leap in logic in any case, as the World Serpent has plenty of other aspects; we could as easily claim that Vecna was getting his powers from the World Serpent Inn. The Dragon article you cite suggested it was much more likely that the "Serpent" was merely a delusion springing from Vecna's insanity.

All of this is Forgotten Realms canon in the sense that the Realms shares a multiverse with Greyhawk in 1st and 2nd edition (and, among the cool people, all editions), but it's affected Abeir-Toril little (unless you assume that Vecna's ill-fated attempt at ascension to still greater power in Sigil somehow caused FR's cosmology change, which seems unlikely). If Vecna is going to expand his cult into the Realms, he needs a reason that he decided to invest his resources in Toril rather than any number of countless worlds with few connections to Oerth; some specific secret to great power than only Abeir-Toril possesses. It seems unlikely to me that he would enjoy laboring under Ao's authority (whereas he has no controlling overgod to limit his ambitions on Oerth), so I think he wouldn't bother for anything less than a strong shot at replacing Ao himself. Barring that, he might settle for replacing Shar, and use her status as a greater divinity to boost himself in other, less autocratic spheres.

Wait... so Iuz is no more?

He was, by far, my favorite villain in GH. I had a whole campaign I DM'd about his nation trying to war with the rest of the world.

Edit: never mind... I should read the whole before posting...

MarkusTay is rubbing off on me!

Edit edit: Hmm... He could have found Ravencloak and found the secret of where he comes from. That would tempt him to look. Then, seeing a would ripe for the taking, he seeps into the background and bids his time learning what he can and working to his own end?

After the death of the latest Blackstaff, the real Khelben Arunsun decides to come home and take his grandfather's (uncle's?) place. Mordenkainen (who I suspect is another family member... or perhaps even IS the real khelben) accompanies him (he knows the way well... and wants to see whatever happened to his 'old buddy Elminster').

Vecna, being highly interested in the Circle of Eight and all their doings, scrys them and become interested in this recently-devasted world that is currently lacking in a god of Undeath.

Easy peasy, lemon Squeezy. :D

Besides that, Vecna had canonically 'dealt with' people from FR before, because several Realms (and liches) were from Toril, and although the Darklords were trapped within their Realms, most of the regular people were free to move about Ravenloft as they wished. In fact, he could have even become aquanted with Bane there (Bane had followers - somehow - in Ravenloft). For all we know, Bane could be sponsoring Vecna's church in the Realms, for his own nefarious purposes (some new power-grab, I would imagine).

Or maybe Bane just misses his friend Myrkul's ugly mug. :P

Bane may be sponsoring Vecna because, in due course, he wants to bump Shar off and he needs someone for Ao to give her portfolios to.

After manipulating Cyric to murder Mystra he has become quite good at this sort of stuff.

Well, I personally wouldn't link Vecna's Serpent to Asmodeus, who btw sits on the Serpent's Throne and who's sometimes also referred to as the Serpent, or to Ahriman, as being part of the Twin Serpents, or even to the World Serpent, who is or at least should be completely unrelated to the former guys.

Way too many serpents, if you ask me.

-A common mythological trope/theme.
