-There are a few different rituals.

-The ritual that the Shadovar use to turn residents of the City of Shade in Shades, we don't know. That's never been disclosed to us. It likely never will.

-In the Fane of Shadows, Erevis Cale took Masks' chalice (If my memory serves me right) and had his life force mixed with Shadowstuff. That's how he became a Shade.

-Overall, there isn't any one proper way to do it. Anything that can concievably be thought of can work.

I think it would have to be some sort of pact with 'Shadowy Powers', by one means or another.

Thats the interpretation I get - divine power is involved (which is great, because it becomes entirely the DMs call if it works or not).

-I wouldn't necessarily say that divine intervention and intercession on some level is needed. The Plane of Shadows is a physical place, and it has no "master"- that is, there isn't one person in principle that controls the Plane of Shadows. It's like any other plane. And, there've been people and races to unlock and discover powerful secrets from other planes without the interference of deities. The Plane of Shadows would be the same, I think. It's the mixing of the soul with shadows that is the biggest connection, but using Arcane magic, one can "experiment" with the soul, avoiding deific entanglements.

Dont you need necromancy to create shades also? or are those different kinds of shades?

Like the Chaulssinyri. Some of them, the Shadow-dragon drow, got their powers because they were descendants from shadow dragons and drow. But other inhabitants, like their slaves became dark bears (former quaggoths, now infected with shadow stuff) while they were with the Chaulssinyri in the Plane of Shadow during their exile (there is said in the WE of Dragons of Faerûn: The Shadow City of
Chaul’mur’ssin struggled for many years before the Chaulssinyr established a real foothold on the Plane of Shadow, and in so doing its populace gave up a large measure of its extraplanar Prime nature. (In other words, a significant fraction of the populace acquired the shadowLoM template.)
)

Little question, how became Artemis Entreri shade or the like? I remember that I have read something about him, being still alive in 14whats'o'ever because he transformed into a shade.

That was my impression, too, though only to the extent that this 'Shadowy Power' gave the secret of transforming any creature into a shade to Lord Shadow. And as far as I'm concerned Shar was that power, in return for servitude, of course ;)

He killed that other shade guy (what was his name, Rorli?) with his dagger shortly after they came to the Bloodstone Lands for the first time, as detailed in That Curious Sword, a short story in Realms of Shadow.
And he didn't really become a shade, just absorbed some of the guy's life essence, hence Entreri's slightly darker skin and, apparently, longevity.

A shadow weave node would work. :P

IIRC Erevis became a Shade after cleaving that orb thingy with Weaveshear during the ritual that Cryicist;) was doing in that book. :D

-We don't know what exactly he transformed into, or how that has really affected him. It happened when he absorbed a Shade's soul (which would be 'tainted' with Shadowstuff in the first place). It made his skin darker, and made him feel more youthful, but we still don't know the full effects of it all. Maybe that's all that it did. Maybe it will extend his lifespan by a little. Maybe by a lot. Odds are, in some future R.A. Salvatore novel, we'll find out.

There is now that RAS created one, but as far as stats - you're highly unlikely to see any, because as long as it remains 'undefined', RAS can conceivably do whatever he wants with the character.

Artemis is now involved in an 'arms race' with Everis Cale, it appears, in regards to 'uber kewlness'.

-It seems like, honestly, Salvatore has done more harm in doing this to Entreri, than good. People used to gush at how cool he is. Now, people seem slightly bitter.

Well, Cale was sort-of an Artemis knock-off (Artemis had that sword first, remember? It did what Cale's body does).

Now that RAS copied Cale's 'Shade Mojo', HE looks like the knock-off (thus, RAS did Kemp a favor, and himself a disservice).

Anyhow, I always liked Entreri, but because he was Drizzt's arch-nemesis, he could never be as cool as he might have been (because he always had to come up short against the protagonist).

Cale, being the 'good guy', didn't have that problem, so he had a leg-up on Entreri, and now RAS is playing catch-up with his second-string, which is not good, considering Drizzt is losing traction after he jumped the shark in Thousand Orcs.

Anyway, its about time FR got some new blood and a new anti-hero - things were getting stale... and Paul is a helluva writer and worthy inheritor of the Salvatore crown.

Wait--I'm pretty sure Artemis absorbing the shadowstuff predated Cale becoming a shade.

Maybe.

I thought they both happened around the same time.

However, even before Cale actually became a Shade, he had that 'shadowy stuff' going on around him, because of his association with Mask.

I figured Paul like Entreri's sword, and took it to the next level, but whatever; I like Cale better because he is less two-dimensional then Entreri (which RAS tried to fix, and only managed to ruin the ending to Artemis' trilogy instead, by cutting things short).

Besides, that short-story wherin AE gets his 'Shade-stuff' was so self-serving and transparent - it was obviously fabricated just so RAS could port his beloved villain into 4th edition.

-Entreri predated Cale in becoming 'Shadowy'. Entreri became 'Shadowy' in "That Curious Sword", which was a short story in Realms of Shadows, which was published sometime like 2001-2002, with it being an anthology for the Return of the Archwizards trilogy. Erevis Cale became 'Shadowy' in Twilight Falling/Dawn of Night, which came out in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

-4e wasn't a spellmote in Bruce Cordell's tentacles, at this point (2001). Salvatore wrote it, presumably, to prevent Entreri from feeling the ravages of being old, as he had continually "littered" his more recent books (at the time) with.

Whatever,

I only found-out about Artemis Entreri's 'shadey side' about two years ago, so in my world, they happened around the same time. :P

So what you are saying is that Kemp took RAS's idea, and did it better.

Not hard to do, really... I think I can come up with a character concept that doesn't need to wear black, be introspective and moody, and carry two weapons.

I mean, c'mon... it the only damn formula that guy knows.

Am I the only suspecting that Artemis' "shade" transformation was done so he wouldn't need to die during the 100-year jump??

Seems a bit like they wanted a clean slate with the jump ... but all the humans, people still liked from novels needed to move forward too ... so they suddenly all became wizards or shades or something, to they could survive (and keep selling books)

-No! No! No! Did you even read my bad joke!? If you had, then you'd know that the chronology does not match! I'll repeat myself:

I found something that could help :

Shadow You Become(Shadovar)
Transmutation
Spellcraft DC: 131
Components: V, S, F, M, Ritual
Casting Time: 20 days, 10 hours, 11 mins
Range: Touch
Target: One willing creature touched
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No (automatic fail)
To Develop: 1179000 gp, 24 days, 47160 xp; Seeds: Transform (DC 21), Armor (DC 14), Fortify (Con)(DC 23), Fortify (Cha)(DC 23), Fortify (ST x 3)(DC 69); Factors: add template (ad – hoc DC + 50), change range to touch(DC + 4), change type (native outsider)(DC + 5), increase Con bonus (DC + 6), increase Cha Bonus (DC + 6), increase ST bonus (DC + 54), add all Ex abilities (Fast Healing, SR, Skill bonuses, Speed)(DC + 40), add all Sp abilities (DC + 60), add AB (+ 2)(ad – hoc DC + 30), increase life span (ad – hoc DC + 70), make instantaneous *(DC x 2); Mitigating Factors: increase casting time (10 min)(DC – 20), increase casting time *(10 hours)(DC – 20), increase casting time (20 days)(DC – 40), ritual(3 slots 7th lvl)(DC – 39), lose all bonus when not in darkness(ad – hoc DC – 20), expensive material component *(297000 gp)(DC – 118), arcane focus (Shade Mythallar)(DC x 1/5);

It’s not known how Lord Telamont Tanthul, High Prince Of Shade Enclave, was a able to create this ritual. Some speculate that he made a pact with a powerful dweller of the Plane Of Shadow, others assure that Shar herself whispered the knowledge directly in his ear.
This communal ritual must be performed by the High Prince with aid of Prince XXXXXXXXX, high cleric of Shar. Other princes or wizard apprentices can participate to contribute with their magic. The ritual draws power directly from the Shadow Weave using the power of the Shadow Mythallar of the Shade Enclave; the spell also requires a very expensive material component, a shadow blanket.
The ritual must be performed on a willing creature otherwise fails: it allows the receiver to inherently acquire the Shade template; the receiver retains all his previously characteristics plus his newly acquired ones.

Arcane Material Components: One Shadow Blanket
Arcane Focus: Shade Enclave Mythallar
