In "Shadowdale, scouring of the land" adventure, it states that Elminster was gravely injured and was "Wisked" away? what happened to him, and where did he go?
I haven't read "Auauroch: empire of the shade" yet, does it explain what happened to him in that book?

-I don't remember where he was shunted off to, but the basic reason for this was to make Elminster unavailable and preoccupied, allowing the Zhents to do what they did, and the PCs to do what they do unassisted.

Can you do that? Shouldn't the PC's rely on him for everything?

Right, apparently the rules required the DM to use him or that drow ranger dude in every Realms adventure

Thought so. 4e is just going to suck with no powerful backup at hand.

Khelben was required if either of those two was unavailable, but he died, so they got spread too thin and Elminster got pneumonia, and had to be nursed back to health by Mystra, which is why she didn't act directly on her own behalf. Drizzt, of course was too busy writing in his diary to realize truly important events were occuring.

I know I personally get my group together solely to watch me play the daring duo. I like to start all sessions with the PC's standing by a hot tub, taking turns scrubbing the pairs backs while they discuss how hard it is being everywhere stealing the thunder from the PC's. Then they like to point out how it makes it all worth it just knowing that at the end of the day they overshadow everyone, and there is nothing any other DM can do about it.

Then I like the PC's to carry their towels and water, as they deal with things solely of the PC's level all session, never worrying about the greater trials of the world, before retiring to point deridingly at the group before getting wasted, and hitting clubs.

Personally I feel like I have failed as a DM if I let my PC's roll a single die, or have to RP more than asking how Elminster likes his tea, or bringing Massa Drizzt his loofa.

People play this game? See I was under the impression that until the inception of 4e, it was physically impossible to play in the Forgotten Realms, anywhere. Last time I checked, every last square inch of the Realms was covered in NPC's no less than 30 levels higher than the PC's, and they were all following the PC's around, killing all the bad guys, seconds before the PC's could react.

You know what's funny about this thread? I remember when this adventure came out, and half the people posting here in a sarcastic manor were enraged at what happened. After all, the Zhent was only level 15 or so, and I specifically remember one person commenting on the Zhents intelligence score, "It is too low!" She said. "There was no way she could outsmart Elminster!"

So, yeah, it's funny how things go. ;)

Overactor. After a session or two, your PCs should know Elm wants his tea boiling hot, with mint, and a young lass on the side.

Blowing Elm up did fit the story as they were going to shut down the weave etc, but it was a bit odd that - if I understood it right - the cause of the explosion were the mucho-powerful cursed items in his closet.

He wasn't before?

I always envisioned Elminster as being like the slightly deranged uncle at the family Christmas party. You know, the one that tells great stories and once got in trouble for exposing himself to a woman in the park – only, with magic.

-There's in-game explanations for things happening in the setting, and metagame (out-of-game) explanations for things happening in the setting.

-That's more or less Elminster. He'd probably tell the same story, too.

Well, you are either being sarcastic or thinkin' I am.

I hope neither, so that the truth be told.

Yeah, that's how I envisioned Elminster as well. :P

But on top of that, all his so-called great stories, while holding a kernel of truth often find themselves greatly embellished upon or slightly altered for one reason or another. This means you could pretty much never take anything he says at face value. ;)
