With all this talk of shadowy Shades and shady Shadar-Kai. I'm curious, what races are native to the Plane of Shadow. The Shades immigrated from Netheril, the Shadar-Kai are fey touched by shadow stuff. I'm slowly shifting through the Monster Manuals, but it's slow going. The Manual of the Planes' biggest help is shadowy animals and shadow variety material plane monsters.

As per Worlds and Monsters, a large amount of the sentient population of the Shadowfell was described as Undead of all types. The Shadowfell doesn't need as much fauna as other places if a large amount of what you run into there is undead.

Those are more or less what I've come across.

I'll have to come up with something.

-Basically, you can apply the Shadow Creature Template to anything you want, and have a bunch of those things native to the Plane. Handy thing, that.

Shadow creatures rock... nothing says 'having a bad day' like being stocked by a shadow panther while taking a darkside road trip.

The Dark Creature template given in the Tome of Magic should work fine and is specifically made for creatures living on the Plane of Shadows. Undead ... weren't they predominant on the Negative Energy Plane - if there still is such a thing in 3E/4E?

Furthermore, the shadow dragons and various templates relating to them would also fit the bill. The web-enhancement on Chaulssin, written for Dragons of Faerûn features two templates for those.

:D The plane of Shadows killed the negative energy plane and took it´stuff.
Undead aren´t powered by negative energy anymore, IIRC they said that a living body has souls, animus and something else. Well once the soul is gone you manipulate whats left and create an undead.

...various templates...

As for templates, I could give you the Shadow-walker template from Unapproachable East, though it's more related to Mask than directly to the Plane of Shadow.

-Undead creatures live in the Plane of Shadows, yes, but they are indeed more prominent in the Negative Energy Plane, where they received the source of their energy. They are it's only inhabitants, asides for the Xeg-Yi.

-The Negative Energy Plane was folded into the Plane of Shadows by Shar to create the Shadowfell.

Well, 4E Shadar-Kai descended from humans, not fey.

They suddenly got a bit less interesting in 4E. If I wanted human/shadow hybrids, I would go with the Shades.

I believe there is an Umbral Creature template as well, though 3.5e might have updated/merged it with the Shadow template.

Maulagrym weren't native to Shadow, they descended and developed from a human who migrated there. IIRC.

Fair enough, although in other settings (like the generic "core setting"), there might not be any Shades.

That's correct--they are descendants of Malaug.

Yes, but they were descended from a native of a material world, and due to mating restrictions (IIRC) they have to bring mates from the material world as well. They are native to the Shadow plane in the same way I am native to America, my family (at least parts) has been here since before there was a USA, but I am still not a Native American.
