It occurred to me just a moment ago that, with 4e coming in and WotC trying to take things to a new level, that smokepowder may suddenly get a more prominent presence after a hundred years of civilization advancement.

Personally, I hated this stuff being introduced into FR--which I always saw as a "swords and sorcery" kind of place.

Just curious what people think will happen with it and if they would be welcoming to having more of it around....

The same thought occured to me. A couple of possibilities: 1)the spellplague has rendered smokepowder inert, 2) Lantan has sunk or disappeared in the chaos of the spellplague, smokepowder and guns must be rediscovered, 3) with a hundred years in time and technological innovation, Lantan has become a great seafaring nation with colonies in Chult, around the Shining Sea, and in southeast Faerun.

With gnomes generally disappearing, I can't see option three so much. Yet, nothing can be said yet of Lantan, so who knows?

Praise Bejebuz!!

Man, I wish I could read the Ask the Authors thread. But, 200 pages, in which 99% belongs to posters and not the authors, just makes it difficult.

Thanks for the info. ;)

But I LIKED the smokepowder guns! My AD&D Paladin always had a Starwheel pistol handy. Though I gotta admit, I cheated with it once. It does extra damage when you do max damage, and the Starwheel does 1d4, so it's easy enough to roll the die so it keeps coming up four. Did insane damage with it one time by rolling it in such a way that a 4 kept coming up. Never did that again, though, as I was getting dirty looks from the DM which made me feel guilty. :embarrass

That was my second issue with it--too easy to destroy the enemy.

Mounted on Frickin' sharks! :D

I'm hoping for a decent Blaster myself, or at least a type II Phaser.

Personally, I think Forgotten Realms: The Steam Age would have been way better then the Drek we're getting.

It would be appropriate - the setting is already looking like a trainwreck. :P

Its only cheating if you get caught.

Up until that point, it's referred to as 'Creative Gaming'. :D

Pathfinder did away with the D4 BTW, just for the reasons you describe. With all the so-called 'garbage' WotC got rid of with 4e, they thought the D4 legacy was important enough to keep?

In all my years of gaming, I don't think I've ever actually seen one roll - they slide, and occasionally bounce, but never roll.

not big on guns, never was convinced on their accuracy worth.never figured they were cost effective either.

cost of smoke powder
cost of weapon
cost of ammo
cost of possible enchantments

and people whining about puting them in crpgs saying that if they are implemented the game will appeal to everybody and other things.

Wellll... there was that Dracolaser....

Personally, the way the gun rules are written, they aren't all that great to have, so if a player wants to obtain one just as a 'flavor thing' I'd let him find one (since they do exist in FR canon). So far, though, my players like them way less then I do, so they haven't made an appearance.

I'm still hoping we get a Drow Subway-system in 4e. :P

-But lasers will!

Correction, spell amplified magic missiles (doing 10* the damage).. as per that ship from Great Space :D
As in fact, heard a timetraveller who proceeded to infiltrate house Durothil since when Uvaeren stood young.. has had plenty of offspring.. some of which as per the great great.. great grandfathers instructions installed such cannons on the manowars and armadas in the Elven Imperial Navy of Realmspace.
Neither are any of those ships powered by helms anymore.. when a mythal works so much better. Providing the minor details of life like water, food, scrying, gates ..ship pruning.. more flitters.. and various defensive and offensive functions. Just as a little bonus. Helps when orcs and their kin just cannot physically enter the ship, and if anyone but a elf tries to teleport in, struck by 20d10 and teleported somewhere very far away. :P (damn that would invalidate a ton of adventures if implemented.. lol )
The radiance of radiant ships has been fully included into elven ships, with the ability to even spell out words on the wings.

Im even told a major function of those mythals is the ability to airy water in such a fashion you can stay perfectly dry immersed in water.. breating and swim at the same time. So quite a lot of those ships are waiting at the bottom of the oceans, with full crews all in millennia long reverie..

Oh yeah, a variety of the arcane armor is standard equpment, along with gemswords for officers. Everyone has helmets with magical visors too..

...ohwell.. atleast its a fancy dream of sorts ;)
It would take closer to 3 years of gaming to see that thru.. lol

He specifically said, though, that Warforged won't be part of FR. That's only IF you wanted to implement them personally.

Sub-par? Hadn't heard that one myself. Not that I actually looked for opinions on them...

On the whole, I don't think there's much revolutionary or particularly evocative in either of them, but there's a lot of stuff in there that's fairly useful for city and dungeon-building, if only as a source of ideas. Definitely DM oriented books though, not so great for a player I wouldn't think. Convenient sources sums them up best as far as I'm concerned.

I'd love to see those Gnome robots myself... something to incorporate into my campaign I think :evillaugh

There are a few layouts and maps, don't ever use those myself though. More like convenient 'tools' for quick determinations of what's in a given city. Fast, easy, templates for city districts and dungeon ecology to be applied and modified as I need them to be is the more useful content for me.

City one is pretty good, though I'd suggest looking it over at the book store first to see if its really to your taste. If you're buying it online... well, its convenient, but not exceptional, so if you've money to spare, I don't see why not. In the case of a limited budget, there's better things to spend your money on.

As to the Dungeon one, it does have a PrC ala Dungeon Keeper that would be ideal for someone like Halaster which is kinda fun... though the internal arrangement of both is a bit... haphazard. Not the best organized books WotC ever put out to say the least, and both probably could be called sub-par in terms of that, even if the quality of the work is decent.

I've been sort of doing that myself, but I took a look at most of the ones I don't have this weekend, and still don't really care much for them. Weapons of Legacy looked sort of promising, but something about it just isn't really appealing. Heroes of Horror has some things I like, but I'm not sure I can justify shelling out money for just a couple of things I could do myself. Incarnum... something about that whole souls as magical fuel thing (presuming I understood that correctly) brings to mind some very disturbing concepts for me that I have no real desire to introduce into my view of D&D.

-Weapons of Legacy, I heard, isn't that great. Heroes of Horror, I've never even heard of. Magic of Incarnum, I recently got, but haven't gone over the rules, really, yet. I like very much the concept of "soul" magic and all of that, though. Even if I never fully get the rules (and, skimming it, they seemed a little complicated), I'm using the certain concepts provided.

Heroes of Horror (seems to be adventuring in Ravenloft without actually being in Ravenloft) seemed to go along with Heroes of Battle (warfare based adventuring, not a bad book at all I found)... kinda like strange extensions of the Environment books that didn't quite fit in with that series concepts, but didn't really go anywhere else either.

For me the only good out of heroes of horror is the Arshivist (sorta like a divine wizard ) and the Dread Necromancer (the necromancy answer to the war mage). I use Incarnum fairly often. Is sorta complicated but is cool if you have a stingy DM since you pretty much build your own Magic Iitems...

is like Oriental Adventures's taint. if you are in a "tainted" place for too long your mind and body beging to decay and stuff happens to you (like your eyes drool out of your sockets and get replaced by glowing orbs) also some creatures hit you with taint as well.

Forum Issues Update

-----------------------------------------------------------------------Hello all!
Just a quick note to let you know that we are aware of the ongoing significant issues with our forums and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We have had a hardware failure as well as an issue with our archiving maintenance. This combined with the increase in traffic due to the 4E release has caused our forums to become very unstable. We are working to resolve these issues but do not have an ETA at this time. Please be aware, it will likely be a minimum of 2 weeks before we are completely stable. I will update you when I hear more!
