| #1addi83Jan 05, 2009 23:23:13 | Here's the thing. My GM started a game in the Forgotten Realms, using D&D 4th edition. We start at 20th level, but that's not all. Two of the current characters are old favorites from a Starwars Saga edition game we recently finished, who were spirited to Faerun by an Ancient Gold Wyrm, using some GM hand-wave ritual, and 3 more characters are natives to the Realms. We converted the characters to d&d 4th. Or, stylistically reimagined them, for lack of a better term. We are here to help fight the rise of evil Dragons lead by Tiamat, following the death of Bahamut and the subsequent decline of good dragons. And for the most part, we're going to try to help out. My character has been in active play in the Star Wars setting, in an 'Elseworlds' Knights of the Old Republic game. She started out as a Scoundrel, working as a computer hacker and infiltrator, later becoming a spec-ops agent, growing in strength to become a truly elite soldier, discovering a latent force sensitivity, half-heartedly becoming a Jedi (the circumstances were very special), after saving the galaxy numerous times, first from the Mandalorians, then from the Sith, and finally from an ancient extradimensional evil foolishly brought forth by the Sith, along with her group. She eventually became a Jedi Master, if only for her prestige, her raw force power and combat prowess, and role in rebuilding the order following it's decimation by the Sith, led by Darth Revan. But she was from the start a very dark and violent character, only reining in her worst tendencies because of influence from her friends, and some notable figures she met along the way. (including the force spirit of her dead girlfriend, a holocron built by her father...he was one of the founders of the Jedi order, there was timetravel involved, don't get me started) At one point, Revan offered her the chance to join him in ruling the galaxy, and to take over once he died...and she accepted..... But her friends in the Rebellion persuaded her that he was playing her for a fool, and that she'd just fall to the dark side with him, so she went back and betrayed Revan and cut off his head in the middle of a conversation while he was receiving medial treatment. She eventually left the order, created a business empire, and manipulated the politics of the galaxy to create a power vacuum (covertly causing the current benevolent Chancellor of the Republic, her old (and some say only) friend to be voted out of office by a vote of no confidence...totally without him having a clue of who was behind it), and having positioned herself to be the only one suitable to fill the power vacuum. But before that could happen, she was whisked away by the Dragons ritual. Now, she's found out that in the Realms, it's possible to do all kinds of things with magic. (she's statted out as a Rogue with a heavy wizard multiclass, to represent her combat style and an analogy for her force powers), even raise the dead...but only if you have a patron God. (I'm not totally sure if that's correct, according to FR canon, but that's how the GM is having it, and I'm ok with that). So she's going to go shopping around for the right church for her, preferably one she can join in good faith, since she's heard that the Gods can see through even as good a liar as her, and thus she won't reap the benefits if she picks one to give lip service to. She's a manipulative b*tch, and I've given her the Evil label in the new system. But she's not totally without a heart, she's willing to betray her only real friend in the political game for her own benefit and power, but she wouldn't want to actually see him get hurt, for example. She has a daughter that she genuinely cares for. (a big plot involving stolen egg cells and IVF...again, don't get me started), and she's got a soft spot for girls that remind her of her dead ex. She may even go out of her way to help strangers (or go along with it when her friends do) if it doesn't pose a huge threat to her, if there's something real to gain by it or if it seems like a fun distraction. (she's not chaotic stupid or stupid evil, it's just that she really only cares about herself and the ones absolutely closest to her, and her only overarching goal is to gain personal power). She's learned the value of appearing heroic, and having a good public image, even if she's ultimately doing it for herself. (Int 23, wis 18, cha 16...with those kind of stats, and all this experience, you're going to be a bit savy) She's an expert liar and disguise artist, has keen senses and a strong presence, and back in the starwars galaxy, she was the best computer hacker ever. (and I do mean EVER), the best lightsaber duelist alive and the best infiltrator I've seen. But despite her great deceptive skills, she tends to be blunt and to the point, unless she thinks she has a good reason to lie...why risk lying when truth will suffice, and you might get caught in it, making it harder to tell that person a lie later. (Trained in Bluff, Intimidate, Insight, Perception, stealth, acrobatics, thievery and arcana (no actual knowledge yet, but can pick up magical auras and stuff), focus in Bluff, Perception and stealth) Given that she can gain some more information, she's going to want to eventually become a God or godling of some sort herself. Back in the SW galaxy, she was the single most formidable person in it. She has a huge hangup about now being in the situation of actually meeting beings that could pull her apart without her standing a chance...HUGE ego, so her primary goal now is to climb this new food chain as fast as she can. We're using D&D 4th edition, but the DM decided not to go with the story changes that go along with it, so the setting is still the 3.5 version. I'm thinking she might go for Mask as a patron God, but possibly Shar or Bane....even Kelemvor, Mystra, Azuth or Oghma are possibilities though. But my memory is rusty, it's been years since I played in the realms, and even longer since I've read the Avatar trilogy or the Trial of Cyric the mad. So I came here for advice. Any thoughts? |
| #2lord_karsusJan 05, 2009 23:30:14 | -If it's a "Jedi", I think Sorcerer, or Psion might be a better fit than Wizard. But, regardless...Keep in mind, a person doesn't have to worship a deity- especially if they come from a place where the individual didn't worship a deity to begin with. |
| #3addi83Jan 05, 2009 23:37:54 | Well, it's still the d&d 4th edition ruleset, and wizard was the best fit we could find of the classes we have access to. (her powers are re-flavored a bit, and descriptively, she knows something is very off about the way she's experiencing the force) And she doesn't HAVE to worship a god. In any event, it would be more like a mutually beneficial partnership in her mind than true WORSHIP. But according to the GM, you need a Patron God to be able to be raised from the dead, so she's definitely looking for at least a safety net, but also looking for the inside track to her own eventual ascension. (a long shot, but it IS going to be an epic level game) |
| #4lord_karsusJan 05, 2009 23:43:08 | -Oh, I misread that. I thought it was 3.5 rules in the 4e setting. |
| #5MirtekJan 06, 2009 10:37:04 | Well, it's still the d&d 4th edition ruleset, and wizard was the best fit we could find of the classes we have access to. Do you have access to the swordmage class? |
| #6addi83Jan 06, 2009 10:45:40 | Do you have access to the swordmage class? Yeah, didn't like it. It represents the quintessential 'Jedi' pretty well...but she was never that. If I were statting out Obi Wan or Mace Windu or someone, I'd probably use that. At first I contemplated Paladin or Fighter, with some multiclassing, then we got the FR book, and immediately we considered the Swordmage...but it didn't fit the type of character I'd been playing. So I decided to analyze what role she'd been playing in Saga. This character was always very offensively oriented, tumbling around the battlefield and doing massive damage, all my combat feats and talents in Saga edition were focused on hitting and doing lots of melee damage, or on having massive out of combat stealthy-type skills. This should obviously be treated with some kind of skill oriented-striker class...and rogue was a great fit. Any thoughts on the Gods question though? |
| #7quale1Jan 06, 2009 11:21:41 | Deep Duerra, Gargauth, Tempus, Memnor ... |
| #8lord_karsusJan 06, 2009 12:03:17 | -Eldath. |
| #9tempest_of_the_7_stormsJan 07, 2009 5:35:03 | If you like playing her as an avenger, who is into poetic justice .. then why not try Hoar?? ... I like that deity. |
| #10addi83Jan 07, 2009 21:03:31 | Cool, I'm not totally sure about any of those...my first choice is still Mask, or perhaps Shar or Bane. But thanks for the input guys. |
| #11drizztsmanchildJan 08, 2009 1:27:39 | A Jedi on Toril? Merde there goes the planet. Next thing you know Darth Sidious will be battling elminster while the Enterprise will enter orbit and teleport wolverine down to battle Drizzt. Geez see what you started? Kidding cool concept.hope it works out. |

Next thing you know Darth Sidious will be battling elminster while the Enterprise will enter orbit and teleport wolverine down to battle Drizzt. Geez see what you started? Thanks, I've always been of the belief that it's possible to play a character that's a bit evil, in an otherwise good group, so long as the players are mature, the character isn't over-the top evil or unreasonable, and so forth. The idea really came about when my DM was complaining that he liked the characters, and felt that they'd been retired before their time, and since we were just getting into 4th edition at that time, he had the idea of importing two favorites into a d&d game. Same characters, new system, new world. Gives us the chance to play with them a bit more, and try out a high level game in the new d&d edition. Now all I need to do is convince the DM to let my friend join with his recently retired superman-clone character from a Mutants and Masterminds game that just ended.....kidding, kidding! |
| #13addle-cove-anarchistJan 08, 2009 3:18:36 | I would also recommend Gargauth due to the all megalomania, or Bane |
