| #1Kurama_YoukoJun 06, 2008 14:02:05 | I was first introduced to D&D through the Realms in 3.0, and while I make no claim to have read everything since then or prior I still do recall of being told of the great tales of certain NPC's and thus with the changing of the realms I am curious as to who's been left standing? Elminster? What has become of the great sage? I heard mention that Kelben Blackstaff is dead, how and why? What of Halaster? What of Szass Tam? What of all the powerful mages, what of Lady Alustriel Silverhand? What of the Simbul? With what I hear of Mystra dying, magic being gone for a time or working differently. I wondered if anything happened to these famous mages. |
| #2JudgeDookieJun 06, 2008 14:15:37 | Dead! Dead! Dead! Why, Bejebuz, why!!! ![]() Oh, El is still around and insane. Szass is still around and insane with power. Blackstaff sacrificed himself for the greater "good." The rest of the chosen are trapped in El's head, besides the Simbul, who we cannot find. |
| #3rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 06, 2008 14:22:44 | I'm short on time, so I'll go through this quickly. Bear in mind that much is still unknown at this point, as the FRCG isn't out yet.Elminster? What has become of the great sage? Alive, but has voices in his head. I heard mention that Kelben Blackstaff is dead, how and why? You'll find the answers by reading the Blackstaff novel, or doing a search about it. What of Halaster? Dead as per the prologue of the recent, generic Undermountain adventure. What of Szass Tam? Still around and in charge of Thay. What of all the powerful mages, Uh, that's a lot to cover.;) what of Lady Alustriel Silverhand? Unknown at this point. What of the Simbul? Missing but not necessarily dead. With what I hear of Mystra dying, magic being gone for a time or working differently. I wondered if anything happened to these famous mages. Well, even with the passage of 100 years or so, something is bound to happen to most of them. Once again, though, the details are still pretty sparse. Khelben's death is detailed because it occured in a novel. |
| #4Kurama_YoukoJun 06, 2008 18:11:45 | Okay, thanks for all you're answers. So its been 100 years since the last major event? |
| #5JudgeDookieJun 06, 2008 21:00:05 | Okay, thanks for all you're answers. So its been 100 years since the last major event? Sweet, Bejebuz. You really are out of the loop. Novels are still being written and finished up for the current Realms. There's a few more yet to come out. After that, it's all over. We graciously jump to the year 1479 and begin 4e. Poke around a bit and you'll get the picture. |
| #6magister_kalJun 06, 2008 21:19:49 | Last I saw they were being stalked by some fellows from WotC with some piano wire in their hands. |
| #7JudgeDookieJun 06, 2008 21:29:11 | Last I saw they were being stalked by some fellows from WotC with some piano wire in their hands. Dental floss. Dental floss, you goonie!!!! ![]() How do you expect us to sue them later for negligence when you keep up the facts!! I knew I should have hired some real talent for this job. ![]() |
| #8rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 07, 2008 19:37:06 | Okay, thanks for all you're answers. So its been 100 years since the last major event? The setting is being moved forward about one century for 4E, and heavy changes are taking place for various reasons (for example, to make the setting jive with 4E rules). |
| #9merrikcaleJun 07, 2008 21:14:40 | The setting is being moved forward about one century for 4E, and heavy changes are taking place for various reasons (for example, to make the setting jive with 4E rules). That plus turning it into a World of Warcraft wannabe is the other major one. As is, making easier for the authors to right about. Some of the kept screwing up the lore they probably got sick of hearing about it |
| #10rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 07, 2008 23:05:14 | Oh there've been numerous stated reasons for the changes, that's for sure: --Make the Realms work with the 4E rules and design principles. --Make the setting easier for authors to write in without having to worry about "tripping" over obsure lore and taken to task for it. --Make the setting less overwhelming for people who are trying to get into it (supposedly, the amount of lore was intimidating for some people). --Cut down on the number of very powerful characters, because some people claim that their PCs were being overshadowed by them. And those are just the reasons I can immediately think of. |
| #11merrikcaleJun 07, 2008 23:10:09 | Oh there've been numerous stated reasons for the changes, that's for sure: They could have done that without the level of upheaval --Make the setting easier for authors to write in without having to worry about "tripping" over obsure lore and taken to task for it. ah. laziness...we may have a winner here --Make the setting less overwhelming for people who are trying to get into it (supposedly, the amount of lore was intimidating for some people). I thought that was the reason they put out Eberron? Yet, Eberron doesn't sell as well as FR. hmmmmmm..... --Cut down on the number of very powerful characters, because some people claim that their PCs were being overshadowed by them. Easily the dumbest reason they came up with. So you're telling me that DMs had to put the novel NPCs in their game or they couldn't come up with an idea that didn't necessitate Elminster and the Seven Sisters coming to the rescue |
| #12lord_karsusJun 07, 2008 23:57:25 | Elminster? What has become of the great sage? -Elminster remains, but he is weary of using magic (effectivley eliminating the levels of Wizard that he has), because doing so would release a single, or multiple entities that are apparently existing trapped in his body. I heard mention that Kelben Blackstaff is dead, how and why? -Khelben Blackstaff, at birth, was appointed a great destiny by Mystra. In fact, his actual name, Akhelben, means, in Elven, 'He who honor, duty and magic define". Anyway, in 1374, things culminated in Khelben sacrificing himself to fufill his destiny. What of Halaster? -Halaster was killed and his soul shattered into thousands of fragments when doing research into how to prevent a future calamity (ie, the Spellplague). What of Szass Tam? -He remains, and is the sole dictator of Thay and the sole leader of the Red Wizards. what of Lady Alustriel Silverhand? What of the Simbul? -We don't know yet. With what I hear of Mystra dying, magic being gone for a time or working differently. -Yes, magic will be working differently, conforming to how it is presented in the 4e ruleset. |
| #13Kurama_YoukoJun 08, 2008 1:17:05 | Thanks again to you all. I've recently played a short 4e module and had a pretty good time (I had to sit and watch for awhile, then someone left and I got to take over their PC.) so I'm really looking forward to what the 4e realms will offer and how it plays. |
| #14sfdragonJun 08, 2008 1:49:17 | whats her name that drow girl was gutted too, Q. Veladorn.... most horribly delt with too. drizzt is still around, |
| #15JudgeDookieJun 08, 2008 7:48:56 | -Elminster remains, but he is weary of using magic (effectivley eliminating the levels of Wizard that he has), because doing so would release a single, or multiple entities that are apparently existing trapped in his body. I know this was a simple misspelling, Karsus, but so there is no confusion... El is wary of using magic, due to the entities he now contains in his head. He would use magic readily and freely if he could. |
| #16merrikcaleJun 08, 2008 11:06:45 | I know this was a simple misspelling, Karsus, but so there is no confusion... where did you obtain the info on El? |
| #17JudgeDookieJun 08, 2008 13:34:07 | where did you obtain the info on El? Through an overruling of the court. It's mine. And I'm stickin' to it. ![]() |
| #18merrikcaleJun 08, 2008 13:38:06 | Through an overruling of the court. It's mine. And I'm stickin' to it. Ok then. ![]() Anyone else? |
| #19lord_karsusJun 08, 2008 14:14:59 | whats her name that drow girl was gutted too, Q. Veladorn.... most horribly delt with too. -Qilue, with the accend over the 'e'. I know this was a simple misspelling, Karsus, but so there is no confusion... -Yes, wary. That one. |
| #20lord_karsusJun 08, 2008 14:16:40 | Ok then. -It was either from one of the Countdown to the Realms articles, or from a review that someone gave about the 4e FRCG, in which they noted that this was the situation Elminster is in. It's 'good' info, if that's what you are worrying. |
| #21JudgeDookieJun 08, 2008 14:32:26 | Ok then. Actually, the question is what entities are in his head. My reply was based on my own concept of who and what is involved. -It was either from one of the Countdown to the Realms articles, or from a review that someone gave about the 4e FRCG, in which they noted that this was the situation Elminster is in. It's 'good' info, if that's what you are worrying. Karsus is correct. |
| #22sfdragonJun 08, 2008 15:30:53 | thanks Karsus, I can never remember how to spell her name let alone pronounce it. |
| #23lord_karsusJun 08, 2008 15:37:13 | -No problem. I pronounce it "Clue-ay". |
| #24rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 08, 2008 16:40:19 | whats her name that drow girl was gutted too, Q. Veladorn.... most horribly delt with too. Yes, Qilue is "Dead! Forever dead!" And Eilistraee is "no longer needed." See the Lady Penitent trilogy. |
| #25merrikcaleJun 08, 2008 20:56:30 | -It was either from one of the Countdown to the Realms articles, or from a review that someone gave about the 4e FRCG, in which they noted that this was the situation Elminster is in. It's 'good' info, if that's what you are worrying. merci beau coup |
| #26lord_karsusJun 09, 2008 10:31:10 | -Um...Wee wee. ![]() |
| #27merrikcaleJun 12, 2008 17:11:16 | Yes, Qilue is "Dead! Forever dead!" They still have Corellon |
| #28lord_karsusJun 12, 2008 17:26:54 | -Who theoretically can have evil Clerics now...![]() |
| #29merrikcaleJun 13, 2008 10:05:42 | -Who theoretically can have evil Clerics now... don't start. |
