So who here is going to use the "new" Realms?

As a soon to be DM, I will probably be using the new Realms to get my group situated with the newest setting, where the lore of the books doesn't mean squat in present. But, who here will be using the New realms in their games, and who here will either:

a) Finish their campaign in the old first

or

b) Stay in the old Realms

Depends on the quality of the new Realms versus the old. It would be rather closeminded to say it won't be any good sight unseen (although I think its probably safe to say it won't be the same setting really), but also rather overly enthusiastic to say it'll be great without having at least looked at it.

Regardless of that, I'll definitely finish my current campaign first, which could take a while (1year + at a minimum) given my groups track record, which is set in the early 1300's DR, although we'll probably convert over to 4e if the rules turn out to be as streamlined as they seem to be.

Well I'm playing a campaign right now, but the DM's life schedule has changed so it might be dead in the the water. I'm usually the DM for our group and I find the new realms to be fascinating. I plan on running a campaign set in the new realms as soon as I can get all of us together. I hope the DDI Game Table will be ready to use when the FR Player's Guide is released in September, but that may not be the case.

4E Realms, nah, changed parts that I don't like long time ago, now it's perfect

4E ''core'' lore that will have to find its place in FR is pure trash, so

4E mechanics, I'll steal couple of ideas that I like, and continue developing much better homebrew system

Well apparently the majority of folks so far here don't like 4E so why go to the new FR. I do wonder if the vocal folks on these boards represent the D&D community as a whole. I some how really don't think so. But I could be wrong!

I for one am planning on making the move... I also am one of those that gave up on the realms when the canon material got so deep that no one with a real life could keep up... And I am just sick and tired of Drizzt Do'Urden! Just my opinion.

Hate to tell ya this, then, but Drizzt is still alive and well (well, as well as he could be) in the new realms. He was in his 70s (very young for a dark elf) in 3.x Edition realms and the prologue and epilogue of the newest book ("The Orc King"? I don't read the Drizzt books anymore, so I'm not sure of the names) indicates that he survived the Spellplague.

From what I saw of the prereleased stuff, I would think you could easily incorporate a lot of the new rules into the old in some way. Then again, I am only mildly familiar with both 3e and 4e, so I am no authority.

-What do you mean? Using the 4e rules, but sticking to 3e lore? Sure, you can do that. 4e, ultimatley, is just a ruleset. You can use 1e rules, and 3e lore, 3e rules, and 2e lore, 2e lore and GURPS (whatever that is, I only know it in passing) rules, and so on and so forth

You have to rethink your thinking. You don't adapt 3e rules to 4e, you adapt 4e for 3e. Trying to bring all the prior to the latter would be a nightmare. Picking and choosing bits of the latter to bring to the former will be much easier.

-If you are "translating" stats from any ruleset to another, of course you are going to have to "rewrite" stats. Is it impossible? To "translate" things exactly? Maybe, going by all of the rules. Is it hard? Possibly. Can it be done? Sure. I can't tell you how many 2e Elven spells I've "translated" while working on Elves of Faerûn. Same thing with Elven items.

I'm certainly going to be playing in it. I might even DM a Realms game for the first time in a very long time, though it's likely I'll be busy with my homebrew game for a while, since there's some conversion needed. Still, as someone who thinks of D&D as a sandbox game, and wants worlds to be the same way, I like the promise of "three books, and you're on your own".

I have to admit, the 'three books, and you're on your own' notion has me intrigued... still don't like the lore changes though, as much of what was deleted were some of my favorite parts. No idea why they couldn't be imported in with a little imagination and creativity though. Presumably, there's going to be something in the DMG that gives us some ideas on how to build a pantheon for homebrews, so I fail to see the problem.

You didn't lose anything under the old system; you could have limited your purchases and ignored additional material. The new system dosn't give you anything you didn't have before, while it takes something away from those who enjoyed keeping up with the developments of a "living world". On that note, I wonder how many new novels they are expecting to sell, now?

-I didn't say that some of those changes aren't bad. It's just that, things like that, I can deal with rather easily. It's much easier to ignore the progress in one particular region/city than it is to ignore the progress of the entire setting, which includes people/places/the metaplot, etc.

On that note, I wonder how many new novels they are expecting to sell, now?

I was wondering what percentage of readers consisted of fans of realmslore, who would read otherwise average-quality books (there are notable exceptions, but without the FR setting most of these books were not worth reading given the opportunity costs involved) simply to keep up with what was going on and for insight into the cultures of various locales. These type of fans would buy literally dozens of these books over the years. I was also wondering whether any other such fans would feel little incentive to invest in a new series of Realms novels when they dislike the new setting?

There was a period of time where I just stopped following the Realms and didn't read any books in 3rd Edition. Consqeuently, I was behind on the lore. I figure now is a good time to start reading it all again for my upcomming 4th Edition campaigns.

I think this probably puts me in the minority in that since I don't know all that much about the current realms, the 100 year jump will help me reestablish a feeling for setting. That's probably the biggest reason why I like the time jump. The past is now the past and I can play catch up far more easily

The one thing I am worried about is the state of Mulhorand. I don't mind it being reduced in power or taken over by worshpers of Set or whatever else as long as it's not replaced by a huge chunk of Abeir like Unther was, lol. I like desert settings and Mulhorand was my favorite of those in the realms.

So who here is going to use the "new" Realms?

I will, but not exactly as Wotc presents it, since I like little of what has been dished out so far.

For starters, the spellplague will have a different origin...

It begins
The ritual had been interupted at the last moment by a band of adventurers. Distracted at a crucial moment, Shar had let control of the shadow weave slip for the briefest of moments.

Enough time for Mystra to grasp it away.

The Lady of Mysteries briefly felt Shar's anger as she slipped back to Dweommerheart.

The Lady of Loss, letting that emotional mask fall away, smiled. It had been a while since she last felt contentment. She sent a mental missive to the soon-to-be scapegoat, containing only one word:

Now.

-----------------------------

A soon as she arrived in her domain, Mystra knew something was wrong.

Ungodly pain wracked her, tearing at her mind and form.

And then she knew.

Shar had never meant to keep her creation. The potent poison, disguised as a dark weapon, had been custom made for the Mother of All Magic. Expertly crafted long ago and hidden for eons, revealed only recently, its true purpose was not to compete with what Mystra embodied, but to weaken the goddess.

But to what end?

Control of her divine realm slipped, and she felt a presence manifesting in front of her.

Looking up from her prone position, She saw Cyric raise Razor's Edge, elated vindication etched on his mad face, madness and hatred in his eyes.

Well, ok. I kinda like you anyway....

But if it comes down to it, you go out ruff. You know, with a big burrito slap upside the head before you're chucked.

That depends on what you think the rounded number for pi is.

Assuming that you think it is 3.14 like the rest of the world, then I guess its a joke you didn't get.

It's a legitimate word, so as long as it isn't being used as derogatory towards anyone, then there shouldn't be a problem. And I didn't use it in such a way.

I was referring to the larger (rounded) number; an 8 does not come after the 4.

In case there was a misunderstanding, I wasn't criticizing or threatening you for using the word "bastard," I was sincerely hoping that the level of censorship on these boards is not as severe as I have been led to believe. I apologize if I left you with a different impression (it just occurred to me that what I posted could easily be interpreted the wrong way).

Well, as it truly hasn't been solved, yet, I took the liberty of just typing random keys on my number pad. I could have tracked down the actually digits, but now that they are in the millions, I figured it wasn't worth the time.

And since the majority of people that know of pi think it is just 3.14, I wasn't that concerned.

Not at all, my man. It's a valid question. I wouldn't have used it if I thought it was being offensive. No worries. ;)

I'll be pre-ordering the campaign & player's guides, for sure. If Ed Greenwood is on board with the relaunch, then so am I.

I'm playing a shared campaign on a Pbp so I'll be continuing with 3.5 until the end of the campaign, then I'll move on most likely and play in FR 4e. As I'm new to the campaign I have no idea how long it will last for (especially at the pace its going). I don't feel like buying a bajillion splat books just to play in FR 3.5e

-The most glaring change isn't geographic in nature, or even "D&D rules" in nature. It's the 100 +/- time jump that does it.

IMO its necessary so we don't have people saying things like "you're playing the game wrong" and citing splat book #176 as to why my portrayal of a city is wrong.

-Two points:

A) It's not necessary, and, by going on canon, someone who cites book #176 would be correct. That said, that is Faerûn 616, the official setting, and not Faerûn 226, your setting.

B) In most cases, old lore and such and such is still 100% valid. Unless specifically noted as being changed, (and, with 3 books only, don't count on it) specific subtleties- such as, say, the number of wives that men in Turmish take- are still going to to use pre-4e materials sources.
