Hey there, Had pretty much all the Forgotten Realms stuff published under TSR for 2nd Edition...and then I left the hobby for a looooong time...and then traded all my books to a local hobby shop about 10 years ago to buy Warhammer miniatures.

Recently got back into RPGing (about 3 years ago) with WFRP 3rd (FFG) and then with Star Wars: Edge of the Empire (also FFG) after that (curently running two seperate campaigns). I am really enjoying Star Wars and its narative dice system, but 5th ed caught my eye at the local shop, and I'm wondering what people's impression of it is....thinking I might be swayed and convinced to jump back on the horse drawn cart so to speak.

I've recognized allot of Forgotten Realms names and lore being thrown around....is it now the official Core D&D world? What ever happened to Ravenloft and Dark Sun?

Thanks for your patience, I feel like I got seperated from my extended family for a couple of decades and now I'm just getting reintroduced...

What do you all recommend as far as a world guide (guides?) these days? In the brief skimming I have done in the FR forum thread, I see that there is some uncertainty on the current state of things in the Realms...Is there a general concensus on what is current? Is 'current' necessarily the best/most interesting? If not, where should I start? I'm kind of starting from ground zero here, so any feedback would be welcome and most appreciated.

Thanks!

I would start with the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide: it has the most plot hooks in it.  Once you have decided your top-five places to set your campaign, look over the 4e FRCS and FR Player Guide to see if your plan was nuked in advance.  There is no 5e FRCS (yet), so you have some room to decide what you want to change / put back / add in.

I am DM'ing Hoard of the Dragon Queen / Rise of Tiamat - plus - building a Narfell campaign skeleton - plus - my DMPC is moving into Neverwinter just ahead of the events of HotDQ.  My plate is full and I probably look / act a bit scatterbrained.

If you want to do a "new frontiers" campaign, set it in the Vilhon Reach.  There is a bunch of unpopulated space plus several Great Powers near the region; the PCs have a place to go for more resources or other help.  Since the whole game is a new frontier for you IRL, the theme fits.

Ravenloft - which I'll admit I've never played or been a big fan of - can be fit in to Forgotten Realms easily: plant a Haunted House wherever convenient and appropriate and just go from there.

Dark Sun - My favorite 4e setting, due in part to I was burying the Ashes of Athas creative team under lots of hare-brained ideas (some of which they improved and used!).  The 5e rules need psionics added before DS can be rolled out again.  Maybe in a few years?
