| #1rhensilverwingMay 28, 2008 17:25:40 | Just another silly question - how on earth do you work spell resistance out? I get the impression that it only comes from wearing certain special items of equipment, where it is stated within the description of that piece of equipment, (not that I've ever seen any in my readings), or is natural to certains monsters or some such, as the DM guide is really vague on it. There's quite a lot of information about opposing spell resistance and how to work things out with it, or against it, but nothing that says how to actually work it out in the first place, or where it comes from etc. Can anyone shed any light on this - if it's insignificant that's fine, but seeing it appears to be quite an important factor of the spell casting process, I don't want to be missing out a crucial part of it. My thanks |
| #2StiggerMay 28, 2008 17:42:39 | Some items grant spell resistance, a few spells do as well, some creatures have it naturally (notably drow)... as to where it comes from, its not often stated specifically beyond the creature in question just is. Almost forgot, the monk class offers it as well at higher levels, as do a few PrC's. |
| #3suin_bahhar_02May 28, 2008 20:24:05 | I always treated it in discriptions as absorbation of the spells (but this is agruably more of a spell immunity effect like on golems). Sometimes as deflections or magic that seems to flow around a spellresisting thing. |
| #4red_wizardMay 29, 2008 19:02:28 | It's simple. The caster in question must beat the targets SR with a roll do 1d20 + caster level. Thus a 15 level caster would automatically beat any SR lower than 15, and have to roll to beat anything about 15. -RW |
| #5rhensilverwingMay 30, 2008 17:05:35 | It's simple. No no I know how to work out beating spell resistance (The DM Guide is very clear on that); what I want to know is, how do you work out if a target has Spell Resistance to beat - where does Spell Resistance come from? Though the comments of the guys above are helpful and likely solve my problem - I just wondered if I was missing out on something crucial because of how important it seems to be in individual Spell descriptions...? Though there are whole hosts of rules you might never use in an entire campaign ;) |
| #6StiggerMay 30, 2008 18:21:52 | Should be mentioned in the stat block, though I don't recall ever seeing many, if any, mentions of what the source of the SR is. |
| #7lord_karsusMay 31, 2008 1:31:58 | Should be mentioned in the stat block, though I don't recall ever seeing many, if any, mentions of what the source of the SR is. -Indeed. Some have it naturally, some have it due to items, some have it due to magic, and so on. But, if they do, it'll be listed. |
| #8jhaladMay 31, 2008 3:13:10 | No no I know how to work out beating spell resistance (The DM Guide is very clear on that); what I want to know is, how do you work out if a target has Spell Resistance to beat - where does Spell Resistance come from? I look at spell resistance as a creature's ability to ignore the weave, for good or for bad. Magic warps reality, in some way. SR is the ability of a creature to ignore this warping, to shrug it off, ignore it. I believe that if a wizard casts a spell at a creature with SR, he (or she) will feel the immediate war between his weave, and their resistance, and needs to mentally fight it (1d20+caster level vs SR). In the same way that a player can know whether or not his spell failed (the target saved), or not, he knows whether or not the creature is resisting his spell. Does that work for you? |

Ah, sorry, wrong impression. ![]() But yeah, if they have it, it'll be in their stat block. -RW |
| #10rhensilverwingMay 31, 2008 15:44:07 | Thanks for your input anyway, Red_Wizard @Jhalad, no no no it's not about what spell resistance feels like when encountering it - I just wanted to know it comes from! You explain what you think it is, and working things out with spell resistance; thanks, but I wanted to know how to work it out - not how to work things out with it xD It just seemed an oddity to me because every spell in the book states whether it applies or not, but not how to work out if a target even has spell resistance to see if you need to consider it applying or not. |
| #11jhaladJun 01, 2008 3:03:50 | Thanks for your input anyway, Red_Wizard Well, then I'm not quite sure what you are asking. I know that Spell Resistance shows up in a creatures/characters stats under Special Qualities. If it isn't listed there, then there is no SR. It's entirely up to your DM (or you, if you are the DM) as to whether or not your reveal this information to the player before he or she casts a spell. I think someone has already covered this is a post. Also, on average, conjuration spells are the only spells that don't get resisted by SR, on average. |
| #12DiffanJun 01, 2008 3:38:36 | Also, creatures with immunity to Magic like Golems have immunity to magic (ie. spell that are affected by Spell resistance). But not to spells with out spell resistance. Thats when it comes in handy, knowing and NOT knowing what spells you cast can be restricted by SR. And lets not forget a spell caster without the Spell Penetration feat only adds his caster level up to 10 to beat a SR (1d20 + 10 max) |
| #13rhensilverwingJun 01, 2008 6:40:42 | haha my question still hasn't really been answered, except by Lord Karsus, but I think I've got the idea of it now. Has anybody ever encountered any equipment that gives you spell resistance? |
| #14red_wizardJun 01, 2008 9:07:03 | The DMG has three suits of armor that grant SR IIRC. But as always, items granting it will say so in their write up. -RW |
| #15rhensilverwingJun 02, 2008 8:49:00 | Oh! I'll look those up Thanks Red_Wizard ;) |
| #16alkasynJun 05, 2008 11:39:53 | I always assumed that the Drows spell resistance came from their strenght of mind. I was thinknig about the same topic lately, too, but nothing else came to my mind. |

Either the "Descent of the Drow" High magic Ritual included a resistance to this, to prevent the descent from being full-blown genocide, or it was perhaps a a blessing of Lolth, to protect her "children" from the radiation of the Faerzress. |
| #18suin_bahhar_02Jun 05, 2008 16:36:21 | Intrigueing. Lolths blessings seems the most likely of those options. Putting such protection in the curse is something the goodaligned elves would think of though. If the high mages had any knowledge on the dangers of faerzress that is. |

If the high mages had any knowledge on the dangers of faerzress that is. -Well, being as that Faerzress' were retconned to have been created by the Elven High Magic, I'd think they'd have some inkling about them. ;) -Either hypothesis works, though, really. |
| #20StiggerJun 06, 2008 8:20:23 | Created by high magic? That's just stupid.... |
| #21lord_karsusJun 06, 2008 8:24:46 | Created by high magic? That's just stupid.... -Come on. The entire situation is stupid. You think this one more detail makes to that much more? I think it semi-salvages the situation. |
| #22StiggerJun 06, 2008 8:52:14 | Sort of... I tend to ignore the Faerzress for the most part though... resolving that whole 'radiation infuses the underdark and should kill you' thing in my head just doesn't usually work for me. But then, I hated that drow equipment melts in daylight thing too... |
| #23DiffanJun 06, 2008 9:06:19 | -A byproduct of living in the Underdark, where Faerzress radiation constantly bombards them. So why don't Duergar have SR too? There in the Underdark as much and long as the Drow, maybe even deeper? |

There in the Underdark as much and long as the Drow, maybe even deeper? -Which would lend creedence to the hypothesis above, as Duergar are involved nowhere in either situation (something intentional by the Selu'Taar and Lolth's blessing) |
| #25StiggerJun 06, 2008 13:41:54 | Nope, don't bother with novels 90% of the time. Can't say it matters much though, as I hardly ever venture into the Realms Below with my campaigns... and even then, not much farther than Skullport. |
| #26lord_karsusJun 07, 2008 23:15:40 | Nope, don't bother with novels 90% of the time. -Would you like to be told about what was revealed about Faerzress', then? |
| #27StiggerJun 09, 2008 8:48:53 | Sure, why not, can't hurt anything but my opinion of WotC, which I'm not sure could really get much lower. :D |
| #28lord_karsusJun 09, 2008 10:15:38 | -Here you go. After reading that, consider what I said in my original suggestion: Show Faerzress' were created when the Elven race was casting the Descent of the Drow High Magic ritual. The ritual turned the Dark Elves into Drow, and created Faerzress'. Faerzress', asides for messing up teleportarion and divination magic, and empowering those Drowcraft magical items, act as a "magnet" for the Drow race, keeping them in the Underdark, for the most part. Think of Faerzress' as those Bug-Light things, onlyfor Drow. |
| #29StiggerJun 09, 2008 14:11:15 | That's far stupider than I imagined it would be... yet something else to ignore. |
| #30lord_karsusJun 09, 2008 22:50:41 | -Isn't it? :P |
| #31rhensilverwingJun 10, 2008 5:46:50 | Haha btw I've worked it all out now, and am inventing armours with it. hmmmmm so without Spell Resistance there is no chance a spell can miss except if you can make a save on it? |
| #32lord_karsusJun 10, 2008 9:27:25 | hmmmmm so without Spell Resistance there is no chance a spell can miss except if you can make a save on it? -Depends on the spell. Some automatically hit, some don't. |
| #33rhensilverwingJun 11, 2008 12:41:33 | Thanks, I'll look into that |
