Spellmarks et cetera

May 15, 2008 0:43:24 A) A new and exciting way of customizing your character, giving him that little edge that truly makes him unique and memorable?; or

B) Eberron's Dragonmarks repackaged and stuffed down the FR's metaphorical throat?

Opinions? So far I'm leaning toward a little of both. I like that they're not tied to any specific bloodlines, and I like that there is a social stigma involved, but I'm still not sure they fit the setting, consequence of the Spellplague or not.

The Et Cetera:
The Changelands are mentioned to be places where Abeir forced its way into Toril for a moment (a confluence of the planes, if you will), during the Spellplague. Now, I don't have the Holy Bible of Realms Lore (AGHotR), and I'm not sure which old box to blow the dust off of to find out, so I'll pose the question to you fine gentlemen who know more about the setting than I ever will: What exactly is Abeir?

In the past, I've heard the world referred to, alternately, as Toril, or Abeir-Toril, but never have I seen Abeir stand alone. Might someone enlighten me?

May 15, 2008 10:23:52 I like the idea of spellscars. At the very least they could make for some memorable NPCs and if ones players are good and don't make a spellscared character every time they make a new character, they provide for a lot of good opportunies for roleplay, at least in this DMs humble opinion.

I just started reading Eberron stuff recently and recognized the spellscars as being very similar to dragonmarks, though I do like the social distinctions between the two. That should be enough to make the scars have their own flavor.

May 15, 2008 13:28:23 I'm not really fond of the idea of spellscars. I don't play in Eberron, and my knowledge of that setting is close to nothing, so I can't really comment on their closeness to Eberron.

But spellscars generally, they seem a little too much like wild-magic, and I never liked the FR idea of wild magic areas and effects. Plus, the general idea of a permanent spell effect that's caused by residual energies of Mystra's death, yuck. It's like getting super-powers from a cosmic storm, seems too powerful and B-movie (or comic book hero) rather than Forgotten Realms.
