Spellscarred?

In Rich Baker's novel Swordmage, one of the characters is spellscarred from the spellplague.

Anyone have any idea (other than the scars and lowlight vision ability) what these might do?

Maybe like dragonmarks in Eberron?

As I've read, so far, they may be able to do much of anything. Sort of like a feat or ability that is always in play. Aoth from the Haunted Lands trilogy was ably to see precognitive images and through illusions to a degree.

More or less, see the "truth."

-Bloodforge Golems existed before Warforged, and are very similar.

-That said, one of the Countdown to the Realms articles explains what Spellcscars are, and if I am not mistaken, some of the things (might be all of them, might not) they can do are revealed.

I was thinking the same thing. I was pondering this and I hope they use something similar to the Birthright system. For those who don't know, some characters had a fraction of divine blood in them. Depending on how high they rolled at character creation, the better the power was. Instead of rolling, perhaps a making it a feat, or feat tree similar to Eberron. Or have an extra at will for minor Spellscarred characters and encounter or daily powers for those characters who take two or three feats. Perhaps even the equivalent to a low level ritual.

I don't play Eberron either, but it was the closest thing I could think of to what a spellscar might be.

Sorry if the "E" word offended you.

My guess is that they will work like the Dragonmarked feats from the Eberron Campaign setting. One feat getting you the weakest version and up on through however many feats they feel necessary to the top. The ranger I'm dreaming up for my next realms game will be spellscarred. I found the idea interesting when I read Swordmage

Could be as soon as the campaign setting that's out in August. Swordmage was out in early May and I'd bet that Rich has had some idea of what stats he thinks she should have since he began writing her. If not, I bet we see stats of NPCs (including the new ones) start trickling in via DDI.

Will you just answer for Rich already! Always trying to have people seek facts around here. It's straight up sad, I tell you.

Either way, I would personally hope that they wouldn't stat her. Well, that's a lie, 'cause I'm interested in it myself. But, the moment it begins, we'll be right back where we started with people complaining the NPC's are too powerful. Even if she's only level 8 or something. Sooner or later someone will create a character that's level 10, then level 12....

I'm aware. And find it sad. You would most likely enjoy this novel, as 4e really isn't much of a prominence in the book to begin with.

The chicks Spellscar is probably the only thing that seems out of place from your basic FR novel. If you can stand a human having dark vision because of a birth defect, then you'd be fine with it.

Along with a nice power I think the scars will have a drawback attached, like lowered magic defences.

I think one of the posts (either today June's Previews And Beyond or the old Countdown to the Realms article) mentioned that there were drawbacks to having a spellscar.

And I don't think any of the characters in the book (with the exception of the Lich who didn't have much page time) were over level 10. My guess is 6-8, but you are right. It does start a sort of arms race of NPC power.

That being said, do you really think they are going to leave Elminster and Drizzt's stats out of the book? Every edition I've played up until this one (2nd, 3rd) has had stats for the novel characters. Could be DDI content this time though.

I think one of the posts (either today June's Previews And Beyond or the old Countdown to the Realms article) mentioned that there were drawbacks to having a spellscar.

I think one of the primary drawbacks will involve social perception. Diplomacy, persuade, and stuff like that will get a negative -2 or something.

And I don't think any of the characters in the book (with the exception of the Lich who didn't have much page time) were over level 10. My guess is 6-8, but you are right. It does start a sort of arms race of NPC power.

I don't either, but it was to make a point.

That being said, do you really think they are going to leave Elminster and Drizzt's stats out of the book? Every edition I've played up until this one (2nd, 3rd) has had stats for the novel characters. Could be DDI content this time though.

I believe stats will be left out of the books, simply because of DDI. It seems they are trying to strip the campaign guide of anything that was perceived as negative. They'll let those people who want this extra fluff go to DDI to get it and leave the rest of the stuff as bare bones as possible.
#28

zaeshir

Jun 05, 2008 14:41:57
I think you are probably very correct about the social penalties to spellscaring. Might even include an outright penalty to CHA. In Swordmage, the villan, whose name escapes me atm, says he would have been interested Kara if it had not been for the spellscar. Those things really freak people out.

I'd still like to see some of the stats though, specifically for Kara and for Geran. I'm going to be getting a DDI subscription, so if they put that info there, I'm ok with that too

Doesn't appear that is the case. The character in question was born "normal." The spellscar manifested at puberty. As she was a noble, and spellscars are frowned upon, she would have most definitely been forced to hide it if she could.

Besides, its already established that some of these spellscarred abilities are always active, making it impossible to dim the "lightshow."

Wow, just like mutant genetic abilities in Marvel Comics?

I thought the idea behind spellscars was more that they were a remnant of having personally been hit by magical energies of the Changelands (or the cerulean fire of the Spellplague, same energy really), not that spellscars could be passed from generation to generation, or that they were things that could show up randomly like mutations.

Evidently, it gets stuck in the genes and gets passed on. In all actuality, its the only way to do it if you want to keep spellscars alive and well. Most people who survived the Year of Blue Fire would have already passed. And current inhabitants of the Realms know damn well to stay away from the Plaguelands (not Changelands, mon cher manipulateur ;) ).

If spellscars are to be readily available in all regions, it would have to be genetic.

Indeed. But Plaguewrought lands can still pop up in more areas than the Plaguelands only. And some people actually are gonna take a pilgrimage to those areas where little cottages or grand temples with members of the Order of Blue Fire will guide them to aquiring and harnessing a spellscar or plaguechanged body.

Possibly. But nothing is concrete at the moment.

Also, remember that the Order of Blue Fire is a fanatic cult. How many actually venture into the existing blue fire and come out spellscarred, rather than plaguechanged--or dead? Much different stories there.

And I realize that some people don't want anything to do with the "New" Realms or the "New" edition of D&D (I have a friend like this, he swears he'll never read any of the core books). Well I took a video without fetisch gear to post, but in the anime the main character is always wipped so he comes back to his old self after transforming into a horny demon monster thing and saving the day. sooo well I guess you don´t neet all that much whipping after all.

I don't need any. But, when you are a doudou, you simply take what you get.

I'm not very familiar with the public lewdness laws so I wouldn't be much help to you anyway:D

I was manipulated,. I assure you, I do not own a trench coat.

Heh, I think I'll pass on the chains and the scarring. Sune-worshipper, remember? No scars or brands for this chick. Tattoos done well, some of those can be quite nice, though. :D

I think of spellscars as more of a mystical tattoo. With glowy special effects.

I don't know. They sort of remind me of the cyborganic replacements in Star Wars for some reason. Granted, these are two different things, but they just seem to stick out as a sore thumb in a way. Not so much mystical as an impediment to the natural way of things.

I think you did, and I do remember seeing the article, I just don't recall much about it.

-It basically explained- without too much detail- what Spellscars are, what they did, who has them, and some of the implications.

Depend how "natural" magic is in your Realms. The Weave used to imply life was linked to the weave, but apparently that was a lie. The 15th century realms have life even generate magic of its own (my view of the more magical exploits, Fey pacts and Primal powersource). A spellscar is something that is a relic of the old weave, scarring those who got changed by its wild magics. It's a little bit of the essence of Mystra that gives the bearer some inate or intiuitive control over its spellscars powers.

do we know what kinds of powers are given? What does the ranger have in Swordmage for example?

Lowlight vision...really can't remember anything else.

She was quite feared and respected, but I think that was more to skill than scar.

Well, at least they are not as powerful as dragonmarks

Yeah I'm not sure, but it's possible she just did not use whatever power was attached to it. They may be saving that for later books. There are two more in the series after all.

True. But Aoth in Undead--a book with a very fast and revealing pace--sort of backs up the theory that one scar = one power. Again, there could very well be more powers he uncovers later, but I don't think so.

In game terms, this scar will need to be bought. Since one scar gives one power, you'll need to spend more for an additional scar and an additional power.

Wish I was more into the mechanics, so I could give a better example.
