Does anyone know what sourcebook the Staff of the Shadow War can be found in?

The staff is mentioned in the Cormyr: Tearing of the Weave adventure, but no source is noted. It does mention that it has 3 charges for the Armor of Darkness and Darkbolt spells, which are noted as being in the FRCS book. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Hmmm, I haven't heard of that artifact. I don't think it's listed in Magic of Faerun, which has a lot of FR specific items. If you can't find that particular staff, the DMG has a version that could be used in place of it. Here's a link to the item-

-I remember someone else bringing this up. If I recall correctly, there was a gaffe somewhere, and there aren't actually stats for this item.

Now that i've read most of the adventure, i'm going to assume that the staff of the shadow war is a magical item that allows a caster of Shadow Weave Magic to cast Darkbolt charges from the staff as well as the shadow armor listed or maybe armor of darkness. Either way, I'm pretty sure it's a magical item that's only been mentioned within that adventure.

Darn, I guess I'm just going to have to assume it's a staff with 3 charges that can be used for either Darkbolt or Armour of Darkness spells, which is kinda weird since one is a 4th level spell and the other 5th level spell. Also, because of the nature of the staff and the spells it cast, I'm going to say this is a Shadow Weave magic item.

(seriously, who ever was in charge of proof reading this adventure before it got published, needs to be fired!)

Not every magic item needs a full stat block, nor does every magic item in the Forgotten Realms have one. Many magic items have only parenthetical notes on what powers they possess, and say nothing of CL, market price, crafting prerequisites, lore, activation method, etc...possibly since this info (if truly necessary) can be extrapolated from the standard item creation rules.

If it denotes the spells that it has and the charges that are left then I imagine little more information is necessary. The fact that the item only has three charges remaining is more than enough cause not to waste 1/3 of a page on it. If the magic item was part of a treasure horde from a creature with the Shadow Weave Magic feat (or from a dungeon/site where shadow adepts or Shar worshippers dwelt) then one can assume it aught to be a shadow weave item.

Is this suppose to be the same as the Shadowstaff of Gorothir mentioned in the Vanrakdoom web enhancement?

Wow man, it's nice to know that there is at least one other person out there reaching deep to try help me out! It's much appreciated. I didn't even know that web enchancement existed.

I checked out the Vanrakdoom adventure and it turns out the Shadowstaff of Gorothir is just another name for The Shadowstaff Major Artifact listed in the DM guide on page 281. Unfortunately that item is not it, and infact is way too overpowered for this adventure. But thank you anyways for trying...

Did you ever get an answer on this? My crew is just deciding what to do with the 3 or 4 of these that they ended up with, and I can't find even a cost to sell it. It seems more like a ring of spell storing, since it only has three charges, but it could also be a misc magic item that has three charges per day, as well, which would up its value quite a bit. Of course, the adventure was a Monty Haul one anyway, so I'll probably downvalue it to keep it in control.

On what page of Cormyr are the shadow staves listed?

Never got an answer on this. I believe Lord Karus has the best guess.

In my game, the staff has only 3 charges before it is used up. Which only makes sense to me since they are such powerful spells being cast by underpowered NPC's. When identified, I said it's an evil item, which means they can't use it without taking negative levels and risking change in alignment (all the PC's are good aligned). Because of the nature of the staff, and the spells it cast, I also said it's a Shadow Weave item, and since they don't use the Shadow Weave, they'd take some nasty Wisdom damage at the very least for just trying to use the staff. When appraised checked, I told them they would only be able to get away with selling such a weapon on the black market, because Cormyr would have some laws against selling evil items. Cormyr has been known to have a very stringent goverment in my campaign. The good PC's were then careful to only take one staff in inventory to later hand over as evidence of their adventure.

It wasn't an issue when I ran this adventure, they lasted one encounter and, as I made them Shadow weave items (which surely they had to be), the party who had a Cleric of Mystra with them destroyed all the staffs they found.

But as already said this adventure was never proof read properly.

But are any of them?

-Certainly some more than others.
