| #1barthalasAug 15, 2008 17:57:02 | Okay, this is not to start a flame war just an observation on my personal opinion on the new Realms. First a qualifying statement: I like post apocalyptic settings. I loved movies like Escape form NY (the New York parts), Escape form LA (the LA parts), The Resident Evil movies (especially the last one), the Mad Max collections, the Omega Man, etc... Also loved PC games like Fallout and game settings like Darwin's World. Now the new Realms have some of that post apocalyptic feel to me. Not a total destruction of "civiization as we knew it" but some. The old Realms are in the past but the new Realms has taken up in it's place. Some of the old survives, some are ruins and some are new societies/locales which has sprung from the ashes of their predecessor, and some are just plain new. Not saying anyone else should think of it this way or my way of thinking is right or wrong, and my mind may change later as I only have the excerpts and this board for info but that's how it feels for now to me. |
| #2alediranAug 15, 2008 18:00:26 | For that you have Dark Sun. For me the golden age feeling of the realms was what got me in. No other RPG setting is set in the golden age, they are all past golden age and that gets repetitive and boring after the second setting. |

Again, I'm not making a quality statement for others. Just for my personal tastes. |

I'm a bit with Barthalas here and its why I still sort of look forward to what 4e might bring. I love apocalyptic crap. The movies he (she?) mentioned are ones that I get into--Independence Day, The Day After, The Day After Tomorrow, etc. Any other flick that threatens or destroys the world as we know it, I pretty much get into. That's the problem with Dark Sun. There is no feeling for what you loved about it before it went up in smoke. Nothing to reminisce about, I guess you would say. Things just are. |

| #6IluvrienAug 15, 2008 18:43:01 | The FR Forums... where else on the internet will you get two groups of people; one saying that they love that the new Realms are post-apocalyptic and another group saying that the "old guard" shouldn't worry because it isn't very post-apocalyptic... on the same side? :D |
| #7JudgeDookieAug 15, 2008 18:46:33 | He.. Are you laughing at me!!! ![]() Wait, stupid...he's just sating a gender. ![]() Note to self: "He" doesn't necessarily mean "He-he." |

Fallen empires, risen civilizations that crawl from the ashes...Imaskar, Netheril, Cormanthyr... |
| #918DELTAAug 15, 2008 22:30:20 | -Yeah the setting has always been post-apocalyptic. The Tear Fall, The Sundering, The Crown Wars, The Orcgate Wars, Karsus Folly, The Time of Troubles. I know I have missed something else. Then you have the Spellplague, an event and period of time that totally transforms the Realms, Kill's God's, Merges Abeir with Toril. Yeah now that's apocalyptic. ;) 18DELTA :P |

Taken the words out of my mind. :D It was allways like that. In a big and in the small details (like the drow apocalypse, Lolth fells silent, that is really apocalyptic). You can even go over the ocean, where a complete culture fights for their survival like the aztecs did against Cortes. Or take an adventure in Hellgate Keep when devils and demons poured out, what can be more apocalyptic than that? What's about King Killer Star and the events when the mythall was brought down by this lich? After that half of the FR were tortured by the dragons, the bad dragons burned, destroyed, raged and some got stronger and all the good dragons fled away. Godwars, devils and demons fighting and corrupting, scheming, dragons on the lose, that's not apocalyptic enough? Not even Emmerlich can think of something like that. Not sure in wich FR you played, but the one I came to know are allways near to death and the next RSE. |
| #11umbralknightAug 16, 2008 8:57:50 | If you like post-apocolyptic stuff, I'd say Myth Drannor takes the cake. Nothing is a better example of a golden age gone to hell. |

| #13umbralknightAug 16, 2008 9:18:49 | I stand corrected! :D |

Yeah now that's apocalyptic. ;) Come on, you happy freak. "Apocalyptic" cannot be the word here. When you get apocalyptic, you're talking worldwide. Since ToT, when has there really been a worldwide calamity? Yes, there have been RSE's that have shaken a parts of Faerun here and there, but nothing that has completely affected everyone on the planet. Now, I'm not arguing about the RSE's, just the scale in which they have taken place. BTW: :D ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() :bounce: :bounce: :pile: :heehee :invasion: |
| #17leirilAug 16, 2008 13:42:29 | Yes, there have been RSE's that have shaken a parts of Faerun here and there, but nothing that has completely affected everyone on the planet. 1373 DR (Year of Rogue Dragons), Sammaster, Dracorage, only 20 years later ;) 1374 DR, one year later, next Tearfall and now you can play in a burned world with many dragons gone, others still more powerfull, new dracoliches and a run after the dragon eggs. It is said that a new Dragonfall War knocks on the door. What do you need more in a Dungeons and Dragons game, than a war with these monsters in a world "still reeling from the aftereffects" of this events? I would say, if this is still not enough for your fantasy to create a world gone to hell, you should really think about some aliens with nukes invading the FR. |
| #18lord_karsusAug 16, 2008 13:46:40 | Yep, that's why I like it. -Right. Notice, I said this is the mantra of the Forgotten Realms in general, not just the "new" Forgotten Realms. This was the case in the "old" Forgotten Realms as well. |
| #19JudgeDookieAug 16, 2008 13:47:33 | 1373 DR (Year of Rogue Dragons), Sammaster, Dracorage, only 20 years later ;) True, true. You got me. Had the books not sucked to such a great degree, I might have remembered that offhand. As is: ![]() Stupid Dragon Rage!!! ![]() |
| #20lord_karsusAug 16, 2008 13:49:14 | Now, I'm not arguing about the RSE's, just the scale in which they have taken place. -Most people seem to dislike the ratio and density of all of the RSEs, as of late. My view on this, is very much like how I like it in comics: I don't want massive, world-changing events to take place every summer in the comics that I read. I like downtime, for things to adjust, and for the impact of all of the big changes to sink in. I don't like Marvel's current plans, with House of M, and then Civil War the next summer, and then World War Hulk and Secret Invasion the very next summer...Too much at once. |

Give me some minutes after I made a post, to edit it and bring the thoughts in, wich pop into my mind out of nowhere after I wrot something. ;) :D I have no idea what you are relating here--never heard of it. Dragons of Faerun, but I am sure in some novels are the details for this events. ![]() |

Give me some minutes after I made a post, to edit it and bring the thoughts in, wich pop into my mind out of nowhere after I wrot something. ;) :D Time is money, bud!! You gonna pay me to wait for your thoughts? Want me to create a PayPal account for you so I can just sit on my ass while you collaborate with yourself?! If I had a $2:00 a minute rate, then maybe. Unfortunately, I think you're a bit quicker than you are trying to express. The $6.00 I'd project getting with waiting would probably be reduced to close to $3.20 or so. Either you get dumber or type faster. No excuses!!! ![]() |
| #26lord_karsusAug 19, 2008 18:24:36 | Dragons of Faerun, but I am sure in some novels are the details for this events. -Nope. The plothook was mentioned in DoF, and that's all. It was presumed that this was going to be the origin of Dragonborn in the Forgotten Realms, but, nope, this was not the case. |
| #27markustay63Aug 19, 2008 18:28:32 | Plothooks in 3e were like one-night-stands. You use them once and never call them back. :P |
| #28JudgeDookieAug 19, 2008 19:44:01 | Plothooks in 3e were like one-night-stands. Eloquent and true. Unfortunately, few were ever as satisfying. |
