I read on wikipedia that Faerun has multiple Tarrasques. Can anyone confirm this? Why would Faerun have more than one?

There is supposedly some planet in a starjammer setting inhabited by tarrasques (plural), but none that I am aware of in FR. Save for a 2e module (how the mighty have fallen), I don't recall it ever being mentioned in the FR setting.

One Tarrasque appeared in the old Forgotten Realms DC comics, where it was summoned by a mad wizard using the heads of each of the major varieties of chromatic and metallic dragons. The Tarrasque was sent back to wherever it came from by the end. It's short rampage was somewhere between Dalelands and the Dragonreach, in about 1357-8.

I don't know if this counts for the quota of 1 Tarrasque per world though. Shouldn't do, since it was summoned.

I heard the other lairs in the Anauroch somewhere.

-As far as I know, there is only one. There isn't much about the Faerûnian Tarrasque. All we really know about it was that it was part of the material components for Karsus' Avatar, it had great importance to the primitive Taxabi, where it was known as 'The Sleeper', and that supposedly, the Herald's Holdfast was attacked by the Tarrasque, but stood up to the assault.

Now that you mention it, wasn't there another referrance to Big T as The Sleeper being some sort of idolistic worship figurehead for some tribe or something like that...or is that the Taxi-cabby people you spoke of ?

Wikipedia being incorrect? Guess there is a first for everything. With all of the epic level wizards and liches in Faerun, Im surprised that even one Tarrasque can survive for long. It may be powerful, but it still has a CR of 20. The Chosen of Mystra would probably have destroyed it at some point.

There is some info Here, and some more specific Spelljammer info Here.

It seems the Terrasque is unique, but it is arguable if it's really one unique Terrasque per prime material world (making it not really so unique), and the creatures on Falx are exactly like Terrasque, but NOT terrasques... hows that for a work-around?

There was also a recent episode of Destination Truth wherein they searched for Earth's Terrasque, which hangs out in Vietnam. Maybe the Terrasque should be native to kara-Tur (Malatra Region) - it would fit in with all the other 'Giant Monsters' over there.

I threw an advanced Tarrasque into my 3.5 Realms game (thank you old-school Dragon Magazine for printing stats) and had it summoned forth by crazed Malar Woshippers bent on wiping out the Silver Marches and returning it to a true and proper primal/primitive state.

That was a kick ass battle.

Anyway, there's one (non-canon, admitedly) reason why the Realms might have more than one Tarrasque. After all, if Malar can get the Ityak Ortheel (Elf Eater) going, it follows he could awaken a Tarrasque with the aid of his most devoted followers.

Ooooh!

You just totally gave me an excuse to resurrect the Tarrasque in my game.

I'll save it for after the Cleric earns back her powers for failing her deity. She'll be an insanely powerful Epic Cleric capable of laying waste to hoards of undead.

It'll be cool to see how she does against the undead version of a creature type that slew two of her adventuring companions.

I don't know, I always felt an undead Terrasque was kinda like an undead troll, or Lycanthrope.... or anything else with regeneration for that matter...

The Terrasque, no matter how often you kill it, always comes back... so how do you end up with an Undead one?

Still, it is an delisciously evil thing for a DM to spring on his uber-players.
-Do they even have souls? Deep philosophical question, there...:P

Perhaps, being as there is only one per Prime Plane, the Terrasque is in fact the 'soul' of the plane itself, personified.

Yeah, the mod required you to get the Terrasque's spleen for Karsus as a spell component for his Avatar Form spell. The basic idea is that you can't convince him not to do it, so you might as well be part of history! The real fun comes in if you kill the Terrasque in a way that leaves his spleen as the largest piece of the monster. He starts regenerating from that piece and you've got to hurry back to Karsus' city or risk facing the monster all over again. But there is only one and at the time he is unkillable. It is only later that taking it to -30 hp and then using a well worded wish takes out the terrasque for ever.

Course the new terrasque is pretty nasty. A level 30 solo brute. Only the Ancient Red Dragon and Orcus come close (30 and 33 respectively for those at home who don't have the 4e MM).

A planet of Tarrasque means that several could be summoned to Faerun at any time. The Imaskar Empire made a habit of opening portals. Then there are the sauren, the netherese, the shoon, etc. Surprised Faerun isnt overrun with Tarrasques.

As to if the Tarrasque can be turned into an undead, its theoretically possible if the Tarrasque is made permanently dead with a Wish spell. As to the type of undead it would be raised as, any speculation?

Well, if it was killed by negative energy drain (which is how despoiler magic worked in Darksun), it would have arisen again as an undead (possibly).

Also, since it is indeed technically dead, the magic that surrounds the Terrasque would still be activated, and a new one would appear on that world a decade later!

Now you have two on one world - maybe they could fight...

Anyhow, I don't think it should become a Lich like Dragons do... perhaps a form of deathknight, since it's just a sensless killing machine.

4E Tarrasque simply cannot die. If reduced to 0 hit points it returns to the core of the earth, asleep. It was created by the primordials as a weapon.

Jun 24, 2008 9:48:11
NO - someone seems to have gotten them confused when the 2e Chult supplement came out (it wasn't very good).

They have the same spelling, and I postulated here (and I think at CK) that at some point in the past a group of Tabaxi Warrriors from Katashaka (since that is where they are originally from) were kidnapped and 'augmented' by Rakshasa for their own nefarious purposes. This group escaped (long story) into the jungles, and have been growing and spreading to other parts of Toril, but they still go by their original name - The Tabaxi. Hence, we have the two groups of Tabaxi who have the same name because of a connection between them thousands of years old.

IIRC, Brian James (FR's official historian) seemed rather fond of that take on them.

Do you prefer it when it just regenerates more damage than you can credibly do, requires you to sink it a hundred points into negative and requires a wish to just die? 4E can on occasion be truly elegant in simplicity (and other times it can be just simple . . .)

-I never found the Tarrasque a "push over". My DM had us all create Level 20 characters, just to face it. Grassland plains, everyone fully prepared, all that. There was a Dwarven Fighter 20, a Human Wizard 15/Incantrix 5, an Elven Wizard 15/Archmage 5, a Human Cleric 20, and a Human Barbarian 20.

-My Elven Wizard/Archmage was totally ineffective, due to it's mirror carapace. I cast a Sunburst spell on it, which the DM had reflected back, causing damage to not only half the part, but blinding 3 our of the 5 of us (my character, the Barbarian and the fighter).

However, it might be a good idea to add in a rule in such a case - if two Terrasques occupy the same world, they will immediately seek one another out and attempt to destroy the other - the first one reduced to zero HP when there are two present will NOT sink into the earth; it is gone for good (unless re-animated as an undead).

Maybe this is how Athas got an Undead one in the first place.

The world that loses it's Terrasque should then 'grow' a new one in the bowels of the earth, in 1d10 years. A world should always have it's Terraque, unless some sort of Uber-godly intervention is keeping it so.
