Yes obviously thats true. What I am asking for is there any lore reference to organized worship? known temples, important orders, notable figures of the past that i can use to tie my character to Cormyr besides just making it up.
I believe you would need to pour over the old maps to look for temples because I don't remember them being mentioned, but I could be wrong. In other words, even if it is not a top religion I would not be surprised for there to be a temple in a map of Suzail. (Were any such maps published?)
Although I won't explicitly say there isn't, I can't think of any such lore.
However, there would be thousands in the military service of Cormyr. Tempus is the deity of warriors. Inevitably, many will worship him and most will probably give lip service. So, I don'tt think you would be making anything up unless you were wanting to write a long background listing those who inspired your character to follow Tempus and the names and stories of the temple said character trained and worshipped at.

You and your DM can always make it up. You can talk with him, ask him if there's a church to Tempus in whatever city in his FR, create orders and past historical figures as needed to flesh out your PC's background.
