| #1lord_karsusJul 29, 2008 17:40:46 | -I picked up Shield of Weeping Ghosts, despite some misgivings about the perceived quality of many of the stand-alone novels of late. I was pleasantly surprised, and picked up Sentinelspire, which I enjoyed even more. Are the two previous books in the series, Neversfall and Obsidian Ridge of equal "quality"? What are the basic plotlines for those two? I have the day completely off tomorrow, and I need to go to the bookstore, so... |
| #2necromaton_dupJul 29, 2008 17:59:40 | Neversfall and Obsidian Ridge are both worth the read imo, the ones you already have are probably the better of the four though...again, imo. Neversfall is your basic garrison gone missing, troops sent to check out the situation, calamity ensues kind of thing. Obsidian Ridge is more of the classic evil mage wants the princess and must be stopped kind of thing. |
| #3lord_karsusJul 29, 2008 21:21:00 | -Hmm...Calamity is always good. |
| #4markustay63Jul 30, 2008 15:07:26 | I picked-up Neversfall in the bookstore, but didn't buy it (I had other more important purchases to make). However, I did take a look at the map (big surprise there. :D ), so I could place it on mine - does this look correct to you guys who have the book - Veldorn Region Is that about right? Bare in mind that Brean and Rastaal are both homebrew - Rastaal to try and fix a descrepency between the 2e and 3e maps, and Brean, just because a 'crossroads' town SHOULD be there (near an adventure-site, naturally). |
| #5lord_karsusJul 30, 2008 15:16:20 | -Very helpful... :P -Some stuff has come up, so I don't know when the next time I'll make it over to a bookstore, so... |
| #6sfdragonJul 31, 2008 0:52:52 | shining south somewhere. anyway i read neversfall, was good |
| #7zananJul 31, 2008 8:45:02 | Read Obsidian Ridge and it has not much to do with a Citadel as such and is, quite strange a novel for the Realms. Yes, the "Ridge" is there and a threat, but nothing that takes centre stage. Halfway through, you have already identified about half a dozen stereotypes (primarily non-FR) of fantasy novel-writing, nothing really surprises you and you get the feeling that nothing could ever happen to the main protagonists. Shield of the Weeping Ghosts ... neat Rashemar story and nice bits of info on the Narfell / Ilythiiri background. Way too much psycho-battling and ghost-pratting by the main people though and for the sake of Lolth, I can't tell you how much I dislike the "male wizard being the one and only do it all and save the world" - chap in a modern day fantasy novel. Elminster, Khelben, Gromph, Pharaun, that chap from the Last Mythal series, Q'arlynd ... you name them. ![]() ... That's why I enjoyed Knights of Myth Drannor II even more! |

| #9markustay63Jul 31, 2008 11:06:45 | Obsidian Ridge is the movie Krull re-written (barely) for FR - hence the stereotypes. I will probably read it, though, because Erlkazar is one of my 'pet areas' that I love so much. Same with Neversfall - it occurs in a region I have great interest in, so to me, it's a must-read. I always say how I don't read FR novels for their quality, and this just proves my point. ![]() |
| #10lord_karsusJul 31, 2008 11:10:21 | I always say how I don't read FR novels for their quality, and this just proves my point. -Yes, yes. We all know we don't read these novels for the literary prowess and lessons learned. We read them for the Realmslore. |
| #11rinonalyrna_fathomlinJul 31, 2008 11:31:24 | Sorry, LK, haven't finished Neversfall yet. Haven't had much of a desire to read FR books lately (I don't think I need to say why). |
| #12lord_karsusJul 31, 2008 11:58:02 | -Hmm...I just don't want to pick it up, not like it, and then be angry. |
| #13rinonalyrna_fathomlinJul 31, 2008 11:59:47 | -Hmm...I just don't want to pick it up, not like it, and then be angry. Well, no one can predict whether or not you'll like the book. You won't know unless you read it for yourself. ![]() |
| #14lord_karsusAug 03, 2008 22:40:20 | Well, no one can predict whether or not you'll like the book. You won't know unless you read it for yourself. -As always, you're right...A lot of you people have a good feel for my tastes, and stuff, though. |
| #15sfdragonAug 03, 2008 23:17:21 | -Good to know. okay from a bit of memory, so I may be off..... mercenary guard of some city in the shining south, is ordered to meet up with army personal of neighboring city to travel to the citadel of Neversfall. there is some betraying, some murder, some treason, some twists, some dont kill the protagonist order. at the end, lesser of two evils of selling antagonist army to this one group, just to have the bad guy general killed, and the other bd guy arrested, and the two protagonist having council about what to do about the shipment, and deciding to defend it against both cities until the end. bet Waukeen was shaking her head at this business deal. But I'm sure Hoar was laughing his arse off at it.... some days it just doesnt pay to be a mercenary out of Chondath.... |
| #16markustay63Aug 03, 2008 23:21:57 | I'm quoting myself, because people seem to have missed this -I picked-up Neversfall in the bookstore, but didn't buy it (I had other more important purchases to make). However, I did take a look at the map (big surprise there. :D ), so I could place it on mine - does this look correct to you guys who have the book - Well? sfdragon? Does that match the map in the book pretty much? (the placement of Neversfall, not the oher stuff). |
| #17lord_karsusAug 03, 2008 23:26:26 | -Hmm...Neversfall sounds a bit interesting. Might as well pick it up, I guess. I have no more books to read right now. I would have gotten it a while back, but stupid stitches. It's horrible, not having any books that I haven't read handy, for a bunch of days. I read too much...![]() |
| #18sfdragonAug 04, 2008 2:45:29 | I'm quoting myself, because people seem to have missed this - pretty much yes sir, matches it right up |
| #19markustay63Aug 04, 2008 12:46:54 | Thanks. ![]() |
| #20lord_karsusAug 06, 2008 0:55:05 | -I went to the book store, but they didn't have Neversfall. Only Obsidian Ridge. -I did pick up The Orc King, though, now that it's finally in paperback. |
| #21merrikcaleAug 06, 2008 10:16:57 | I found Neversfall to be pretty good but short of great. It does take place in a underused area and covers the Maquar with some detail. The 2 main characters were good and well developed. Decent action and interesting mysteries early on, but the way they were resolved was a bit disappointing to me. I would try it though |
| #22markustay63Aug 06, 2008 10:26:31 | Sounds like a lot of FR novels of late - great storyline, but it fails to deliver in the end. |
| #23merrikcaleAug 06, 2008 11:11:47 | Sounds like a lot of FR novels of late - great storyline, but it fails to deliver in the end. sounds like my sex life too |
| #24markustay63Aug 06, 2008 13:22:18 | sounds like my sex life too ![]() I wish mine were even that interesting. Then again... NOT. |
| #25lord_karsusAug 06, 2008 14:04:58 | -That...was...different... |
| #26merrikcaleAug 06, 2008 14:27:12 | FR novels come out every couple of months or so too, the similiarities are staggering |
| #27markustay63Aug 06, 2008 14:34:22 | A little over three years for me... But my right arm is getting HUGE! ![]() |
| #28lord_karsusAug 06, 2008 14:36:43 | ![]() -Let's stop talking about this now. ![]() |
| #29markustay63Aug 06, 2008 14:40:02 | What? I've been working-out a lot since my divorce, just to keep busy. My left arm is getting equally huge... Why? What were you guys thinking? ![]() |
| #30merrikcaleAug 06, 2008 14:52:24 | What? I've been working-out a lot since my divorce, just to keep busy. Thats what I thought you meant |
| #31markustay63Aug 06, 2008 15:01:32 | Thats because you and I are DECENT people. LK needs to get his mind out of the gutter. :D |
| #32sfdragonAug 06, 2008 15:09:18 | Forums wars II: attack of the smilies :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :hoppingma ![]() :fight!: :fight!: ![]() edit: what made you think his mind was there in the gutter??? anyway before LK gets back we should get back on topic....... the ultimate spoiler: the villain gets it in the end |
| #33merrikcaleAug 06, 2008 15:12:39 | Thats because you and I are DECENT people. I am? |
| #34lord_karsusAug 06, 2008 15:25:28 | -I said what I said because it was not on-topic for this thread. So there. :P |
| #35rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 06, 2008 17:51:51 | -I did pick up The Orc King, though, now that it's finally in paperback. You're in for a real TREAT! ![]() |
| #36lord_karsusAug 06, 2008 23:21:08 | You're in for a real TREAT! -I'm sure. I can't wait for that "philosopher". -I like the Orc names, at least. Nukkels...Gna...There's some classics in there. |
| #37markustay63Aug 09, 2008 13:40:34 | Bring plenty of tissues... I wonder if Drizzt can duel-wield Kleenex? ![]() |
| #38lord_karsusAug 09, 2008 14:01:37 | -Tissues? What? An unexpected plot-twist? |
| #39markustay63Aug 09, 2008 14:04:11 | No, no... for Drizzt... now that he has lost all his friends, he's probably crying more then ever.. "Oh, woe is me..." Tell me if you like it - you and I have similar views when it comes to the novels. |
| #40lord_karsusAug 09, 2008 14:13:16 | -Oh, oh. In the Prologue and Epilogue, you mean. Gotcha. -Well, so far, it's something to read, which is better than nothing to read. I'm only about 100 pages into it, so... |
| #41rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 11, 2008 11:49:36 | "Oh, woe is me..." Oh yes, the 100 year jump definitely didn't make Drizzt less of a navel-gazer. |
| #42lord_karsusAug 11, 2008 12:58:06 | Oh yes, the 100 year jump definitely didn't make Drizzt less of a navel-gazer. -Eh, he'd still be in the prime of his life. An Elf less than 200 years old. He's still up to it, and in the "brave new world", I'm sure there's navels to gaze at. |
| #43merrikcaleAug 12, 2008 21:40:19 | why are we gazing at navels? |
| #44lord_karsusAug 12, 2008 22:17:49 | -Because, on certain people, they look good? |
| #45markustay63Aug 12, 2008 22:55:25 | Never much cared for them myself - I think people should get plastic surgery and have them removed. |
| #46merrikcaleAug 13, 2008 9:11:59 | -Because, on certain people, they look good? ah |
| #47lord_karsusAug 13, 2008 11:45:26 | -Well, in any case, in The Orc King, I was just introduced to Doofus the Amazing Orc Philosopher. |
| #48TheriseAug 13, 2008 11:46:30 | -Well, in any case, in The Orc King, I was just introduced to Doofus the Amazing Orc Philosopher. The orc counterpart to Cordio Muffinhead? ;) |
| #49lord_karsusAug 13, 2008 11:58:27 | -I don't know much about Cordio's upbringing and intelligence, but, suffice to say, I don't think he's a philosopher. |
| #50elsenrailAug 13, 2008 13:16:46 | "Shield of Weeping Ghosts"? I was positively suprised too.!I recommend "Sentinelspire". I liked it even more. Good series IMO. Keep reading. |
| #51lord_karsusAug 13, 2008 13:28:41 | -Sentinelspire was certainly the best of the series. |
| #52merrikcaleAug 13, 2008 20:57:33 | -Sentinelspire was certainly the best of the series. It was excellent. I'm just beginning Shield myself and haven't read Obsidian Ridge either |
| #53sfdragonAug 13, 2008 22:16:59 | -Sentinelspire was certainly the best of the series. really, then if you dont mind, explain its plot to me. |
| #54merrikcaleAug 13, 2008 22:33:25 | really, then if you dont mind, explain its plot to me. assassins attack druid and Masters of Yuirwood. Masters win. Assassins come back. Mayhem ensues. No one is who you think they are but the characters are interesting |
| #55sfdragonAug 13, 2008 22:53:58 | and the Malarite symbol mentioned in the end of the book?? |
| #56lord_karsusAug 13, 2008 23:13:46 | really, then if you dont mind, explain its plot to me. -A good plot, good characters, unexpected twists, character development, Realmslore... |
| #57rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 14, 2008 14:28:22 | -Well, in any case, in The Orc King, I was just introduced to Doofus the Amazing Orc Philosopher. *snicker* ![]() I just have trouble taking that part of the book seriously. |
| #58merrikcaleAug 14, 2008 14:40:44 | and the Malarite symbol mentioned in the end of the book?? one of the main characters is a Malarite. he has a lot more depth to his character than you initially give him credit for, especially considering that he's a malarite. Most authors who write about devout followers of an evil god make them one-dimensional. Not here |
| #59lord_karsusAug 14, 2008 15:54:29 | I just have trouble taking that part of the book seriously. -I am having trouble taking a lot more seriously. I actually skip all of Drizzt's soliloquies now. I never used to do that. one of the main characters is a Malarite. he has a lot more depth to his character than you initially give him credit for, especially considering that he's a malarite. Most authors who write about devout followers of an evil god make them one-dimensional. Not here -No, certainly not. I was figuring he'd be a stereotypical brute kind of character, but he certainly wasn't, and that was surprising in a good way. |
| #60bonzaiAug 14, 2008 17:21:09 | I just finished Sentinel Spire this weekend, and I have to say that I really liked it as well. With the old realms coming to an end, I have been trying to read some of the last novels taking place in the old setting. As an added bonus, it put to rest on of the nagging questions I had... what had the Old Man of the Mountain been up to since the death of Bhaal? As I said, I enjoyed it. |
| #61lord_karsusAug 14, 2008 17:32:27 | -It was very good. |
| #62merrikcaleAug 15, 2008 21:50:13 | That what I was saying |
