The Forgotten Realms Batman?

So of the many books out there (and I've read a fair few of them), is there one in the whole scramble of the ForgottenRealms library that centers around such a man as this? A noble of a city, perhaps waterdeep or luskan? who by day throws away money in a youthful and wasteful manner, yet by night uses his skill with a blade and wit (or magic and wit) to protect those who can not?

I'm sure there is, it's is after all, a big world (metophoricly speaking).

-Tazi, from the Sembia books, is a bit like that. She does the thievery bit for fun and personal gain, though.

I read her bit in the first part of the Sembia book series, but not her book. I'd agree with the assesment though. It's not hard to find books about young noblemen, or young noblemen who like to become heros. I'm just finding it hard to find one with the secret life of a hero.

Many thanks Lord, I'll read her break away book as well.

-While I don't know which one of the Sembia books talk about her dabbling with thievery and everything, she was the "starting pitcher" in the novel Crimson Gold. Personal opinion: Crimson Gold was perhaps the suckiest Forgotten Realms book I've ever read. Seriously.

Yes. They are few and far between but out there. I'm proud to say I own two of them. I'll do some digging; If I find anything I'll post it here for other curious board members.

For my money your looking for Danilo Than. He's a a real moner and shakker with the harpers but most of Waterdeep only knows him as a play boy bard with a rich family and a powerful uncle who gets him out of trouble (Kelben)

-You know, Danillo does sound a lot like Batman. Or Ironman. I like Marvel better, so he's Ironman.

Khelben has the 'persona' down, but Azoun IV was Cormyr's 'Batman' in his youth.

He even had a group of 'super friends'. :D

Yup - all the Avariels have been retconned into attorneys in 4e. :D

Which I suppose makes them sharks, which means they 'fly' underwater now.

-I don't think Avariel are even going to be mentioned in 4e. Rich Baker has already replied to Merrik, saying that he was fairly sure that Lythari weren't going to be getting any mentions, and since Avariel are just as obscure as Lythari...

I love those. They always make me think of Lockheed, that mini-dragon in X-men that Kitty (Shadowcat) brought back from their space travels.

Elfshadow, Elfsong, etc. Other Elaine Cunningham novels mention him in passing. Waterdeep has vigilate crimefighting organizations (see the City of Splendors sourcebook)

Khelben is kinda like Batman, with spells instead of gadgets. He'll always act for the greater good, but he's not unwilling to make sacrifices or to cross the line, so long as the final result benefits the majority.

Here's a few of Steven Schend's more memorable "Khelben is/as Batman" references that should help along this discussion:-

"Khelben as Batman/"darker hero" to Elminster as Superman/approachable "lighter hero" is one parallel I've always had in mind since 1990 when I first got the chance to work with Khelben (and Ed)."

And:-

"RE: Khelben as The Operative--not quite. If you really need to know who's in mind when I think about Khelben's plans et al, think The Batman (especially re: his having contingencies about enemies and friends alike, never wholly trusting people, etc.)."

Also:-

"Another analogy I've used before that might help is Khelben as the Batman, being arrogant and smart and paranoid enough to want to work behind everyone's backs and he only truly trusts those he's personally trained/recruited to do his work, even when it seems he works against his own outside allies."

And finally:-

"Just remember that when I think of the Chosen, they're the Justice League/Magnificent Seven (er, Nine) of the Realms and Khelben's most definitely Batman--ruthless, scheming, paranoid, and plotting at all times."

Is it really the best idea to associate the Chosen of Mystra with "superheroes", though? People who dislike these characters like to complain that they are too much like "superheroes" who steal thunder from the PCs. "Chosen of Mystra as Justice League" is usually an analogy made in a negative sense.

But as you've pointed out the comperison has already been made. It's just a matter of time before names are put with faces... DuDiduDU!! Now we know there secret Identidies... That might be a problem.

Just a follow up though.. Who's the joker? There are a few people that can stand out in the mind, but the best comperison via action I believe falls with the Gods. Bane and or Cyric could take that cake, but neither really have the signiture humor that is always tagged along with the joker. If that hafling god (starts with a B..) was a little more sinister he could fill it out nicely, but alas he is not. Give me some crazy guy with no real schemes in life, give me the guy that just wants to.. ah, hm.. how do I put this-

"Watch the world burn."? yes that seems fairly spot on.

I guess my final vote would be Jarlaxe but in the end he just looks to far into the future. The Joker is so impulsive.

Jarlaxle as the Riddler - only mildly insane, and likes to keep 'em guessing. :D

Cyric definately as the Joker - good call. I even picture him making his cronies wear that cheesy makeup.

maybe the Harlequin class can be made into 4e's Cyric Speciality Priests. :D

No, your correct, but as the connection has already been made we are not saying anything new. So as the bad blood is still there, we're not adding to the batch.. I hope.

-Right. But, in and of itself, it's lending...credence- for a lack of better terms- to those misconceived notions.

-For example: For people who believe that Barry Bonds did not, in his career, use illegal steroids, to use the nickname "Barroids" when talking about him, would not help their cause, and sway non-believers.
