| #1Marcus_MajarraJan 14, 2008 13:47:25 | In the light of the recent Countdown to the Realms article, many have voiced their opinions on the changes to the setting for the coming 4th Edition. These opinions are diverse, and it's a good thing that they are. Now, while I recognize that each opinion is just as valid, regardless of whether it's positive or negative, I would like this thread to focus on the positive. I'm hoping to consolidate all the good ideas into this single thread, in order to help those who plan on playing in the new Realms, given the information we've been granted so far. If all you have to contribute is a negative opinion, I would kindly ask you to refrain from posting in this thread, as I would like to keep it as cohesive as possible. What I recommend be posted here are: 1. Campaign arc ideas 2. Adventure ideas 3. Sources of political/economic intrigue to explore 4. Character ideas (player or non-player) 5. New perspectives on old locales and how they can provide a rich gaming experience I thank you for your participation. |
| #2heavensagentJan 14, 2008 15:28:27 | The dragonborn and the nation of Mulhorand hold a lot of potential as a conflict. Obviously we need to know more before we can determine how the two factions will interact (we still don't even have confirmation that Mulhorand survived), but prior to the spellplague the military forces of Mulhorand were overwhelming resistance in Unther, and gaining territory at a somewhat rapid pace. Now that a new aggressive, expansionist force has arrived, it will be interesting to see if they play nice or butt heads. On a side note, I'm really interested to see if the oldest continually inhabited city in Faerun still stands. Did Skuld survive the spellplague, or did the walls finally fall after over 35 centuries? |
| #3rauricJan 14, 2008 15:40:00 | A campaign based in Cormyr where you can play a Cold War Style game. The enemy is Nethril, but they act through puppets in the Stonelands and Sembia. There are going to be new NPCs created for the regions I figure. Most will be low to mid-level I feel. If Shadowdale is still run by the Zhent I will be pleased. Especially if the Zhents are no longer silly super-villains and just a nation that is trying to expand using any means necessary. |
| #4alkasynJan 15, 2008 16:14:02 | I think that seeing how Mulhorand deals with the Dragoborn would be a neat thing. I mean, they did conquer Unther, only to have a bunch of reptilemen appear from nowhere This ought to lead to something interesting. |
| #5rauricJan 15, 2008 20:03:38 | I think that seeing how Mulhorand deals with the Dragoborn would be a neat thing. | #6heavensagentJan 15, 2008 20:43:08 | Well set won't be happt now that he is the chief god and he has to deal with dragonmen, possibly under Tiamats influence. Wait, the cult of Set took over? I knew I was out of touch with recent FR changes, but I didn't realize it was to such an extent; when did this happen? |
| #7the_ubbergeekJan 15, 2008 20:48:59 | Obviously, Tiamat must have a link with those weird dragonic men.... maybe that spell strange fate for this mercenary land - Tchazar? |
| #8aardwolfJan 15, 2008 22:29:29 | I intend to allow my players to truly utilize power of faerun in this time of calamity to carve out there own holdings and participate in the devastation of the world....as saviors or destroyers is up to them:D |
| #9OleOneEyeJan 16, 2008 0:25:08 | Imperial Amn. A hundred years of plundering Maztican riches has stuffed Amnish coffers. Humanoid troubles are a distant memory. Natural merchants, they both despise the decrease in trade that has occurred over the past hundred years and fear that it could get worse. The only option is to bring the world under a unified banner, the Amnish banner. With wealth that other lands could only dream about, Amn can afford the mercenaries. Already, the Moonshaes are being brought under control. The mad patch-work quilt that is Baldur's Gate seethes with disunity and malcontent - a perfect brew to make Faerun's largest city ripe for conquest. The cities of the Western Heartlands would be unassailable were they to present a unified front, but individually they can be picked off at leisure. Cormyr is far too stretched thin in its struggles against the Netheril Empire and Sembia to offer much support of the Heartlands. The big challenge is mighty Tethyr. Can Amn neutralize the threat to its southern flank, or will its old neighbor dash Amn's dreams of empire? Will the PCs lead Amn's march toward conquest? Or will they work furiously to unite the Western Heartlands in common defense? |
| #10the_ubbergeekJan 16, 2008 0:33:17 | Ohhhh, I like that one. :D |
| #11ilthorinJan 16, 2008 9:26:01 | Actually, happily, this mess isn't going to effect my campaigns at all. I picked a small remote place in the realms that has pretty much remained undefined beyond a one paragraph write up in the 3rd ed. hardcover (there was a small online article a year or two ago but we just ignored it). The only thing I have to worry about is the killing off of too many gods. Which frankly i don't get. To me less gods, means less options for the DM, which is never a good thing in my opinion. Other then that i can incorporate a few rumors of catastrophe from distant lands. I even get to ignore the new Saurials.. i mean Draenei.. Dragonborn! sorry. It's kind of nice being able to chuckle from the sidelines.. But i do feel bad for those whose campaigns have been crapped upon. |
| #12Mr_MiscellanyJan 22, 2008 22:07:03 | I'd suggest placing the new 4.0 adventure H1 Keep on the Shadowfell in or near Cormyr's border with Sembia/The Empire of Netheril. It seems like there will be many, many places along northern and eastern borders of Cormyr where a DM could slip in a Shadow Rift, Winterhaven and a nearby ruined keep. |
| #13xhereticxJan 25, 2008 20:54:05 | Hmm, a campaign involving a secret alliance between New Netheril and Shou Lung...I was thinking due to the recent growth of the number of Shou towns in Faerun, you can do something insidious with that idea;) |
| #14Mr_MiscellanyFeb 02, 2008 13:57:10 | I would like to build a 4E Forgotten Realms campaign around the idea that nations and city states that suffered in the Spellplague will become jealous of other peoples and places that were left unscathed, by virtue of the other’s access to mythals and spellwards. I think it makes sense for the great mages and leaders of Faerûn to discover soon after the Spellplague that it was magical wards (and not necessarily the will of the gods) that kept places like Evermeet, Waterdeep, Silverymoon, Shade (and possibly even Cormyr) from much harm. Thus, I would think city-states like Zhentil Keep and Westgate would double their efforts to steal away any lore or knowledge about Mythals and the like, at whatever cost. After all, just because the Spellplague happened once does not mean it couldn’t happen again on one scale or another. There is also the issue of jealousy and pride, as those places that were protected might be seen as ‘better’ (read: better leadership and more powerful) than those that were not. The prosperous realms may also draw survivors and population away from those places that suffered, further reducing the power and influence of the later. -M. |
| #15synthapseFeb 02, 2008 14:46:11 | I like the idea of a revamped church of Selune. With Mystra gone, I could see followers of the Moon Maiden taking their fight to the followers of Shar with renewed vigor, especially since Shar no longer has control over the Shadow Weave. Their fight is supposedly the original god-war, and I think it'd be good to put ut front and center again. Perhaps Selune's followers, afraid of what Shar has wrought, are a little more sinister in putting down Sharrans wherever they are found. |
| #16Mr_MiscellanyMay 18, 2008 3:44:17 | Bump |
| #17rauricMay 18, 2008 6:05:25 | Bump Aye, you rez the thread but how about rezzing your activity around these boards? ;) It seems like FRs one theme will be how magic is more feared than it was in the past. It is interesting since 100 years before that if you were were a caster you probably rueled something or controled someone who did. Now you may be hiding from the rulers. |
| #18lord_karsusMay 19, 2008 0:35:15 | Bump -You know, ironically enough, I was talking about you today. Are you like a Chosen, perhaps? Mention your name, and you hear the next seven words or so... |
| #19Mr_MiscellanyMay 20, 2008 1:51:37 | Yeah....just use "that guy" instead of my SN when you're going to say something mean about me. Sometimes I can't cut the chatter off in time and what I hear makes me sad. ![]() ![]() ;) Just kidding. I like the attention actually. :P So I'm totally digging H1 and can't wait for H2. My players already want to pursue a semi-alternate timeline where they get to make characters that are descendents and/or some kind of follower/adherent characters that were trained or came from places built by their original 3E characters 100 years ago in the Realms. I'm starting to get lots of good ideas on how to encorporate H1 and H2 (see recent post in my H1 thread) into the 'future' Realms. My players are split on whether to wait for the 4E books to be released (only really need the PHB to get going since H1 is like 70-80 pages long and has all the stats/encounters built in with rules on how to run it --no need for a 4E DMG just yet) or to keep playing now with the pregenerated characters that come with H1. |
| #20krownhunter07Aug 08, 2008 12:46:46 | Seeing a need, I've made this thread in hopes of creating a place on the FR part of these boards where people who enjoy the Realms, and the direction 4e is taking them, can talk, discuss and share their positive views of what we've seen, would like to see and general ideas/thoughts/comments along these lines. If you feel discontent or severely dislike FR 4e, please avoid this thread, it isn't meant for you and I ask that you kindly not post off-topic (unpleasant) things regarding the new direction of the Realms. So, again, I say welcome and lets get our 4gotten Realms (positive) talk on! |
| #21barthalasAug 08, 2008 12:51:18 | Thanks... If it can stay on target, this should be an enjoyable thread. |
| #22lord_karsusAug 08, 2008 12:57:27 | -Such a thread already exists, HERE. Continue discussion there, and I'll have the two threads merged. |
| #23krownhunter07Aug 08, 2008 13:26:31 | -Such a thread already exists, HERE. Continue discussion there, and I'll have the two threads merged. Hmm, I didn't see that before... Edit; A side note, it isn't exactly the same thing. This thread is open to all ideas and thoughts on 4e FR. The thread you linked asks for specific ideas covering; What I recommend be posted here are: This is a more general and open thread then the one linked. I'd ask if you would not have them merged, thank you. |
| #24krownhunter07Aug 08, 2008 13:42:20 | I (finally) get to play a RL FR 4e game this weekend. We'll be doing the H1 and up using the info from D&DI to incorporate it in the Realms... I can't wait... well, I have to, but still. |
| #25red_wizardAug 08, 2008 14:05:22 | I am not looking to make any negative comments, and would be happy to contribute to this thread in time. However, as it stands we don't have enough information to draw any definitive conclusions as to whether or not, and how much we (dis)like the 4e Realms. Much of the complaints at the present come from a downgrade in all areas of the Realms. Quality of Maps, Quality of Lore, Loss of major areas, and loss of gods all being a good basis to note. When the FRCG is released, we'll better be able to understand and take sides in regards to the level of enjoyment to be found there. As it stands now, what little information we have, and the diagrams to go by, bespeak a drastically downplayed world. Ignoring entirely personal taste for lore, and going soley by a point by point comparrison of existing material vs material to be presented. -RW |
| #26krownhunter07Aug 08, 2008 14:25:22 | See, I think of it as getting a little of the whole pie. We haven't seen that much, but what we have seen (to me) has been interesting and it (to me) brings back a sense of wonder about the Realms. Comparing what we know of the Realms (old and new) is doomed to fail because we don't know that much. This is more to discuss what we do know and go from there. Happy gaming, regardless. |
| #27el_shawnoAug 08, 2008 14:46:59 | I think a campaign featuring renegade bands of Red Wizards (Red Ronins?) could be interesting. Some could be magical mercenaries, selling their services to the highest bidders (*cough* Amn *cough*), some could be plotting to infiltrate Thay to regain their primacy, some could be looking to carve out a remote bit of territory for themselves. The list goes on and on. In other words, they could be tailored to fit any NPC need a DM may have. |
| #28rinonalyrna_fathomlinAug 08, 2008 14:49:16 | I rather liked the article about Gontal. I wouldn't use Gontal in the Realms (most likely) and there probably could have been more "meat" to it, but I could tell Ed had a hand in writing it. By the way, I'm surprised you're using the term "4gotten Realms", after all the arguing about how negative/disdainful that term is. |
| #29the_ubbergeekAug 08, 2008 15:06:00 | The 'thayan diaspora' will be an interesting factor.... |
| #30krownhunter07Aug 08, 2008 15:07:39 | I rather liked the article about Gontal. I wouldn't use Gontal in the Realms (most likely) and there probably could have been more "meat" to it, but I could tell Ed had a hand in writing it. lol, I had heard about it being used in a negative way and thought I'd turn it on it's head to be used in a positive sense. And I agree that the new fluff we see can be useful outside of the Realms. I think that is a major selling point they're trying to get across to people now, that just because it is for a particular setting, it doesn't mean it can't be Incorporated into your own. (I know this has been true for most editions, but they seem to be actively encouraging it now, IMHO) |

| #32red_wizardAug 08, 2008 15:14:34 | My comments were meant to illustrate how we can compare. The feeling of something new, which I was looking forward to as well, doesn't outweigh that which we have been shown. Things like the "Headless Zhent", and the quality of maps has in all regards decreased, with the sole exception of the map with the cormyr update. So until the FRCG is released, and things are elaborated on, I don't think we can make a fair comparrison, without being biased by past or current dislikes. -RW |
| #3318DELTAAug 08, 2008 15:22:47 | By the way, I'm surprised you're using the term "4gotten Realms", after all the arguing about how negative/disdainful that term is. I noticed it to. The OP may want to change the thread title. ;) 18DELTA ![]() |
| #34krownhunter07Aug 08, 2008 15:26:01 | Yeah.. I'm not really interested in comparing the quality of the maps and fluff, so much as talking about the things we like, ideas for what we've been shown and would enjoy using/playing and/or DM'ing in our games. I agree, however, that the Cormyr map was awesome. |
| #35BelorinAug 08, 2008 15:29:42 | I have to say that the map quality, aside from the Cormyr map, is not up to standards, which is a shame as they will be in the book and part of what the new Realms will be judged by. Anti-4E realms antagonists already have enough perceived things to complain about without giving them something real. Other than that I like the bare bones feel of the settings, it harkens back to the original gray box set. This way you can flavor the new lore as you want and also import any old lore you want to include. Bel |
| #36krownhunter07Aug 08, 2008 15:54:29 | Hopefully, with the added benefit of D&DI, more detailed and inspiring maps will be available in short order... |
| #37GreenKnightAug 08, 2008 15:55:56 | I like Torm. And pie. Not necessarily in that order. |
| #38markustay63Aug 08, 2008 21:29:41 | Hmm, a campaign involving a secret alliance between New Netheril and Shou Lung...I was thinking due to the recent growth of the number of Shou towns in Faerun, you can do something insidious with that idea;) GhotR canon: At the end of 3e, an emissary travels from T'u Lung to Mulhorand, for whatever reason. Extrapolation: Mulhorand has ancient 'bad blood' with the Imaskari, and Shou Lung is technically an Imaskar survivor state, so.... I can see Mulhorand and T'u Lung planning a huge two-prong assault on Shou Lung, which would change the east quite a bit in 4e. Maybe I'll be able to have my 3e Kara-Tur netbook finished by the time 5e rolls around. :embarrass |
| #39SoulCatcher78Aug 08, 2008 22:14:44 | I've started a Rogue based PBP game in Westgate (using names and places from the Thieve's World setting. So far it's going well (more credit to the players IMO). Running a game in the Realms (esp at low levels) depends more on the flavor you as the DM adds (IMO) than on any book. I'm looking forward to the "clearing of the decks" when it comes to the setting but I am miffed at the quality (use that term loosely) of the maps. I'm looking forward to the Harpers becoming a secret organization again (different areas might have a different focus i.e. Dalelands Harpers vs Zhents). Wonder if we can get WotC to let the gentleman who did the Cormyr map or Markustay redo them for web distribution? That'd be a nice touch. |
| #40markustay63Aug 09, 2008 1:39:35 | The Cormyr map was lovely. Which edition of Thieves World you using? I have all the old, original stuff. I never read any of the later novels (after everything changed), and when I bought the 3e Thieves World sourcbook I was very dissapointed that it was set in the post-Ranke world. The setting/city does make for an EXCELLENT Westgate. ![]() |
| #41SoulCatcher78Aug 09, 2008 7:59:04 | The 1st set of material (and the first 4 books?) is the best IMHO. The Green Ronin stuff is better edited but it lacks the "old school" feel of the first set. All I can say is "thank god for .pdf" as my original copy was tattered and raggedy the lst time I saw it. There's a great name reference for the series here if you're stuck for an NPC name. |
