As you know, this forum has already seen a Realms Orc thread, and the Monster forum has seen a goblin and kobold thread...

Drow are my favorite race, and so I made this thread. On this thread, you can discuss the drow in the Realms and, in addition, post any home-made drow content, such as drow NPCs or drow enemies.

This thread will accept content from both 4e and 3.5:D

Fine. Seeing as no one is posting stuff about drow, I will have to start.

I am not so good at making custom material, so I will start a Realms Drow Discussion.

The death of Eilistraee. Am I the only one upset about this? And I personally believe the Vhaerun should still be alive. Anyone agree with me?

No... Since I live in Germany it is hard for me to find Forgotten Realms books... last one I read was the Hunter's Blades Trilogy...

Although I do know that Vhaerun was absorbed by Eli from my Grand History of the Realms book... I just didn't know that survived through the spell plague.

You beat me to it.

But I agree. I liked the idea of the Masked lady a great deal. I was annoyed to see the idea so short lived. While I knew what had to happen, a part of me hoped Eilistraee would win the game, and become in turn a reformed Lolth.

Granted her rebirth was not long ago, but the running trend is to establish something, and destroy it immediately for sales.

Isn't Halistra in the book Insurecction?

By the way, I was mistakened, the last Realms book I read was Insurecction and I am looking for somewhere to buy the remaining books in the War of the Spider Queen series.

I am glad they did not go that route. There's only so much nonsense I can take before I throw it all down and walk away.

It's one thing to establish a character, and kill it right away. It's another entirely to give a character a shot at something, establish them failing and becoming subservient in the manner we saw, and then rewriting them into the spot of power.

In this matter anyway. On smaller scales I admit it can work. Hallistra was lost in more ways than one, so her as lolth would have been bland to say the least.

-Amazon.com, or eBay are probably your best bets, if local bookstores don't have them.

-My reasoning at the time was that Halistra would fufill her role with Eilistraee to kill Lolth, being as that she hated Lolth, and Dannifae. And then, of course, being a Drow, she would then claim the role herself, bringing Lolth back, and screwing Eilistraee.

Taken individually I probably enjoyed them (couldn't tell you, now), but as a series I feel it failed.

Show
On the one hand Pharaun risks his life for a complete stranger (Danifae), and on the other he lets his friend (Ryld) die without caring.

And through the entire series they build his character up to something kind of cool, and then kill him almost as an afterthought - I felt like the final author left him alive by accident, and hastily scribbled-in the last few paragraphs just so the novel/series could end as planned.

If you're going to have a MAIN character die like that, you should go back to writing obituaries for a local town newspaper.

You could of put that in a sblock, you know. Not all of us have finished the series

Ahem ... what? Check out amazon.de, type Forgotten Realms and you get all that there is. In no-time. Or, if that pleases you more, check for ISBN numbers on amazon and try the bookseller of your choice. Due to the current exchange rates, FR books are quite "cheap", and you don't even have to pay P&P.

Unless, of course, you read them in German.

so I have been getting my books from amazon.co.uk,

Hö? Why would someone buy in the UK with their stupid BPs? Like the other germans said, amazon.de is the best source for novels and most other things from the USA. Actually I got 3 novels for the price of one german book last week, thanks the Euro. Theres no reason to spend extra money to get things shipped from this small island northwest of us.

About Eili, well I never liked her much, but I don't dislike her. She was unimportant, too much like Lolth, only a bit whitewashed. Reminds me a bit like Artemis, the vrigin- and huntinggodess of the ancient Greeks. Nothing I would pray to. What I really do not like is the easy way how Smedman let all the gods die. It was sometimes disgusting, too easy and at certain points of the story I've known what would happen, so it started to be boring.

Enough of this talk of other nations! Lets get back to something real, like the Drow. :P

Although I've come to grips with - and even in many cases like - the divine down-sizing of the Realms, it is the loss of the Drow Pantheon that stings the most.

I've already given my feelings about Eilistraee - hopefully Selune will pick-up her followers in 4e - but Vhaeraun is another one that hits home. I had high hopes that they would just roll him into Mask in 4e (saying Mask was really always an alias of Vhaeraun's) rather then out-right kill him, but that novel series really screwed the pooch for many of us.

Since they had plans on 're-assigning' many of FR's gods as others in disguise, I don't see why they couldn't have done this with Vhaeraun as well. I know I could simply say that many of the god's followers switched to Mask during the Spellplague, but thats just not the same thing. Where I found Vhaeraun interesting, I find Mask *meh* - just another shadowy thief-god, who walks in Shar's shadow (who doesn't, these days?)

Anyhow, I'll be keeping him alive in my games, because I think this (and Eilistraee) was one of the biggest mistakes made by WotC for 4e.

Maybe it was the plan to get it "easier" and make drow simple evil and singleminded spiderkissers of Lolth. Besides, what gods worship drow in Eberron? If they are only lolthies favorites there, then maybe that was the reason, so that newbies could understand and switch between the two sets without learning new ways. Or they should become the way how they were originally described in the famous and godselling RSA novels with Drizzt. Were there some other drow who were not the usual spiderloving *****es and their slave males in this series?

All part of the plan to bring 4E back to the D&D 1E, when drow were indeed just bloodthirsty, Lolth-loving creatures out there to gain XP from. More or less the same throughout Greyhawk and very much on the cards since the new Drow of the Underdark. Suum cuique.

Chapien If you don't mind going third party, there are "Plot & Poison" (Green Ronin)and "The Complete Book of the Drow" (Goodman Games), both 3x material and both heavily used in my campaign. "Plot & Poison" introduced my other favorite race, the Drey. The Drey are to the Drow what the barbarians were to Rome, and a Drey female could leave a Drow male longing for the tender mercies of an irate Matron Mother.

I don't think either publisher is going along with the GSL, so I'm crafting the Drey for 4e. I've made some sweeping changes to drow society in my game as well as creating a seperate world where Matron Mothers are known as "baronesses" and the whole thing is based off the Old West. I wrote the part I had about the Baronesses elsewhere on this site... ah, here it is:
Drow Baroness
Surface dwelling drow females, often exiles from their Underdark homes, have secured moderate tracts of land, often through use of their merchant skills (what drow house doesn't have their fingers in trade?). The land thus purchased, often through an agent to reduce the shock of dealing with the drow, will occupy large streches of wilderness where the Baronesses amass wealth through legitimate trade, such as the cattle or sheep industry, roadways (created and maintained, pay a small fee and your caravan won't be attacked by brigands running around loose*), or any other number of things. The Baronesses call their holdings "ranches", and each maintains a stable of "ranch males" who are generally not allowed to leave the ranch. They do the heavy lifting around the ranch, are often exiles themselves with no place to go. Cattledrives are led by females (often a younger daughter and other lesser females) with males as their underlings. Aside from the brand they receive, males suffer practically no physical abuse. A Baroness's daughters and other female relatives, and a handful of favored males, will live in the big house while the rest of the ranch males will live in bunkhouses.

The daughters work the ranch as regulators (regulating the theft of livestock from the ranch, qv. "Young Guns"), and the eldest serves as the interface between an established ranch and the rest of the world they have to do business with. Without Lloth's favor, they do not carry snake whips, but they do carry whips and each female is required to be proficient with it. Bolos are also present. Firearms are in my game, and the females carry pistols and something akin to a bowie knife. Males, when they are allowed to go to town, go unarmed and never go unescorted. (A crafty male can hide a dagger, a sling, or a bolo somewhere on his person.)

The Baronesses themselves form an informal corporation with Nepthas (sp?) contracts keeping them from turning on each other without good cause. Rules for "hostile takeovers" are clearly spelled out, and should a contract be broken, the Baroness and her three eldest daughters suffer the consequences. It is hoped that the new Baroness will learn by example.

The goals of the Baronesses varies from corporation to corporation. Some seek only to maintain their livelihoods and amass wealth while others seek to get into a position of power and secure larger and larger chunks of land to call their own, building armies and whatnot as they go.

*I'll give you one guess as to who ensures that the uncontrolled, no-fee roads are replete with brigands...

It's just a germ of an idea, with other bits falling as they make sense to the whole theme (Coal Dragons with dual breath attacks, flame AND black soot, gnomish railroads, dwarven miners, a half-orc dance-hall girl ...). I've based it only slightly off of the Old West of Hollywood and more on the Old West of historical fact, so it's very gritty, right down to the rumble of the wagon wheels. We've played it in bits and pieces, and the PCs hate dealing with the Baronesses, but they're the ones with the money and they own damn near everything in town soooooo...

(The Baronesses were inspired by the illustration of Wee Jas in Deities & Demigods. I just pictured that face as a drow telling the adventurers that more head of cattle are missing from her land and her daughters are apparently incompetent buffoons who couldn't catch a lame hen if it was tied to a fencepost and had a sleep spell cast on it. Find what's cutting into her profits and destroy it.)

@Shiftkitty - where were you when I was running my FR/Old West campaign?

I turned the clock forward a hundred years, used the Red Steel maps to represent Anchorome, and used some of the gun rules and flavor stuff from the Deadlands setting - including Ghostrock to power to steam engines. :D

Dwarves ran my Railroad, though (from the novel Iron Dragons); Gnomes instead ran the Royal Airship Company (which no-one trusted).

We could have had so much fun together.

Love the idea of te Drey, BTW - I think I might marry that to a similar plot. in Blade 3 we have Wesley Snipes allying with the vampires because there is something even worse then them - a new form of vampire-mutation that feeds on other vampires. Now I'm picturing a small group of Drow Vampires having their own community and slowly growing (MY Drey), and then systematically going after the other Drow to take them over one city at a time.

In that scenario, you'd have desperate Drow trying to ally with anyone they could, even surface races, just to survive.

The only problem I have with that is would Drow even mind being Vampires? I could see Lolth minding A LOT, but would the Drow themselves care? Its just one more way to achieve greater power.

In fact, I've often wondered why all the Drow didn't just become Vamps on purpose.

I wouldn't call them the superior heirs to Rome, though they did eventually play a significant role in it's demise.

The demise was the failure of the romans and their culture. The socalled barbarians assimilated roman lifestile and adopted their complete infrastructure, military strength (they even commanded the armies of rome in the eastern and western part of the empire for centuries), technology and livestile. It was the problem of the roman political structure which caused its downfall. The barbarian invasion was only a symptom. Rom failed in the late republic to create a system that was more than a city state with a lot of conquered terrain. Even under the emperors it took 2 centuries until one of them decided that every one living in the empire should be a roman citizen and so gain part in the leading political structures. But then it was too late and the political class was even more foreign with the needs of the people in the provincies and so they often let them do what they wanted and caused them to fall of or try to get their own emperors of their province. Ursurpers and complete countries falling of the mainbody was the result und rom could do nothing. They needed the barbarians to hold a little bit control and so they gave them the keys to the empire and made them the heirs. What followed then was much bigger than a city state, it was a the creation of a whole nation with one countyside and citizens under the leadership of one and part of a united culture, a complete new idea, nothing romans would have thinked of, because Rome was always the city Rome and then the rest. Until the end of the Roman Empire you had to be in Rome itself to elect the mainparts of the leading class of the empire. Rome was not able to react for the good of the provincies swift and fast, if there was need, because some enemy stood there at the door. So the provinces elected their leaders and that caused bloody civil wars, which brought even more chaos than some barbarians could have done.

You havn't really shown how they were superior. They acted like any animal and exploited a weakness. They assimilated that which they understood, and had the benifet of inside help to do so.

That doesn't make them superior, it makes them oppertunistic and lucky.

BTW, Green updated the Plot & Poison (3E) races in a *web-enhancement to 3,5E. There is also an add-on to P&P called Dezzavold, which essentially is an adventure leaning heavily on the drey and fully 3,5E.

Do note that they start with racial HD and a total ECL of +3 (male) and +4 (female). Which is important for PCs only, of course.

MarkusTay- Augh! I needed that! I would have loved working an Old West game with you!

Zanan- Ah, how could I forget Dezzavold? It played such a major part in what I did to the drow, although it's still whispered that Kane was a fool to have trusted Gromph with his city for even a moment (political dealings in my game). I thought that the 3.5 version of P&P was a hard copy? (Mine is 3, got it used off of Amazon. I never fully upgraded to 3.5, so I didn't look too hard.)

Lord Karsus- I've wondered that myself, but haven't looked too deeply into it. I suppose I could write them.

Ya... That title I thought was "un-drowy".

By the way, I have come up with a new word:

Drowy: To act like a drow, to perform a drowish act.

And another one:

Drowish: Something a drow would do.

I'm fairly certain the new setting is populated by thousands of Drizzt Clones, making Drizzt FR's version of Jango Fett.

The only non-Drizzt being left in existance is some crazy old man who lives in Shadowdale, performing puppet shows for children. :P

-Drow Druids...You know, there's not many of them. Underdark Drow Druids...

#1) It means caring about something other then yourself, and #2) It means putting your beliefs in nature ahead of your beliefs in Lolth.

Either will get you killed in Drow society, and both are just a death warrant.

Strangely, I can see Drow Druids being readily excepted by most other Underdark societies, except, perhaps, the Illithids - but they'd probably just ignore them...

-LG Albino Dwarves.

-Caring about? Eh, not particularly. You can harness the power, and not particularly care about it. Likewise, you can harness the power, but focus on a particular niche that is more in tune with a Drow's thinking. Like Blightlords, who focus on the rotting/dying part.

Strangely, I can see Drow Druids being readily excepted by most other Underdark societies, except, perhaps, the Illithids - but they'd probably just ignore them...

-Yes, that's why I said what I said. There aren't many Druids in the Underdark, period, but it'd probably be a good place for a druid.

Of course there should be drow druids of Lolth. I mean, what more do you need than spiders to warrant somesuch. Some of the "Nature" deities listed in the FRCS and F&P have nothing at all to do with Nature.
There are actually drow druids in the CotSQ web enhancement (where a patron deity is not offered, of course). And, of course, druids need not always to be of the "caring ilk".

Ok, new question.

With the dynamic shift of Cleric might falling on Lolth's table will the drow empire become more theolgicaly chocked off, giving even more power than ever to practicing Priestess of Lolth? or will the ever present squeeze presented by this new found one way road cause people to look in different more desperate and dangerous areas for control?

Such as Shar..?

Or if it becomes to insufferable will the wizards step up..? all very intresting.

And if Shar does become a big hit with the antielves it presents another crossroads as Shar has no outward feelings about males practicing Clerical magic. Does this mean the first practioners that find Shar (whom will most likely be female) will withhold this information, staying on the centuries old path of a sexually split society or will the use this as an advantage over the unisex seeing Lolthoites?

Not to mention if these ideas coupled. If the wizards started fraternizing with the Shadow Weave.. power is the greatest currency and to a drow loyalty is a cheap thing to buy. With the power Shar can give them it isn't a question of which wizard they will bring over to their side, but just how long it takes to do it.

Just the thoughts that run through the idle mind of a forgotten realms junkie.

-No, of course not. Again, the Blight Lords.

-And, a Drow Druid Cabal would also be handy for foodstuff and construction, in the Underdark.

Such as Shar..?

-Shar indeed has been courting the Drow, and vice-versa. There was Zezztra Alhaelhand (Sp?) in Ched Nesad, leading a secret cult of Shar. There is also the Cult of the She-Spider, I believed it was called, that attempted to link the worship of Shar and Lolth. That one didn't work out too good, though, since neither Shar or Lolth took kindly to it.

-Drow Druids...You know, there's not many of them. Underdark Drow Druids...

Yes, but they can be quite ok at it. In fact, there is actually a pretty flavorful PrC for them in the Underdark - the Vermin Keeper. Lloth being the Spider Queen and all, a drow druid(ess?) with a spider companion is quite conceivable.

I think drow are rather hedonistic, so the rough lifestyle of a druid might not suit them, but apart from that why not? The typical drow cares about power more than anything else, and a druid can be very powerful in the Underdark realms. Themes such as the strong preying on the weak and making the rules (the law of the jungle) are already quite familiar to most drow.

-Exactly. I bet the Drow would enjoy being able to literally turn into a spider, and hunt their prey.

-You know, I think I am going to use this in my own campaign. A small group of Drow Druids who live just outside of a specific Drow city, and "hunt" in Spider-Form.
