Definitely a must-buy, even if it is set in 4E.

Maybe the clouds are breaking, and there is a small sliver of sunlight piercing these dark Realms.

*heart skips a beat*

I'm very glad to see word of this novel. I'm looking forward to reading about Azariah, especially given that tidbit about how she really is her father's daughter. Elaith is one of my favorite characters, so I don't expect his daughter will disappoint.

No worries--the prelude offers a glimpse at the growing magical storm, but it doesn't go into detail about what happens to Evermeet during the Spellplague.

Well I think we would  all love to know what happenned during the Spellplague.

I was just curious to know if WotC changed it's Spellplague policy.

Guess not, sniff.

But yeah! Evermeet!

Yeah Elaine!

edit: Sooo, do you date weirdo fans?

Ha!  No, but not because I have anything against weird fantasy readers.  I haven't dated ANYONE in decades because I'm a) married and b) older than dirt.  Smile

Well... admittedly, it's most often the noise heard from young girls when they see photos of a sparkly Robert Pattinson.  Or when a youthful Warcraft player wins a roll on a "new purple" rare item.

Heh, as happy as the news of a new Elaine C book makes me, I agree... 2012 is a long time to wait in anticipation.  So you should start working on that time machine, chop chop!

I'm also looking forward to Elaine C's new 2010 novel, the Winter Witch.  It's set in the Pathfinder world, which I know nothing about, but the description sounds awesome... barbarians, spellcasters, a shieldmaiden as a protagonist.

And it comes out this September!  Woot!!!!*

*note:  "woot!" derives from the same fanbase as "Squee!" and means much the same thing, but it's more testosterone-oriented.

ARRGGGHHH!!!!!! This is the Elaine Cunnigham thread!!!! lets talk about her, or speculate on her upcoming novel, The Serpents Daughter!!!

This is not the place to talk about Dr Who!!!!!! I blame myself really, I did mention a time machine.

But any way, yes I do think that the new Dr looks werid, but then again I think they all look weird, except for the first one, cant remember his name to save my life, oh and Tom Baker obviously, although he did look a little weird too, but in a good way.

I wonder if Elaine likes Matt Smith.  Personally, I think his head looks a little too large for the rest of his body.  It reminds me of my own head.  But I kinda like him as the new Doctor.

And speaking of Pathfinder, have you noticed that their artwork usually makes peoples' heads too small?

It makes me worry for Arilyn and Danilo though, it really does. Especially with the extra blurb over at CK.

Digressions and tangents are a fundamental part of the message board experience. If I read a thread that did NOT have them, I would suspect that someone was removing half the posts. Wink

At the risk of seriously diminishing my geek cred, I must admit that I've never watched Dr. Who, and I'm only vaguely aware of what a TARDIS is. But one of the reasons I like blogs and forums is the opportunity to see what other people are reading/watching/playing.  I might not read/watch/play everything I come across, but I have "discovered" several new favorites through online discussions.

It's important to know what sort of things the core readership enjoys.  Knowing the audience is fundamental to any author's success.  I view these tangents as an opportunity to learn more about your interests and opinions.

In short, it's all good.

Heh, we do have our deletions on posts from time to time, when people get a little crazy.  I was just teasing The_Silversword, though... because he's fun to poke.

Not seeing Dr. Who isn't a biggie in my book.  I've been on and off through various doctors since the 70s, when I was really too young to understand exactly how cheesy some of those green rubber aliens were in the Baker era... up through Tennant and his much spiffier digital FX aliens. I skipped a few doctors in between.

And truthfully, it'd take a lot to put a dent in your cred.     What I like best about your novels and stories are the immersion, the ability to identify with protagonists, the complexity/richness of your characters, and the overall believability.  Exploring new areas and regions was the icing on the cake.  Liriel Baenre is still my favorite fantasy character from all the novels I've read, she's that cool.  I'd love to know how her story plays out, *unsubtle begging*

What are some of the things you're currently reading/watching/playing?  I'm always looking for fun new stuff (and I'm really looking forward to your upcoming "Winter Witch" Pathfinder novel this Sept... you just can't go wrong with nordic types and barbarians in a whole new world to play with!).

What do I watch/read/play.....

Recently I read A Murderous Procession, a medieval mystery by Ariana Franklin. Not her best, but still pretty good.  My book group just read Like a Family, a social history of life in a mill town in the early 20th century. (One of our members is an artist who's currently putting together a multi-media history of the local mills.)  For urban fantasy, I've read the latest Harry Dresden novel (by Jim Butcher), the latest Sookie Stackhouse (Charlaine Harris), and Kate Daniels (Ilona Andrews.)  I read Jon Sprunk's debut novel Shadow's Son, a dark fantasy that's likely to appeal to fans of Paul Kemp and Scott Lynch.

I don't watch a lot of TV, but I usually watch House and Lie to Me when the respective networks post episodes online.  I'm more likely to wait until TV series come out on DVD.  This year I discovered Firefly. (Yep, I'm late to the party).  Loved it. Recently we watched the second season of True Blood. I'm not sure I'll watch Season 3.  That show walks the line and usually finds a pretty good balance, but the last two episodes of the maenad story, imo, spilled over into the absurd and illogical. Dexter is impressive. I can't think of another show that does a better job of making each season come together like a carefully crafted novel.

I don't play a lot of games, other than occasional family sessions of Settlers of Cantan, but I'm seriously considering looking for a gaming group to play 4E. And this week I joined the local Y, which has an impressive collection of exercise machinery, including an expresso stationery bike that has an interactive video screen. Most of the screen options are scenic tracks or races, but there's also "Proving Ground," a silly little video game that prompts you to pedal madly around, slaying various dragons. I may give it a try later this week.

Corellon is more likely to join the party, considering he's the god-king of those mischievous elves.

Elaine:  any possibility you can give us a lil' tidbit or two about the Winter Witch?  Or a glimpse at Elaith or his daughter?    I know, they're probably NDA, and hush-hush.

If someone could figure out how to make all MMO games a function of stationery bikes, the general fitness level in the US would rise considerably.

Alternately, we could slay some actual dragons. I suspect that would be a pretty solid workout.

For what it's worth, the books give the pronunciation as 'CORE-eh-lon Lah-RETH-ee-yen'. Don't worry, I have to constantly correct people in my IRL gaming groups.

And nah, Corellon doesn't smite people just for spelling hir name wrong. That's my job. ;) Although you're immune, Elaine, since if I smite you you can't write novels, and that would be bad for everyone.

Although it does amuse me on the internet how many people can't spell Corellon right, but people almost always manage to get, say, Fharlanghn's name spelled right. Or Eilistraee's. Or even Vhaeraun's. (I'd expect to see a bunch of people spelling it Veyron or Vayron, although searching for uses of such would be rather difficult because Veyron is the name of a model of car and Vayron a common misspelling of it.)

There are no "off" topics.  There are new topics, tangentially related topics, and unrelated yet meaningful digressions.  As long as you can connect a topic to the Realms by four degrees of separation, I don't think see any reason for complaint.

Now, Liriel.

Thank you.  I am delighted by your enthusiasm.  And I do think there's a story to be told.  When we last saw Liriel, in the short story "Answered Prayers," (The Best of the Realms Book 3: The Stories of Elaine Cunningham), she had become a cleric of Mystra and, along with Thorn and Sharlarra, a hired problem solver.  So far, so good.  But a few years later, her goddess is murdered, magic runs amok, mages go mad and die horribly, governments fall, chaos reigns.  During times of turmoil and uncertainty, terrified people tend to turn on anyone on the fringes of society.  Assuming Liriel survived all this, the time jump to 4e wouldn't be a problem. She was very young when the Spellplague hit, and her elven pals were not much older.  I suspect that Liriel would have changed significantly in the past event-filled century so any new story would start at a very different place from where we last encountered her.

That said, there are no plans at this time to continue Liriel's story.

Sure, there are stories I'd like to tell.  I recently listed a few of these on a discussion over in the Candlekeep forum, and a "kick-ass elven sisterhood" in on that wish list.  But I really haven't given serious thought to what I might do next, and I haven't discussed future possibilities with the folks at WotC.  Right now I'm focused entirely on Azariah's story.  My goal is to make it not only my best FR book yet, but also the best book I'm capable of writing regardless of setting or edition.  If reader response is positive, editors are happy, and sales are strong....  Well, that'd be a pretty good bridge to cross when/if we get there.

I can buy three copies to sit along the three copies each of Elfshadow, Silver Shadows and Evermeet, and the two copies each of Elfsong, Thornhold and Dream Spheres(Also randomly The Radiant Dragon because the one time I found the last book in that series it was being sold in a set with the other five, which I already had copies of).

And I'd totally buy a S&S omnibus. Especially if Reclamation somehow got finished and slipped in there... Clearly we all need to get together and bribe WotC.

I'm looking forward to reading your characters point of view of the post spellplague Forgotten Realms as well as how you imagine the cultures they encounter.  Remembering how brilliantly you brought the Lythari to life in description and presentation I have no doubt even futher depth will be added to the races and societies of Faerun.

Just found this thread!  I'm so excited to see the great EC tackling the post-Plague FR!  There's so many unfinished threads, that I'm happy to see anything that fills in a century of FR history, or even during the Spellplague itself, just to figure out what happened to 'my' campaign world.  The only bad news is I have to wait until 2012...
