I hope not. It will de-value the shade as a menace and a source of power in the realms. Maybe if it is an paragon path or (better) an epic destiny.
But as a race it wil conflict with the concept that only powerful creatures can become shades (as shown in the monster template that can only be applied to 11+ level creatures).

I hope not.

Sorry to disappoint, but the "January and Beyond" column confirms it.

I actually think that the book doesn't really think about FR shades one bit - the fluff looks generic PoL stuff. So I wouldn't be overly worried about it.

What's wrong with Shadar-kai as a playable race?

I think this is an answer to the people who wanted Shades as a playable race. I thought about the monster template in FRCS but that was too powerful for putting on PCs.

I think shade as a bloodline feat would have been better, with paragon paths and heritage feats for support.

I mean, shade-dom is basically the same as elans in that they both are "created", a template added on to a base race.

But yes, I agree that shadar-kai = shade in terms of player races and similar powers/feats.

And lets not forget the silly vampire class! rly? blegh

I'm a fan of the shadar-kai race, but I'm iffy on the shades. But angelus is probably right; its a points of light book.

I gotta admit, I'm a little torn on how I should feel about yet another dark and mysterious (dare I say evil) PC race running around. Shades can be used for so many different style of play though and I'd hate to pass up the opportunity to delve into their fluff and adapt it to fit my own Realms lore.

As for the Vampire class, I can see why they did it that way. If you want to be a class that's not dependant on your vampiric abilities, there's always the Heritage (or is it bloodline) feats you can pick up. But if a PC doesn't want to go that route, there should be an alternative way of becoming a vampire and progressing fully as one. Not all vampires take on other jobs such as wizardry or being a soldier, but lavish in their lifestyle as a wolf among the sheep, like many vampires we've come to see in the recent tales.

I don't like how they did the vampire... makes it to hard to get it cured.... if it still can be cured.

You mean with the whole ritual Dark Gift of the Undying from the Monster Manual? Well, if a ritual can be devised to create a real vampire, then I don't see why another ritual can be created to undo a vampiric creation. This ritual process might actually kill the character in question, so it's a definite risk.

My attempt at the PC shade -- in my campaign (running for the last 2.5 years, just started the epic tier this week) we ended up merging this with another paragon path, and the character in question is quite interesting... community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758...

Just as a camel is a horse designed by comittee, the shade is a race who's mechanics are designed by a backwards facing moron.

Damn, I can't stop chuckling. Nice.

I'm typically not one to vent or complain in the forums; and that's not even my goal in this case. I'm just going to state a fact : the Shade race is the worst piece of shite we've ever been served (in my opinion). I'm not sure what the hell about it is supposed to be remotely useful. Backward facing moron, indeed.

Our gaming group has a pretty easy time sustaining 3 players, but no more. We've often mused on applying DMG templates (whether PC class templates, or otherwise) to our PCs. We'd almost be playing on superhero mode, for a time. Reality quickly sets in though, and we write up standard characters.

If I ever played an uber-hero character, I think I'd like to play a shade. I have a bit of a thing, I find, for the Shadovar. I just wish they weren't (virtually) all Sharrans.

I got Heroes of Shadow today, and it was pretty lackluster. I believe I'm done buying player-mechanics from WotC until they get this Essentials business out of their system. I'll still gladly buy setting and monster supplements, should they choose to offer such.

The iconic Shade illustration (p121 HoS) looks nothing like the Shades we know. I think it could best be described as a cross between Nightcrawler and Frodo Baggins.

I'd have to look at it again, which I'm sure to do a little later today.

I remember thinking it provided a few decent options for extra teleports per encounter, but that the powers were pretty meh. That's a very quick, bare bones assessment, mind you. It's possible one of the CharOpers has already found a way to make it shine.

I'll take a look later and see if my feelings have changed.
