When I found this I thought I better show all of you. Its the correspondance between the designers concerning the spellplague. The Black Star is the Black Sun... I never pieced that together ><

Furthermore I created this thread to compile all info on the Spellplagues workings. I hope we can get some discussion on its inner proces, date and place the major catastrophies acros Fearun and predict why and where spellplagued storms can occur.

The Inner Proces

Show
The energies contained in the environment of Fearun known as arcane magic flowed in a divinely controlled matrix known as the weave. When this matrix unravelled the magic energies burst free from the construct and started flowing freely through the environment in the form of azure fire. The continued strain on the remaining magic energy caused by the need for magic energy in stationary magic effects could draw forth copious amounts of the blue fire. If this energy comes into contact with living or unliving matter it gets transmogrified in rapid bursts of activity. The effects can vary wildly.

INteresting stuff Suin.

IM not sure what I could possibly add.
I will say that it is known that Mystra is the Weave, and that the Spellplagued areas are areas were the Weave has not completly disentergrated yet, So in a sense Mystra is still around, albeit in a highly diminished state. Also she had much of her life energies wrapped up in her Chosen, so as long as at least one of them survives, a part of Mystra lives on.

Im guessing that Ed's upcoming novel Elminster Must Die will shed some light on the subject. Also, Id be willing to put money on the Srinshee being next in line for being the next Mystra. I was thinking it was Elminster, but after hearing some comments from THO at Candlekeep, my moneys on the Srinshee.

I'm intrigued by this... what did THO say about the Srinshee?  Even if it was just a hint or something implied, that's pretty interesting.

I thought that book had already come out a billion years ago. It's been mentioned for ages.

Also I hope they aren't making anyone "next in line" to be the next Mystra. Then again their current canon is complete swiss cheese and makes no sense, because a god of magic has been absent for 100 years already. If someone could have taken that portfolio they should have by now and I don't see it being accepted by the likes of Shar easily.

I cant remember exactly what was said, and I dont feel like lookin for it at the moment, but it was basicaly along the lines of some one asking if the Srinshee was a Chosen of Mystra, and THO replied yes, and so MUCH more, so yeah thats got me thinking that somethings up there.

I am wondering...is there still a Magstrator (sp?) around.  People picked by Mystra and Azuth to futher magic?

I know! Ive been waiting forever for this one! I believe its due out in August. Ed has a new 6 book deal with WotC, EMD being the first one. As I understand it, he done with the 1st draft of the second one already, no clue what its about though, not sure if hes going to be sticking with Elminster, or perhaps different characters.

And I would guess that someone was next in line to be the new Mystra, ussually these things are set up well before a deity's demise. Mystryl had her replacement already picked out, and Mystra tapped Midnight for the Job, so I believe that Midnight had a back up plan as well. From what I understand Shar has somehow blocked the ascension of a new Mystra. IM thinking though that might change with ED's new novels.

Ive been thinking on this as well. Although Azuth is no longer around to appoint a new one, its possible that perhaps Selune or Corellon (he does have the Arcane Domain after all) might continue that on and pick a Magister. Or perhaps its up to the Magisters to pick their own replacements? Id like to think that there still is a Magister out there somewhere. And Mage Fairs there still better be Mage Fairs goin on!

The Black Star is the Black Sun

OMG! Ok now it makes some sense.

If only Dove shattering the Black Star would make some sense...

I vaguely remember that, whats that from? Wasnt that somebody's dying words or something?

So maybe Dove is destined to kill Cyric?

Page 36-37 of the DM's Soucebook of the Realms (those 1st edition grey books).  Marchayan of Archendale  AKA as the 'Mad Witch' of the Thunder Peaks was find mindless and drooling in her
citadel.  All of her orcs and other( only described as worse) servants were find dead.  Her tower in now a blackened shell.   The Herdsman who found her( and later reported that she died and he burned her) said she repeatly endlessly "Dove! Dove! Smashed the black star...Dove!"
The happened in Ches DR1356 Year of the Worm.

Interestingly enough this was brought up by the designers as the reason for the Spellplague.

Also...this has always peeved me...ahem it was mark by a * .  For those who don't know this means that...I'll quote.

News reports that will NOT ever have follow-up in the published Realms material are marked with a (*).  I really wished they actualy paid attention to these from the get go...and still did them.

Sorry for the rant.  But the facts are straight.

Shar caused Halaster's Madness back in the day, maybe thats why The Simbul is currently bonkers? Speculation on my part but it sure is fun.

Spoiler from the Elminster Must Die sample: El is planning on feeding 9 ghosts to The Simbul to restore 'his lady' to health. It's that or reduce Cormyr to ruin, and rebuild it as bastion for Mages and good...

Shar is one of the few unknowns in the equasion of predicting the future of the Spellplague. Her ability to block the ascension of a new magic diety or regeneration of Mystra/Mystryl has not been explained as far as we're aware.

Good you brought up Halaster, Delta, because I believe it was mentioned afore that Halaster managed to learn a certain (spellplague related?) secret of Shar which led to him scattering his soul in an attempt to prevent it. Any clue how Shar managed to make and keep Halaster bat**** crazy?

Agathra's profesies/ravings involving Dove are perhaps the subject of Ed's coming novel series, if Dove is able to assasinate Cyric in his Supreme Throne, perhaps Mystra'll be able to escape imprisonment from the Donjon of Facets on top of Azuths Staff. But the thing that bugs me is Agathra spoke in the past tense: "Smashed the black star". Hmm... Mayhaps Dove erred when she had the chance to free Mystra earlier, and smashed the donjon of facets on the Staff of Azuth unknowingly ending Mystra's vestige.

To be honest if they hadn't given this deus ex machina to Shar - I realize the irony here incidentally - they would have just given it to Ao. He doesn't seem to do very much these days though, perhaps he's retired to drink tea and ponder the meaning of the universe.

Could Ao make a hat so big he could not wear it?

Downplaying Ao's role led them to choosing Shar I guess. He wasn't implemented fully throughout 2nd and 3rd edition so forgoing to mention him is their new way to fix any Ao related topics/problems.

From what I have heard at candlekeep(THO) Halaster was playing with the Shadow Weave, when he lost his mind. Halaster was restored to sanity by Mystra for trying to free El from hell.

Doesn't Cyric have the Staff with him in the Supreme Throne. Maybe he is talking to the trapped Mystra as we speak...

If Dove does indeed kill Cyric once and for all, and the little pretender deity never comes back, I will not only take back everything bad that I've ever said about 4E but I'll endorse it in my signature.  I'll even champion earthmotes and build a little castle on top of one.  Totally serious.

Got a question...who is Agathra?  I know it was Marchayan of Archendale who orginaly said this.  I am just confused.

See im the exact opposite here, If they do kill Cyric, I will take back all the good things Ive said about 4e Realms. Of course this is the Realms we're talking about and Gods have a habit of not staying dead. And Ive alreadymade up an earthmote, but no castle on it, a temple to Kelemvor and Sehanine, who the priests of the Temple believe to be "hooked up" focusing on Sehanines aspect as the Elven Death Deity. Also put a Spelljammer dock on there, ah but im getting a little off topic here.

Isnt that who took over for Alaundo as the Nosterdamus of the Realms?

Maybe they mean Augathra?  If so, Augathra came long before Alaundo.

The Staff was destroyed in the process.

But speaking of Shar, i believe that she somehow managed to corupt the Weave, perhaps the Shadow Weave wasnt entirely seperate from the Weave but was actually part of it. One of the reasons why Elven High Mages had such a rough time casting their high magics was corruption in the Weave dating back to the fall of Netheril. Most Elves blamed this corruption on Karsus's Folly, but perhaps it was Shar, perhaps Mystra let herself be "killed" in order to cleanse the Weave?

Well as far as I know they havnt done anything with it, of course they was kinda iffy on it even back in 2e, it was set up if you wanted to use it then cool, if you didnt then just ignore it. I havnt heard anything about the Rock of Bral being destroyed or anything, so IM assuming that theres still some Spelljamming going on.

Yeah thats who Iwas thinking of, Thats right he did come before didnt he, I was thinking Alaundo was, he seems more well known so I was thinking he was first, Looks like I flunk Realms History.

Ok my confusion.  As far as I know it was Marchayan of Archendale that said the bit about about Dove breaking things.  I am pretty sure that is the only reference I know to that 'prophesey'( though I did something else with it in my game...of course it was cooler ;) ).

So can somebody site a souce where this was said by someone else?  I remember vaguely that, I think it was Augathra, that somebody gave the 'Shadow' roll of years...pretty much it does not replace the Alaundo one but co-exista with it side by side...almost like dueling prophesies.  If anybody is a Eddings fan you'll know what I am talking about here.

I don't know much about Augathra "the Mad" except that she was an old woman who received visions and developed the long list of year-names that Alaundo later used for all his prophecies.  Augathra was around -420 DR and Alaundo around +75 DR, I think.

Marchayn the "mad witch" that you're talking about, she's the one who said the rambling stuff about Dove and smashing the Black Star.  Pretty sure she was alive during the 1st edition period.

Augathra "the Mad" received 'visions' from Shar at night. That is where the Shadow Roll of Years came from. It's in the Empire of Shade adventure. She became a Sharn IIRC...

I erred. I confused Agathra with Marchayan.

Agathra did some of the prophesies of the Shadow Roll of Years, so she did foretell the Spellplague by naming 1385 the Year of Revelation. But indeed, it was Marchayan who made the quotes on Dove.

In the Year of the Spell Flames, or 1357 the Year of the Prince, did anything suspecious happen? Because the name is ominously familiar with a Year of Blue Fire. Grand History notes on Shandril immolating herself in Spellfire... This might be a clue that Spellfire is linked to the prophecies of a spellplague.

Given the Spellplague's effects on the Planes, is there any word on what happened to Mount Celestia?  If Celestia was compromised, I'm interested in particular in what might have happened to Bhaal's essence, which was locked away there for safekeeping there.  Does anyone know if Mount Celestia was disturbed or damaged by the Spellplague?

(Apologies if this is a noob-ish question.  I've been away from this stuff for many years.  Coming back to it now and finding the dramatic changes wrought by 4th edition to the Realms I knew...)
