| #1ToughluckAug 09, 2014 12:45:12 | Hallo, i have a question/problem about the new story.
Before the question/problem... i think its a good idea to give some background.
I have been playing AD&D 2nd ed. for about 15 years. I play mostly with a private group (my big brother, lille brother and some friends ) We tried to switch to 3rd ed. but found the system to be full of error and lacking for the most part. In the meanwhile, we continued to play 2nd ed. hoping that a better system would come.
With the new 5th edi. i have been reading the rules and it looks good so far. ( im getting my hopes up and preordered Players handbook and Hoard of the dragon queen).
I was telling my big brother about it and he seemed surprisingly impressed by it...right until we read the "The Story So Far".
He has been reading alot of novels and have read all the rule books and whatnot. He was disgusted by the very idea that Cult of the dragon would turn away from undead dragons like the story says.
I tried defending it with " Well we dont know the details yet.. they might have a good reason.. the book isnt out yet.. lets just wait and see" But he was actually angry with the choise of the new story.. He said:
1. First of all... Cult of the dragon would never turn away from their undead ways ( all the leaders and liches and so on ) 2. He could understand if the story was about the dragon Null... that would make sense... but Tiamat... it simply didnt make sense. 3. Tiamat was defeat not long ago as per the book: Draconomicon
I cant remember all the reasons but he wasnt pleased to say atleast... so far that he wouldnt play in a world that made story go so wrong. Another thing he said: Why didnt they just make up a new organisation.. that would have been fine..
I have nothing to defend with.. i was hoping to get some help.. clarification even...
Unless he gets convinced im not sure that we will be switching to 5th ed.
Kind regards

- change the Dragon Cult to the Red Wizards or Netherese/Shades - change Tiamat to another deity
I don't have a major problem with the story. If the players are successful, the Dragon Cult returns to business as usual making dracoliches. I'm not really familiar with Tiamat, but if it helps sell D&D I'm for it I guess. I'm really looking forward to the Campaign Settings books so I can make my own adventures more easily. It would be a shame to skip the whole edition based on disagreements with the first story arch. |

His only complaint with preliminary info released thus far has been that he doesn't think tiamat is really all that important of a deity in FR.
We're going to get the adventure and read through and see if it's worth playing.
That's all each of can really do: give it a shot and see what develops. |

| #8zoroaster99Aug 29, 2014 7:05:17 | I'm happy with Fifth Edition and Hoard of the Dragon Queen so far. I'm the DM for my group. However, I don't want to lose the old dracolich worshipping Cult of the Dragon for the future, so I'm going to run Tyranny of Dragons on the assumption that this is a new expansionistic and charismatic leader who has led the Cult in the north away from their roots, but in other regions of Faerun the are still many cultists who cling to their belief about dracoliches. When the players (hopefully) defeat the effort to bring Tiamat into the world, or defeat Tiamat, then the Cult of the Dragon in the North will suffer a grievious set back that the Cultists in other parts of the continent will seize on to "prove" the true path is to raise up the dracoliches to rule the world. |

You could see even wars between the factions. That's how I'd spin it as a DM (22 years of D&D under my belt with a hiatus when 4E reared it's head) |
