Nov 30, 2009 12:01:07 Um, im not sure if this is the best place for this but here it goes.

My freind is going to be starting up a 4e FR game soon and begun asking for characters. I would really like to play a warforged character. However im not that familiar with the realms, and i dont know their role there.

Where Warforged ever written into Forgotten Realms? and if so then what is their backstory?

Nov 30, 2009 13:03:26 afaik, they never had a write up for them i nany of the books... they were a race precific to eberron, however I think one of the latter monster manuals had a in the realms section back in 3.x.
in 4e, not sure.

Creations of Gondsmen, Constructs of the Metal Mage from Undermountain, Raumathari Battle Constructs from their war against Narfel. (We have had many discussions about this topic around here.)

The Spellplague gave them "Life". Heck even give them a Spellscar if you want.

Is it a 3E, or 4E Realms game?

Nov 30, 2009 17:05:33 It wouldn't even have to be a member of a 'race'. It could be a singular golem created by some wizard to serve as a bodyguard or lab assistant or whatever.

Thayans made quite a few golems, as did the Mulhorandi, though most of them were gem golems as I recall. Really though, just about anyone could make a golem, and interaction with the Spellplague could be used to justify almost anything magical one might wish to, given its ambiguity. It is a rather convenient tool for deus ex plot twists and character justifications.

Dec 02, 2009 15:00:30 MT and Badcatman I believe had a very interesting discussion on this. Based on the lore of an early PC game Blood & Magic they made up a story of a war of two magical races of humans who made/discovered Bloodforges that massproduced sentient golems.

Easiest way is to give him a backstory from Eberron and then have him fall through a portal into the Forgotten Realms. Many portals in the Realms malfunction or do strange things, randomly appear or disappear, and he could arrive this way without any need for a complicated backstory (since Warforged don't have any history of being in FR).

-A la that old D&D adventure, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, replace actual robots in a spaceship with Warforged on a Spelljammer, and there you go- you have Warforged, and a new, "hip" adaptation to that adventure to boot.

Dec 19, 2009 18:40:26 The warforged in my current FR game was picked up on their planar adventures. He's a relic of an ancient war and so I felt it fit the theme well, plus was an easy justification for including the PC into an epic tier campaign story.

-Isn't that the explanation of their origins in Eberron also? 'Machines' (or things close enough to machines) that were created basically to fight in an ancient war that took place on that 'mythical', more mysterious continent...
-I saw the Eberron 3e campaign book on sale at a used book store for like $5. Would it be an interesting pick-up?

Dec 21, 2009 1:16:52 Actually Warforged in Eberron were created towards the end of the Last War (which only ended 2 years before the current time line in Eberron). They were released and their production for warfare stopped at the end of that war with a general accord. They're not ancient, being a reasonably new development in constructs used for warfare - although the actual idea of Warforged may have been taken from Xen'driks giants (who were pretty advanced until they got obliterated by Dragons) as ancient warforged have been found on the continent that pre-date those used in the Last War.

The 3rd edition or 4th edition Eberron books are well picking up. They are actually pretty similar, with the exception that 4E adds some new material in and integrates the 4E races. Personally if you start from scratch the 4E book is marginally better, but the 3E book is mostly the same material and can be bought much cheaper.

Yeah, go on Karsus...you never know. I got the 3e Eberron book for roughly the equivalent price over here.

Dec 22, 2009 21:49:19 It's pretty worth while I find. Best of all it's always the most relevant source of "What Eberron is now" as novels are not canon. If you like that book, the other Eberron 3.5 books are very solid as well and edition neutral (except for NPC mechanics and similar). A lot of people like Eberron books for that reason, because you can buy them for their fluff and then apply it to other systems (Savage Worlds is fairly common).
