Sundering: Re-imagining the Forgotten Realms of Dungeons & Dragons

Three of the Sundering authors (R.A. Salvatore, Ed Greenwood, and Erin M. Evans) will be in Columbus OH for a Thurber House event, taking place August 14.

Crap! Its on a Wednesday!, I'll have to work that day, and im all out of vacation days! Looks like I'll be doing some hooky!

While no video, I did take some notes, and I noticed a few other peoples with cameras out so Im sure someone will post a video somewhere. Basically they focused on the novels, didnt talk much at all about the game side of things, and since Bob's novel is the only Sundering novel out right now discussion was pretty heavy on that one, Although Ed did hint at what hes got planned for El and Storm, theyve had it, theyve got nothing left to give, but they figure before they head off into the sunset they better find replacements, so thats what theyll be doing apparently, finding people who can pick up where they left off and train them, of course that basically puts a giant bullseye on the ones theyve chosen to succeed them, sounds interesting.
They took some questions from the audience, the possibility of an Avengers style team up book was ruled out cause no one likes writing other peoples characters. Ed was asked what edition he uses when he DMs, he gave James Wyatt this look, like I probably shouldnt answer this, but james gave him the go ahead, I expected him to say 1e or maybe 2e, but Ed says "rules,schmules" he doesnt really use rules, they role play and act stuff out, they ussually dont even make any rolls what-so-ever, and if they do need a role Ed will just make something up or maybe use something from one of the older books. All in all pretty entertaining stuff, but no bigtime bombshells or anything, nothing was really mentioned that hasnt already been talked about. Ed really dominated the discussion, no surprise there, Bob talked alot about Drizzt. Erin talked alot about the writing process and outlines and how the finished product is ussually vastly different than what the orginal outline was, like the characters take on a life of their own. Pretty interesting stuff.

The event was recorded by a videographer and I've been told it was sent to WotC ASAP so they can put it up online. It sounds like you missed my reading, which is a shame, because I think it works best when you haven't heard Ed read yet. He picked a really raucous, wild section and read the heck out of it.
Sadly it just makes me really wish they scheduled more of these things in other parts of the world... the UK would be favourite.

Just get as many people to buy my books as possible, so I can convince WotC to at least help me pay for the trip to the UK.
In the meantime, I'm considering when it comes time to post excerpts, it might be fun to do them with videos of the same section being read. Would you guys watch that, or is that a waste of bandwidth?
Out of my band of friends I have already introduced 4 of them to your works, and I have hunting down two more... sadly I think it will take more than that to get WotC to cover your ticket. I shall keep at it though.
As for the excerpts... I have a two hour commute to and from work every day. I can think of few more enjoyable ways to spend it than being read to by one of my favourite authors.
I can't speak for the others but I, for one, would watch it... with a big grin on my face.

Sadly I didn't make it back. I read the last section while away from home and by the time I got back The Captive Flame was well under way and it felt a bit self-serving to displace it from the top spot just so I could post "I love this book!" when it had been so well covered by Mirtek and the others. I hope you didn't take my lack of a follow-up as a sign of loss of interest.
If you like, I am more than happy to go back and reread Lesser Evils just so I can contribute on those last few chapters. It'll give me an excuse to spend time with Fari et al. again and that is no hardship.... might be nice prep for The Adversary too ;). (which I have on pre-order by the way... we are doing it in Book Club, right? Right?)

Ha! No, no worries. Although if you decide to reread and have questions of any sort, you can feel free to bump the thread. It's a pretty cozy forum and the occasional bump doesn't throw much off.

Were you able to find seating even though you were late? Was it packed? How was the venue? Pretty cozy?

Yeah, a team-up book would be pretty kool. And yes we did find seats, but they was way in the back, and yes it was pretty packed, the venue was all right, it was about the size of a good-sized movie theater, and it was in an art museum so we had artsy stuff to look at while waiting to get books signed and stuff.

Sounds good to me. Though I would imagine that quite a few of my lingering questions about Fari and Havi will either be addressed... or cruelly ignored in The Adversary. I will go over my notes though (I made a few during the book club) to see if anything jumps out at me that I can pester you with in the mean time.

You see, this is something I would actually prefer not to see. I have strong memories of Mr Denning's take on Ethena Astorma... and they aren't happy ones. Some characters, I think, can stand being written about by different authors. I am not so sure that Storm is one.
Video from this event is up on D&D's YouTube page. Sadly, it seems to be edited down, and Ed's raucous reading wasn't included (it sounds like maybe they had trouble pickng up his mic? I don't know). But it does include some discussion of the Sundering, the story summits, stories from Ed and Bob, and a reading from THE ADVERSARY.
