While I don't know how long it was I do know that it took place in 1358 and that it didn't last longer than a year. So less than a year perhaps.

-The Time of Troubles happened in 1,358 DR, and lasted only a few tendays (weeks, made of ten days a piece).

what's disappointing that not much happened in the Realms after ToT as a consequence of it, e.g. holy wars, or some other crisis (economic with Waukeen)

there's a lot that was disappointing about the ToT... and other RSEs that don't quite pan out--like the Tuigan Invasion, or the Return of Netheril/Bane/whoever.

which is why, the more I read the new FRCS, the more I appreciate how well it was done.

with Spellplague it wasn't done, it was avoided

-Yup. A Realms of the Time of Troubles short story book would have been super.

i disagree.

i mean... yeah, there's no adventure module or even a really good description of what went on during the Spellplague.

BUT at least it had real consequences. the ToT had extremely few and those that it did have were either minor (some minor deity or other got axed) or were so far away from the core of the setting (Unther's pantheon getting wiped out.... I mean, how cool would it have been to have an adventure module or a book describing how Tiamat and Gilgeam fought it out in the streets?) that things didn't change much. I mean, it was so little change that even though Mystra dies that the new goddess IS ALSO CALLED MYSTRA.

wow. that's inventive. and realms shattering.

the spellplague on the other hand destroyed about a quarter of Faerun, completely rips apart some of the major factions, and dramatically alters the campaign setting's tone, major characters, etc.

There's a detailed chronology of the Avatar Crisis in the print Forgotten Realms Atlas, though it lacks information revealed in the Shadow of the Avatar trilogy and other later sources.

The TOT wasn't about how it would affect Toril. It was about the pantheon. So no Toril didn't have any Realms shattering changes but the pantheon did. How many Gods died ?How many new gods were elvevated? Changes to greater deities in the pantheon is rare a maybe has one Deity involved. But ToT had multiple greater deities dying and new ones taking their place. A significant change indeed. And from reading that trilogy I'm positive ao would not have let anything catastrophic happen to Toril and it's mortal inhabitants as it was for them and the balance that he shook up the pantheon for.

Let's not underestimate the philosophical shock of the gods walking Faerûn. One god doing so is a legendary occurrence; all of them, for tendays on end, was an unheard-of catastrophe, a breaking of the natural order that, cutting priests off from their gods and bringing magical chaos, disrupted what everyone thought they knew about magic and the deities. They felt they were living in a Ragnarok or a hell on earth, which in turn caused social and economic upheavals, even if the sources didn't dwell on them.

The even larger magnitude of the Spellplague and its aftermath is exactly the topping-the-last-one inflation/escalation that both Wizards employees and observers had long predicted as a consequence of the RSE policy.

I know the ToT affected the people of Toril(political upheavals, Economic crashes Magic going haywire wars, fear, etc...) but it wasn't designed to completely change the face of toril. At least IMO it wasnt .

-The face of the planet wasn't really changed. Asides for a few deities dying and a few ascending, the Time of Troubles didn't really impact much else. House Oblodra in Menzoberranzan fell. Meh, not too much else that I can think of.

It was in the year of shadows 1358 DR.

The philosopical shock on fearun is what made it an interesting place to play in. Proof of divinities realness made it such a wonderful place to play a cleric (in a BG2 as a spawn of Bhaal even).

Dude, I would see a whole CENSORED of stuff being affected by the TOT.

Just because we didn't get spoiled by it's RSE after effect in a novel as we do these days doesn't mean the repercussions weren't wide spread or less damaging than what we have seen as of late.

Hell, just look at the mess Cyric has made since his ascension.

TOT not responsible for that?

-Right, that should have happened. As of yet, though, no sourcebooks, novels or short stories have even mentioned such lasting effects. A few random ones are mentioned, like changes in churches, or whatever.

Well, then, let's at least take Waukeen's disappearance into account. That CENSORED up commerce all over the place.

Great idea. We had the Avatars trilogy. Mentioned the fall of House Oblodra. And BG2 (canon book, unfortunately).
But not much more about it. If it was "Ragnarok" or something, it should have had a much greater impact.

TOT was 2e/TSR. They didn't do that.

The TOT did help set off enough sales that Wizards thought that TSR would be a good purchase and commercialize on. Especially with novels/sourcebooks.
