to the Underdark.

for one reason or another, the players in my campaign need to get to the Underdark - the Northdark's Ched Nasaad, specifically. They're currently based out of Loudwater and next session will be attempting to figure out a way to get underground. Naturally, their plucky DM is barely a step ahead of them, as I myself have little idea how to pull this off without seriously derailing the campaign.

I should mention the group is 9th level, and is currently thinking they may be able to find a way down through the Greypeaks or the Star Mounts.

I'd really, really appreciate any and all help in this matter.

Thanks!

Don't go trhough the Star Mounts. A very nasty, very ancient lich makes his home there, plus the underdark is covered by Araumycos. The Greypeaks certainly have connections but they also have beholders. Still they make a clearer root.

There is a portal in Ched Nasad that leads to the surface world. I believe it opens in one of the dessert areas forgot which.

You mean the one they used in WotSQ and ended up in Anauroch? That was blown up along the rest of the city.

Make a portal. Ched Nassad was a city of trade, and I could imagine that there would be at least one portal to the surface realms used for importing exotic surface goods to the drow city, or simply to make raids against the surface elves. Followers of Vhauraun may have created a portal linking Ched Nassad to one of their bases in Cormanthor as well.

i'm looking over what you've all written and i'm getting some ideas...

...how plausable would using a malfunctioning portal left over from the disaster that struck Ched Nasad (I had no idea it was ruined!) to ferry the group off-course, yet nearby in the vast Underdark? It's been mentioned Nasad was a hub of trade and commerce, so perhaps someone in Loudwater or Llorkh would have an idea how to find the other end of the now malfunctioning portal?

Very plausible. There are forgotten portals everywhere, not to mention well-known ones.

-Sure, portals work. Magical teleportation by whomever could also work.

-It'll be interesting to see what become of Faerzress', in the light of everything that is happening, and 4e.

Probably ommited as to not introduce any deviations from the core.

Its already been retconned, I thought.

Isn't it just 'Drow-nip' these days?

-Maybe, maybe not. I sure hope not...Faerzress' could theoretically be introduced everywhere else.

-"Close enough". But, they'll still be around, which is why I said I wonder what'll be done with them.

So, here's the thing I didn't quite get with regard to the Faerzress retcon. (And for a while, early in the story, I had the impression that Faerzress and Araumycos were being used somewhat interchangably, but maybe that was just my initial take on it)... isn't Faerzress supposed to be found throughout the entire Underdark? Upper, middle, and lower? If that's the case, it seems like an awfully large magical effect, even for High Elvish Magic, to have created.

Were the elvish high mages supposed to have created Faerzress, or did they just add the "pull" to it that lured the dhaerrow down to it?

-That's a pittance for the power that Elven High Magic can perform. Remember, this is magic capable of altering the face of the planet, binding deities...

-The Elven High Magi created the Faerzress', and it's entire "point" was to "lure" the Drow into the Underdark, and to keep them down in the Underdark. I also believe that the spell was also what granted the Drow some of their special abilities, like Faerie Fire, and the Spell Resistance.

That's true. The power to retcon is pretty amazing. ;)

Yeah, Faerzress Fire, now. It's just so... odd. Having thought of it as just a natural radiation for so long... and now... =shrug=

It will always be natural radiation in my Realms.
