hey gang,

i've been glossing over the 'return to the temple of elemental evil' and i think it's perfect for my FR campaign. the group's based out of the delimbyr vale, and currently spends their time between loudwater and a ficticious city in the base of the greypeaks - i've populated it with dwarves and gnomes keen on reclaiming ammarindar from 'the depths', kinda making it a perfect adventurer's city.

anyhow, i think it'd be pretty cool to plunk the previously mentioned adventure into my campaign; hommlet would be replaced with this dwarf-reclaimation city, nulb would be an abandoned gnomish ghost-town further up the hills (further beneath the hills?). most monsters could easily be converted over, gnolls become bugbears from the greyvale, the place is rife with dragons and giants anyhow, ogres remain, ect.

however, my problems occur with tharziduun (sp?) and the elemental evil. i'm unsure what to do with this. i was thinking of pretending he was a vanquished abyssal lord, ****** about hellgate keep, trying to claw his way back into the world. bane might sponsor him some power, because he'd be able to rule him later on - that's what a good bane does. and maybe cyric could get involved, because frankly, cyric's not cyric unless he starts **** around with daemons, devils and all things crazy and vile.

not really sure...so this is where the scholars of FR come into play. any and all suggestions will (hopefully) be replied to, as i seriously want to make this work.

p.s. not keen on changing the name, as one of my players LOVEs reading FR - although not a problem, as soon as he hears 'Elemental Evil' he may read through it. he doesn't do this for spoilers, but because he loves the read and is fairly good about this if broached on it ahead of time.

oh, sorry, i should've mentioned the specifics.

we're playing a 3.5 campaign, current year is 1372. i didn't really see a FR board specifically for 3e, so i assumed it'd be ok to post this here, without upsetting the 4e people too much.

NOPE! Consider all of us Pro-4e people offically "Upset"! :P

BTW, did they ever make a conversion of that adventure to 3.5 or do you have to do it manually?

Additionally, if I remember correctly there was a cleric of Lolth/Lloth who was a male human (his name escapes me at the moment) and that doesn't follow canon. Not sure if your worried about that, but as a player, I found it to be sorta stupid.

Anywho, just giving you my two cents.

Ok, that one instance Lloth had a male cleric but he sure as heck wasn't human (something I'm fairly sure she'd never let happen).

OP here, I was just curious if anyone had any ideas about how to go about this. As I said, I'm probably going to plunk elemental evil in the greypeaks, perhaps styling it as one of the fallen, now-overrun colonies of Ammarindar.

What I'm stuck with is who could reasonably take Tharziduun's role as the ultimate evil, as well as how/if the rest of elemental evil should be re-tooled to be less Greyhawk and more Abeir-Toril.

Thanks agian.

Ammarindar is a good start, building up from that to some remote area in the Greypeaks.

What I'm stuck with is who could reasonably take Tharziduun's role as the ultimate evil, as well as how/if the rest of elemental evil should be re-tooled to be less Greyhawk and more Abeir-Toril.

I'd honestly go with either Asmodeus or Ghaunadaur, but I like Ghaunadaur better because one of his titles is the The Elder Eye (close, but not exact).

And it could look something like this:

History as the Locals Know It
Twenty-five years ago, the forces of evil and darkness gathered north and east of Llorkh into the Greypeak mountains and constructed a huge temple. This was a bastion for their armies of gnolls, bugbears, ogres, trolls, and giants--not to mention the evil human masters of the place and the demons (many gathered from near-by Hellgate Keep) and other foul creatures that served them. From this awful place, the malevolent denizens unleashed earthquakes, storms, fires, and floods upon the Silver Marches. The Temple of Elemental Evil took three years to complete, but even in that short time, the forces of good knew that they could not abide such a place. The lands of the Silver Marches and Evereska rallied their forces and sacked the temple twenty-two years ago in a battle called Forgotten Meadows (named for the site of the largest confrontations). Most of the evil forces were destroyed or driven off. The temple itself was greatly damaged, but the underground levels were extensive and dangerous even for those heroic folk. So the Temple of Elemental Evil was sealed with great magic, imprisoning a powerful monster within it's confines.

Nine years later, bandits began troubling the area around Llorkh. Evil humanoids and strangely garbed priests were seen on the road. Within the following year, it became clear that the Temple of Elemental Evil was rising again. This time, the folk of Llorkh and the surrounding area coordinated and fostered attacks by bands of adventurers against the ruined but still-occupied temple. Eventually, the evil was once again overthrown, and this time the temple's dangerous lower levels were destroyed. Since then, the territory has prospered in the peace that has settled in, apparently for a long stay. Common wisdom has it that no more adventures can be had in Llorkh.

True History
Many years ago, the worshipers of Ghaunadaur conceived a bizare plan to promote and reinvigorate the power of their religion. Their agents, as insidious as they were insane, infiltrated the ranks of other evil religions (most notably the clergy of Bane, Cyric, and Shar). By worshiping Ghaunadaur, they even gained a small measure of help from the ranks of nearby drow. Once their agents were in place, they began a campaign of lies, misdirection, and manipulation. Among the drow, they conformed more to the powers and religion of Ghaunadaur and strayed further from their spider goddess. These renegade drow attempted to expand their area of influence to the surface by controlling many tribes of giants and inciting them to attack the near-by communities, but this plan was ultimately foiled.

...ok thats as far as I got. Basically, instead of introducing Zuggtmoy and Iuz, you can just say with Ghaunadaur's love of watching the hunting and devouring activities of large horrible monsters it's the evil cults intent to release the Trassaque upon Faerun. You could changes it's alignment to Chaotic Evil, as you will have to do with the Elementals you find within the temple.

It's not going to be straight Canon, but I think it's a start to making it fit into the FR setting.

ah, a super-thanks to you, ye steep'd of the realms-lore.

ironically, right before i was checking back on this, i discovered this online:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drfe/20080318a

especially this snippet:

"Instead of being an avatar of Tharizdun, Shothragot is the creation of Ghaunadaur, an entity spawned to shatter the worshipers of all other gods and enable the Elder Eye to become master of all things." which was almost enough for me to just transplant their two names/natures. all in all, it's a fantastic idea and i thank you muchly for your help!
