Trying to find a name for this 'event'

Dec 03, 2008 16:19:32 Hi, I have a somewhat strange request. I wasn't sure where to post this, but since we're playing in the realms I ended up here. (Though it's actually the 3.5 realms :P)

Anyways, we're playing a big campaign (the last one with our current characters) and something happened. I won't divert about the how and why because my players don't know exactly what's going on yet and they frequent these boards. Plus it actually doesn't matter to the question. The consequence of what happened is, that currently, in our realms no divinations that deal with the future work anymore. There's no way to look into the future anymore for even a few seconds. Spells like augury, moment of prescience,... no longer work.

My players became aware of this (and of the fact that the day it started coincided with another strange event :D), when one of them passed by an anual magefair in the Dalelands, and overheard lots of mages talking about it.
I regretted then, that I hadn't been able to think of a catchy name for all those scholarly types to label this strangeness. Things like 'the blank future', 'the empty fate', etc

I couldn't think of anything satisfactory, so my question is: can any of you?

Dec 03, 2008 17:32:57 The Silence of Savras if you want to realmsify it a bit... maybe The Veil of Labelas for elves... The Spellblinding perhaps... The Diviner's Doom even. Seem a bit melodramatic to me, but its all that's coming to mind.

The Blinding Of Savras

Silence implies he's not talking or answering prayers, but presumably priests can still cast their other spells. Plus, it's been done with Lolth. Blinding means that the future can't be seen.

Or The Divination Anomaly, if you want to get technical.

That was the very FIRST thing that popped into my head for this thread, but then I thought of the Never-Ending Story and said to myself. "it's been used", and I didn't want to be derivitive.

Hence, my reference to Seers being unable to "pierce the veil" or portents.

I still like "The Nothing" though, and I'm glad someone mentioned it.

Don't care for The Silence of Savras, just because it sounds like The Silence of Lolth. Not that there's anything wrong with it - I just hate redundancy.

Dec 04, 2008 18:35:26 Dont know if it has anything to do with the Shades of Anarauch but The Shadowing or Shadows Veil may be OK.

Shar is the goddess of loss, forgetfulness, unrevealed secrets and some other stuff but it could also be called Shars Darkness. She made the Shadow Weave too.

Strangely enough, I like the feel of 'the nothing' most. It has been noted in my campaign that if people tried to look into the future in a certain way, they stared at a white wall of nothingness. It'd really fit that vision I thinks.
I've got three players in my group and I suspect two of them to be not familiar enough with the neverending story to catch the reference. ;)
So I'll go with the nothing.

We all write stories about what happens during our gaming sessions, as seen through the eyes of our characters. As DM I also write a few interludes now and then, of things happening behind the scenes. Maybe I should write them an interlude about all those wizardly types at the magefair arguing about which term to use. And I could throw in all the ideas that have been coined. (Before I had come to the forum I had also asked my players' help):D

Now I'm very curious who this person is who gave this thread five stars. It's too early to be Santa.

EDIT: Oh yeah, what's with the 'dark and empty' thing in every post? Is it like a reverse signature at the start of each post instead of at the end? :P
