Preface:
I wasn't sure exactly where to place this, so I'm sorry if I chose the wrong forum.

Anyway, the Two Stars mercenary company is a campaign 'piece' that can be added in for a change of pace, a plot hook, or just about any number of ideas.

The leaders and most of its members are unaligned.

If there are any questions (that would actually require enough interest to give a whoot, so I'm not going to fool myself here...) just tack them onto the end.
I will probably use some variants of dirtyfrank's orc thread in 4th ed. races and monsters.

That thread can be found here:

The Two Stars has a remarkably high percentage of Gray Orcs within its membership. The stats for a Gray Orc are as follows:

Gray Orc

Average Height
Average Weight

Ability Scores: +2 wisdom, +2 constituition
Size: Medium
Speed: 7
Vision: Lowlight

Languages: Common, Giant
Skill Bonuses: +2 Endurance, +2 Religion
Saving Throw Bonuses: Hard Headed, +5 racial saving throw bonus versus fear effects
Weapon Proficiencies: Gray Orcs are proficient with all axes
Running Charge: +2 to speed when charging (from MM)
Warrior's Surge: encounter (from MM, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to copy such stuff in, but I did Running charge... I may edit it in later)

The Gray orcs of Faerun have long been a scattered barbaric society with tribes throughout Thar, The Purple Mountains, and the Hordelands. However, with the defeat of the horde, many began moving into Thesk. Thesk is now the center of civilized orcish population in Faerun possibly excepting Dark Arrow Kingdom. (Right name, edit?)

The Gray Orcs have traditionally been a hearty race, known for the leagues they can cover in the hordelands. As a people, this orcish subrace has always held a great reverance for axes. They virtually worship them. Also, since they first entered Faerun, Gray Orcs have been a race of strong faith. Fortunately for many of the Faerunian nations, these orcs have never been able to reach the pinnacle of divine spellcasting power they held upon first entering Faerun.

Physical Qualities (add in later...)
Playing a Gray Orc (add in later)
Gray Orc Adventurers (add in later)

Well, this is just a start. I'll fill it in as I write it...

The Two Stars mercenary company has a fairly uniform hierarchy and composition throughout its bases. The portion of the company at each base is referred to as a Cohort.

First is the command structure:

Command Structure

Cohort Commander

Each base of operations includes a Cohort Commander. The primary function of a Cohort Commander is twofold. The first function is to lead the cohort in battle. The second is to coordinate the other units with respect to each other in addition to those over which the commander has direct control. This second function is mostly non-combat.

Cohort Commander; Level 10 elite soldier (leader) {XP 1000}

Chessenta Cohort

Though relatively solid, the Chessenta Cohort is the weakest of the arms of the Two Stars mercenary company. It lies in the southeast corner of Chessenta and is the second leg of the trade route linking Chessenta to Tymanther. On a fairly regular basis traders from Chessenta will come as far as the orc settlement here to trade with the dragonborn merchants from Tymanther.

The Two Stars has recently began revitalizing this branch and has even hired a dragonborn engineer to redesign the settlement and clean it up. (It currently has poor drainage and little thought given to organized waste disposal, a side effect of years of neglect...) The dragonborn value this site as it is the last protected stop until they reach their Chessentan trade spots. They appear to be willing to pay whatever (within reason of course) taxes may result from the rebuilding.

However, there have been some problems. This rapid growth has resulted in the quickly forming (with many mountain orc soldiers...) and setting to work of centuries, some of which have not been ready or entirely loyal. The cohort is also in a standoff with a particularly large and powerful group of bandits attempting to threaten the trade route.

Tymanther Cohort

The Tymanther Cohort has perhaps the most unique history of all the cohorts. Shortly after Mulhorrand invaded Unther, Coliar traveled to the wartorn land and began organizing hit and run tactics against the Mulhorandi invaders. Her base was in the foothills near the Methmere and from there attacks were based. The Turmic slaves who had escaped the Mulan (both Untheric and Mulhorandi) and joined the Two Stars called her the 'Black Lion' due to her dark hide armor and black mane of hair.

Many Turmic women who were lacking skills useful for supporting a mercenary company fled to the Two Stars to escape their masters and Coliar received them. They were put to work letting the soldiers release their frustrations and coins. However, Coliar paid back her loyal servants by ensuring that they were taught the Art (i.e. arcane art) by some of her battle magi. She promised them, that in the end they would own the power to hold on to their freedom.

However, her success had reached the point that Mulhorrand was ready to launch a seriuos assault against the Two Stars when Tchazzar, the Sceptenar of Cimbar, returned to claim Chessenta as his own. Not wishing to wish confrontation with the Sceptenar, the Mulhorandi sent Glorious Servitors of Anhur (might divine champions of the Mulan War god who were able to take the form of a great lion) to slay her. The hunters became the hunted and she killed them one by one.

Then the spellplague occurred and Tymanther was dropped on Unther. Always quick to react, Coliar made overtures to the dragonborn and worked out contracts to help secure the border of Tymanther and make contact with its neighbors so that it could build allies and trade. Though weary of most gods due to their history with dragons and primordials in abeir, the dragonborn were kind of partial to the idea of following the precepts of a dead god. They also respected Coliar and the Two Stars for their help.

After Coliar left for the Hordelands, the Tymanther Cohort did well under the tutelage of the dragonborn. they gave a solid disciplined background which the Cohort grew and thrived in. Many dragonborn even joined the cohort and it adopted some of their tactics. The dragonborn took well to the Turmic arcanists and taught them more. Now these Turmic women have a small but budding arcane tradition. They still send members to aid the cohort.

Tymanther Cohort Command Structure

Cohort Commander Gravella Gravelsdotr

Gravella Gravelsdotr

Gravella's story

Gravella was born to be a warrior. it has been said that her father, a great traditional warrior named Gravel, so wished to have a great warrior son to pass on his legacy to that he made a deal with fate to make it so. At first, he thought fate had cheated him when his wife gave birth to a daughter, but as a veteran, Gravel knew that when your plans fall apart the only thing left to do is improvise. Gravel then set out to teach his daughter, Gravella, all about war and discipline. She learned remarkably fast and it now appears that Gravel matched fate using his ingenuity and perseverance.
Gravella is a strict disciplinarian and kept the Tymanther cohort of the Two Stars in an excellent state of preparedness even before the return of Coliar. This was aided by the presence of the cohort within the lands of the disciplined dragonborn.

Hordelands Cohort

The Hordelands Cohort controls a large area of land on the northern side of the Lake of Mists. It was formed from the first 5 tribes consolidated by Coliar after her return from the Elemental Chaos. Their efforts have been to secure a swath of land for farming and production.

Around the periphery of this area are spread the Ten Tribes. These were the ten tribes brought under Coliar's control in the years after her initial whirlwind entry back into Toril. If there had been an interest in researching the lore and stories of the Gray Orcs of the Hordelands, some interesting tales would have been spread west during those years. However, there was no one who cared to listen. Now, the Ten Tribes roam and fight, occasionally turning beasts loose on caravans so they can clean up afterwards. They pay tribute to the High Command in wealth as well as live bodies. Also, they occasionally visit Ulzbeg. Their size (about 200 to 400 orcs each) and ferocity north of the lake of Mists has kept most travelers to the Goldenway Traderoute and away from the north shore of the lake.

In just the past year, Coliar made an official approach to the Witches of Rasheman. She made a deal with them for some of her priestesses to study with the witches in exchange for granting some Wychlaran the opportunity to study under Humbaba. Recognizing the value in obtaining the lore of the ancient cyclops, the witches agreed. The two camps have had amicable relations ever since and often trade information.

Coliar, with the aid of her Mistress of Shadows, has been able to spread many agents in the Realms. She has agents in Impiltur, Chessenta, Tymanther, and Thesk, not to mention Lofwyr's agents in Murghom. She has recently been able to place an agent in the small Tuigan Kingdom to the east with which Uruk trades. If nothing else, her unmatchable ability to forge lasting relations with disparate individuals has greatly expanded her power base. Although she greatly wishes to infiltrate Thay and High Imaskar, she does not think it prudent at this time.

High Command of the Two Stars Mercenary Company

Coliar

Coliar journeyed into the Elemental Chaos a few years after the Spell Plague began. There she recovered an artifact of Inanna: Inanna's Great Axe. Although she has yet to awaken it, it still functions as a +5 Holy Avenger Great Axe. (While there for such a long period, she has changed and now is considered an elemental with some air related properties...) She also found and freed both Humbaba and Shulgu while there.

Actually, the Two Stars would be very interested in buying. Historically (IRL), the Church of Inanna made a large share of many by pandering. So, if your Dwarves have coin and are well behaved, they have a standing invitation to get to know the Gray Orc Women in the Church of Inanna.:D

Also, I just added the different 'fields' to the Tymanther Cohort entry as well as the stats for Gravella, the commander of the Tymanther Cohort.

Giver of Life (standard, usable only while bloodied; encounter)
The Battle Priest(ess) regains 16 hitpoints and makes a melee basic attack

Does the priest only gain hit points if he/she hits or is it automatic?

If on hit then you should switch hit points and melee basic attack so that it reads better. If it is automatic then the hitpoint regeneration should be under effects.

The battle priest(ess) makes a melee basic attack.
Effect: The priest(ess) regains 16 hit points.

Bringer of Death (when reduced to zero hitpoints)
The ally makes a melee basic attack

Should be changed to something that look like this.

Bringer of Death (ally within aura is reduced to zero hit points)
The ally makes a melee basic attack.

A few word can sometimes make things incredibly confusing.

R Feel the Rhythm (minor, at will) Charm
Ranged 5; +8 vs will; target takes a -4 penalty to AC (save ends)
The Battle Priest(ess) moves to a rhythm which (s)he forces an enemy to follow, exposing itself to attack

Is this flavor or part of the attack. If it is flavor then I would suggest italicizing it and putting it withing parenthesis.

Bringer of Death and Giver of Life (standard, recharge 5,6) Healing
Ranged 5; one ally within range makes a melee basic attack (as a free action) and regains 15 hitpoints on a hit or 5 hitpoints on a miss.

Ranged 5; one ally within range makes a melee basic attack (as a free action) and gains 15 hitpoints.
Miss: the ally gains 5 hitpoints

this may read a little better if not just look a little bit better.

Other than these small things everything seems to look fine.

Those are some excellent points df. In fact I prefer your descriptions. The sad thing is that I basically copied them from the MM.

Giver of Life:
warrior's surge (standard; usable only while bloodied; encounter
The Eye of Gruumsh makes a melee basic attack and regains 16 hitpoints.

Bringer of Death:
Death Strike (when reduced to 0 hitpoints)
The orc makes a melee basic attack

Bringer of Death and Giver of Life:
Swift Arm of Destruction (standard; recharge 5,6) healing
Ranged 5; one orc within range makes a melee basic attack (as a free action) and regains 15 hitpoints on a hit or 5 hitpoints on a miss.

Sadly, the MM is not well written.

As I said, I like the way you wrote them and I will change it, hopefully sooner
than later.

I noticed that you took them from the MM. The MM does a great job wording some things but a bad job wording others. The way I word stuff came about by looking at most of the powers withing the MM and deciding which way of wording powers I liked best. The orc section may not be the best place to look because they aren't the brightest of creatures. :P

I just thought I would throw out an idea for whatever it is worth.

Plot Hook:

the Two Stars mercenary company has recently been training and adding in more centuries at all four of its bases: Hordelands, Two Stars, Tymanther, and Chessenta.

However, at one location (most likely Chessenta...), one of these new centuries has turned renegade. This has created a twofold problem for the local cohort. First, the cohort cannot divert forces to take care of the situation itself because the cohort is currently involved in a stand-off with another unit somewhere. Second, the loss of the unit itself is a blow to the cohort.

The Master (Mistress) of Shadows has devised a way to solve the problem: Hire an elite band to eliminate the top commanders. (Note: in particular the two Centurions, the Battle Priest, and a human mage 4 who has joined the century.) The quicker the better. The plan hopes that the century will fragment with the loss of these commanders and no longer be a threat to the area or the cohort's reputation. Also, bonuses will be given for minimizing casualties among the century. The cohort hopes that after fragmenting, many soldiers will try to return to their home: the Two Stars mercenary company. That would be in the cohort's best interest since it is currently in an explosive situation.

So, that is the kicker: disable the century by removing its commanders. Naturally, killing more of the soldiers means more XP. However, not killing soldiers will fulfill a secondary part of the quest (with XP) and bring in more gold. The players can choose just how much trouble they wish to go through to get their reward.

The offer would most likely be introduced by a human brutal scoundrel who is an agent of the Master (Mistress) of Shadows. The company's involvement would not be mentioned to the PCs.

Note: I still have to add a little to the command structure: first spears and the quartermaster. Also, the century would consist of 11 mess groups with 8 members each. These would have maybe one or teo legionnaire mess groups with most of the mess groups being drudges. I have not yet finished all the soldier types for a century but I have made a good start. They may also have some brute boars (Dire, etc.) at their disposal.

The breakdown of a century can be found at this post: [post=17309422]The Two Stars Mercenary Company Command and Unit Structure [/post]

The Two Stars mercenary Company

The Two Stars mercenary company has a long and storied history. There are few companies that survive the loss of their founder for any period of time and fewer yet that last over one hundred years.

Not surprisingly, the story of this mercenary company begins in Thesk in one of its most eastern towns: Two Stars. The town was named after the Dawn Heralds, also referred to as the Evening Heralds, which appear only at dusk and dawn. Anadia is not nearly as noticeable as Coliar since it is only seen lower in the sky and closer to the sun, and as a result, Coliar itself is often referred to separately as the East Star and the West Star. But that is enough digressing.

Prior to the spell plague, a female Gray Orc who came to be known only as Coliar came out of the eastern wastelands and into Two Stars. There she began forming a mercenary company which she named after the town it was created in: Two Stars. Even more surprisingly, she began ordaining priestesses of a goddess named Inanna. Strangely enough, this goddess was an Untheric deity who had been killed by the Grey orcs and the Orcish avatars they summoned to do battle with the Untheric pantheon thousands of years prior. For a period, it seemed that the ancient goddess of war and fertility would resew her seed among the very fields of her destruction: the Gray Orcs.

After, Mulhorrand invaded Unther, Coliar left with the greater portion of the Two Stars in order to seek fortune in that war torn land. There the Two Stars had many successful hit and run clashes with the Mulhorandi legions. When the dragon overlord Tchazzar returned to Chessenta, the Two Stars was able to increase its recruiting of orcs who left the region. Of course, many chose to fight on the side of the Sceptenar of Cimbar.

The coming of the Spell Plague changed everything. The Two Stars company was spared destruction at the hands of Tymanther being dropped on it by being just outside the area. Coliar quickly made alliance with the dragonborn and helped secure their borders while helping establish relations with other regions. She also expanded operations into Chessenta in order to secure it. The Chessentans used Two Stars as a go between and buffer against the orc tribes of the region. At that time, all three bases of operation: Chessenta, Tymanther, and Two Stars were well-funded, well-equipped, and important to the stability of their regions.

But then Coliar left Tymanther and passed through Two Stars on her way back into the eastern wastelands. She never returned. For a period, the company continued its proud tradition of excellence. With time its unity dwindled. Although the three bases all kept the name and continued to survive, they ceased to function as a unified company with three theaters of operation. The small church of Inanna all but dwindled away and was for the most part replaced by the church of Tempus within the company. At least one priestess of Inanna has remained in Chessenta and Tymanther at all times as well as a handful within the Two Stars region. Fortunately for the dwindling church of Inanna, the church of Tempus has never really been the jealous type: some are enemies on the field of battle and some are allies on the field of battle. There is little incentive for them to worry about anything else.

However, about ten years ago, things began to change. The size of each base has grown and the training and the organization of each has likewise improved. It also appears that the church of Inanna has seen a resurgence in all three theaters of operation. While this has been occurring over several years it appears that training and tactics are being shared between the bases. It appears the Two Stars mercenary company is on its way to becoming a multi-regional, or perhaps trans-regional, power once again. Who is actually behind this unification is a mystery that is just beginning to draw the attention of some individuals.

It's best to look at the "how to make monsters" section of a book before you start to make monsters. I have generally found that this tends to help. :P

I may be one of those rare (or unfun) people, but I actually read through the entire DMG before I started making my own monsters. I seem to also have been one of the few people that actually read through the PHB before trying to make a character.

Anyways, keep up the good work.

Here are the tentative stats of Coliar, High Commander of the Two Stars Mercenary Company:

Coliar first made herself known in the Unapproachable East as the commander of her mercenary company and the priestess of a lost goddess. It was said by those who had faced her (and been allowed to live...) that she had the best footwork of any soldier to have ever walked on the face of Toril. In battle, her every step was a dance and none could match her. During their conquest of Unther, the Mulhorandi sent numerous Glorious Servitors (great divine warriors...) of their gods to slay her and yet the Black Lion, as the Turmic slave escapees referred to her, always emerged victorious. She ascended to something more than mortal before the spell plague and after her return from the Elemental Chaos has been busy re-establishing the company and spreading the faith. she is also searching for clues to lead her to the Lost Plane of Zigguraxxus where Gilgeam laid Inanna's body to rest after her death in battle. Perhaps she will bring about the rebirth of Inanna in her own person when she finds it. Thte few tales of her deeds in the Elemental Chaos and Feywild that have reached Toril have been shrouded in enough mystery to keep her true power a secret from most.

She is supposed to be a beast in battle, but I do not have a lot of experience making creatures of this caliber. So, I welcome any responses.

Note: There might be a couple (cosmetic) differences between this and the high command post.

You say in Coliar's fluff that she has great foot work in battle. That is is almost like she is dancing while fighting, and that nobody could match her. You could maybe give her the kobold shifty, but instead call it something else. Maybe something dance related. It doesn't seem that big but something that small can be quite powerful. another thought is that you could increase the strength of the ability from 1 square to something like 4 squares or something (since she is quite high in level).

Yeah, I'm going to change a thing or two along those lines.

Stripped some fluff out. Will be redoing some NPCs also.

Added a pic to be Coliar, the commander of the company.
