| #1aitrusJul 01, 2013 11:27:42 | So, I have started a campaign in Undermountain. I am starting with the Return to Undermountain adventure and plan to expand out from there. My grand sceme is to keep the group in Undermountain as long as possible, filling out the levels with any adventure that comes to mind...it is a daunting task to say the least... Anyway...advice and pointers would be appreciated. I am especially interested in any stats on Halastar's apprentices, especially Trobriand, Murial and Arcturia. I would like my PC's to take them on at some point. I already have the basics for each written down. What I am stuck on are the specifics. Stuff that differentiates them from every other evil wizard in Faerun. I.E specific spells, gear and items that set them apart Trobriand: I'm looking to play him kind of like Urza from MTG but more evil. So I'm looking for spells and items that give control over contructs...I was thinking a spell that is a variation of Summon Monster that allows him to make contructs quickly from various parts that are around him. Murial: This one in particular I need ideas...does anyone know where to see how to make an augmented human that has magically transformed himself into a scorpion-centaur? Other than that, has anyone else run a campaign in undermountain? Thoughts? advice? Thanks |

I also remember her having some stats in one of the Undermountain Adventures. Don't forget the Shifting Portals and the Force Cage which can aid the DM when the adventurers wander off into some unprepare corner of your map; these were also the unique stamp that gave the Undermountain it's particular environmental qualities (Horn Ring). There were some articles on here somewhere that once had some nice random room, traps, and trick descriptions during or before the Expedition book came out. Various Time periods have different inhabitats around the Slaver Complex area near Skull Port, there was also the temple to Eilistraee (the Promenade). There are certain events that effected the Undermountain, Halaster Harvestide, Halaster's Lost Level, Moon-Dock Adventure when Halaster was taken captive by alhoons, Halaster also calls all of his Apprentices together to kill them all sometime or another (Halaster wasn't wearing a Donald Trump wig though that might make a great Undermountain joke or cartoon as he says, "you're fired" ). There is the Madness Curse that takes all of their minds at least until they escape, if they do...I remember Thobriand had a strange stiff hunched posture and he was once a Red Wizard. Murial eventually got a new form but it was left vague as he escaped the Undermountain. There was also an adventure where he battles players. It almost seems like a box set had the apprentice stats because I remember using them. I may have to check my box sets and let you know. I've used the Undermountain alot in the past 20 years so much so that the players tend to get stressed out if some gate dumps them out in the Undermountain or if they find out they might have to find something down there. Portals into and out of the Undermountain are important and useful for a DM know and also some of the Famous Locations. There was some crazy long link a guy had at Candlekeep at one time (in the Forums) that linked to his filling out all the maps of the Undermountain. He wasn't finished couple of years ago (maybe 5 or so) (it was almost too much) but made for a great reference if you needed some extra ideas off the cuff . There were some major changes in some of the classic locations after the spellplague which I got from novels and used in some of my 4e games but it felt alot different and I never got that last Undermountain thing so... It never felt the same without Halaster. Even though I believe he was fragmented in his last ritual and might just reassemble himself over time (I used that and he appeared in my games even if it was some spectre of his essence. I actually have everything ever released on the Undermountain except for the last product. So if you are looking for something particular let me know and I will see what I have in the stack. I think I hear Halaster's distant evil laughter and mutterings on my book shelf... I'll also check on the apprentices and let you know. |
| #4aitrusJul 02, 2013 16:57:27 | Stigger: thanks for the tip. The Waterdeep manual has stats for Trobriand but not Murial. But it was still a big help. Andrekan: Thanks for all the help. I have the original Ruins of Undermountain boxset, Expedition to Undermountain, and the 4e Undermountain adventure on pdfs...pretty much if you have any maps that would be great. Also, any idea where to get stats for Murial and Arcturia that would be awesome. And just the names of manuals and moduals that deal with undermountain... Thanks a bunch |
| #518DELTAJul 03, 2013 3:51:44 | IIRC Acturia became a "living spell" (9th lvl Wish). High level wizard/soc that can cast any spell from being a living wish... |
| #6aitrusJul 03, 2013 6:47:57 | According to the Expedition book Jhesiyra Kestellharp became a living wish spell and Arcturia became a worm-that-walks |
| #718DELTAJul 03, 2013 8:17:16 | It's been awhile since I read that book... |
| #8AndrekanJul 04, 2013 10:37:06 | The Ruins of Undermountain II, has a Campaign Guide, in the section on "The Deep Levels". Here is Trobriand's Graveyard Pg 46 and Muiral's Guantlet Pg 69. It list Muiral CE F9/W13 it has his THAC0 12 (9 with his +3 Vorpal Sword) Tail Sting Poison; Special Attack: Control Undead to 300', permanent ESP, Mind Blank so he also has some Psionics, then there is a page and a half on his history.Trobriand NE W18 his THAC0 15 Damage by Spell or Weapon, then there are 2 and a three quarters of a page about his history. It also states through the Magister, an apprentice who broke away, is where Elminster got most of his History on Halaster and some of that history Elminster says "is subject of debate". It never state's her name here. But she is a she as is stated. Maybe that is a good start for you, if you have any questions I have the source material. |
