| #1phelf_der_zemitJun 11, 2009 20:03:20 | I was looking for anybodies thoughts or facts about Faerun vampires in 4e. There seems to be little or no mention of them at all really. I was curious as I was thinking of creating a medium sized adventure using vampires as the main antagonist. A-typical vampire evil but a little more smoke and mirrors in the beginning. I'm not worried about being origanol as Vampires are classicaly down played in the Forgotten Realms genre and even more so in 4e. So can I expect any flavor for FR4E vamps or do I have to take a shot in the dark (Oops! ...what a terriable pun). |
| #2lord_karsusJun 11, 2009 22:46:05 | -As always, nothing says anywhere that Vampires don't exist in Faerûn anymore, so they still do. As for how the 4e rules support making Vampires (if they do at all), and how their 4e stats translate to their 3e stats, I don't know. Noticeable differences, the Spellplague, or one of it's results, are likely to be invoked as the mechanism of change. |
| #3KnoJun 12, 2009 6:11:09 | I don't think the Spellplague changed vampires |
| #4quale1Jun 12, 2009 7:32:10 | I know that in Waterdeep there was one vampire lord that chased off all the other smaller vampires, maybe that's changed now other than that don't know, they don't have organizations and such there is more gothic Erlkazar now, and the Eminence of Araunt |
| #5markustay63Jun 12, 2009 10:02:31 | Actually, Vampires feature prominently in several Realms short-stories, and they are also sprinkled liberally througout FR's history. They great thing about that is that they are there, in the background, but have never featured prominently - that means DMs can do whatever they want with them. Give them some clandestine uber-organization a'la 'the Covens' of the Underworld movies, or have them all fly solo... its up to you how you want to spin them, which is a good thing. I know in the stories revolving around that Elven Vampire (who's name escapes me), there is a group of Vamps operating within the Dales. |
| #6quale1Jun 12, 2009 10:25:29 | Jander Sundstar I forgot about the Night Masks, don't remember if they survived |
| #7lord_karsusJun 12, 2009 11:11:45 | I don't think the Spellplague changed vampires -If there's noticeable differences between how Vampires act, behavior, and what they can do, and can't do, it needs to be explained in-setting somehow. |
| #8markustay63Jun 12, 2009 11:20:12 | Well, if supernatural abilites drew from the Weave (and I really don't think they did... they are more... primal...), then it's an easy fix. However, since I think supernatural abilites draw from other sources (and I'm guessing that Vampiric abilities tap into the Shadowfel), its not as easy as that. Then again, the Shadoweave also fell with the Weave, so if Vampires did indeed draw from the Shadow Weave, now they are going right to the source... which could mean they are even more potent. In fact, they would be VERY MUCH like Ravenloft Vampires now (because Ravenloft got rolled-into the Shadowfel as well). You can assume FR always had a 'watered-down' version of Vampires, and now we have the "real deal". ![]() |
| #9old_sageJun 12, 2009 11:45:59 | Actually, Vampires feature prominently in several Realms short-stories, and they are also sprinkled lberally througout FR's history. I'm thinking of two specifically -- Shyressa of the Twisted Rune and the Night King [the Manshoon clone]. Steven Schend's Empires of the Shining Sea has a little about what the vampires serving the Twisted Rune are like, as well as Shyressa [see the 3e Lords of Darkness entry for the "Twisted Rune" also]. And Master of Chains, by Jess Lebow -- specifically the sections dealing with Shyressa and her cabal of vampires. For sources on the Night King, see the "Westgate" entry in Cloak & Dagger, and the section on the Night Masks in 3e Lords of Darkness. Additionally, I suggest you take a look through the original Lords of Darkness REF5 tome, which also has lore on vampires in the Realms. There's also a couple of vampires among the Moonstars. Of particular note is Asraf yn Malik el Kahaman yi Manshaka, the LE vampire, who has joined with the Moonstars and was a deepcover Harper agent. He's also briefly mentioned in City of Splendors: Waterdeep. Eric Boyd's also shared a few minor tidbits about vampires in the Realms through some of his replies at Candlekeep. Steven Schend has as well, mainly in regard to those LE vampires operating among the Moonstars. I know in the stories revolving around that Elven Vampire (who's name escapes me), there is a group of Vamps operating within the Dales. Jander Sunstar's FR anthology appearances include:- "One Last Drink" from Realms of Valor, "The Quiet Place" from Realms of Magic, and "Blood Sport" from Realms of Infamy. |
| #10phelf_der_zemitJun 12, 2009 13:58:34 | I didn't know of most of those realms vampires, though Manshoons Clone is rather promonent along witht that of the Twisted Runes cabal. Not to mention Tsabrack of the Blood, Master of Necromancy in Sshammath (sp?). I figure he's still around, because as LK points out, with no source siting otherwise that is what we go on. I was really just more curious as to post spellplauge happenings as I am mostly caught up before that. If nothing has differed then I will start in on the simmering idea. I just didn't want to get half way done and be told, "Oh, vampires in 4e Realms can't turn into mist. Didn't you know?". etc, etc. |

| #12nightseerJun 13, 2009 0:11:23 | Dont forget the Haunted Lands Trilogy. IIRC it had some vamps in it. |

With the 4e monster system in general you'd be encouraged to give your vampires whatever particular powers you need or want them to have (e.g., vampire wizard? throw in a wizard power). As for vampires in 4e FR...they actually just seem very vampirey. They're just here and there sneaking, infiltrating, bloodsucking, etc. Kind of refreshing actually.I could've sworn Jander Sunstar was in a Ravenloft novel or story...?? I loved it, whatever it was. (I think it had Strahd in it.) And while we're on the topic of vampires, I also read a story about a young FR noble (female, a tomboy) who went sneaking around some catacombs or a graveyard Show and got bitten by a vampire. The name |

| #15marius4Jun 13, 2009 3:07:54 | Vampire of the Mists by Christie Golden. Yes, yes! That's it! I found the cover online and it's the one I remember. Thanks for livin' up to your name--at least the Sage part! :D |

| #17phelf_der_zemitJun 13, 2009 9:53:41 | -Tell them it's a Spellplague Vampire, and that's why it can! Ah, the old stand-by. Never fails. Of course if it did it wouldn't be the stand-by excuse. And thank you all to the response. I agree that forgotten realms vampires seem the archtype vampire villan which is possibly why I like the idea so much (and when I say archtype I mean post 70s clean cut and seductor vamp out of a Anne Rice novel, not the creep origanol harry handed bad breathed demon.) As said before, very refreshing. |
| #18shoonviiJun 14, 2009 16:21:03 | Maiden Of Pain by Kameron M Franklin. But Saestra Karanok and that tale first appeared in the Old Empires sourcebook, and again in Lords Of Darkness 3e. |

| #21BadCatManJun 15, 2009 21:31:15 | Thanks a bunch for the novel tip! :D (Wow, I don't remember at all how Saestra fits into Maiden of Pain, though. I'll have to find my copy.) I don't think she did much, IIRC. We get her origin story at the beginning, then her belated revenge at the end, and maybe some cameos during the rest. On the main topic...Oh yeah! Forgot about that vampiric green dragon. Threskel actually, the little known land at the north-east corner of Chessenta, above Unther. Not far from Thay though, and influenced. |
| #22phelf_der_zemitJun 16, 2009 21:15:19 | Well as of right now I was just looking for the basic information. My main idea is to start with odd raids between the shipping routes of Darromar and Saradush, and Riatavin and Saradush in Tethyr. This will lead to a recently relocated Vampire Cabal in the nearby forest and/or spooky ruins. The exacts get fuzzy at this point. |
