| #1drakuldraequelApr 10, 2008 19:56:12 | After reading SotW 2 and having not read SotW 3, I am left wondering what is up with my fave Drow deity and his followers. Can someone send some news my way about the happenings after SotW 2?? I don't care if you have to spoil it for me, I'll read the book regardless. |
| #2lord_karsusApr 11, 2008 1:27:18 | -Read Book I of the Lady Penitent trilogy, Sacrifice of the Widow. That said, here's a brief synopsis of the part relevant to your query: Show -A group of Vhaeraunites summon a magical portal from the Material Plane to Eilistraee's domain. Vhaeraun teleports to the Material Plane, and goes through the portal, to sneak of on his sister, and kill her. But, apparently, Eilistraee kills Vhaeraun, and absorbs his power, as well as his clergy, becoming the 'Masked Lady'. |
| #3phelf_der_zemitApr 11, 2008 6:05:46 | The third book sadly, has not been released as of yet. Though I must say I'm waiting with abaited breath. |
| #4lord_karsusApr 11, 2008 6:25:02 | The third book sadly, has not been released as of yet. Though I must say I'm waiting with abaited breath. -According to Amazon.com, it is going to be published June 3, 2008. |

| #6lord_karsusApr 11, 2008 10:51:31 | I have already read SotW 1 and know that the event you posted has transpired. If there is no new info about Vhaeraun and his followers, then I guess I have to wait. -As I just posted, Ascendency of the Last will be published June 3, 2008. |
| #7zananApr 12, 2008 10:06:59 | It is one of the greater let-downs of the series that after finishing this and that god off, hardly anything is said about the remaining followers. The few remarks in TGHotR ain't help much either. |
| #8lord_karsusApr 12, 2008 10:13:35 | It is one of the greater let-downs of the series that after finishing this and that god off, hardly anything is said about the remaining followers. The few remarks in TGHotR ain't help much either. -Who's? Vhaeraun's, or Ghaunadaur's? -Or Selvatarm's and Kiaransalee's, for that matter. Though, with those latter two, it's a bit more simple, I think. Selvatarm's church was always controlled by Lolth's, so his remaining followers are just reorganized into Lolth's church. And, with Kiaransalee, her faithful don't remember her anymore, so...yeah... ![]() |
| #9zananApr 13, 2008 3:38:26 | -Who's? Vhaeraun's, or Ghaunadaur's? Ghaunadaur's worshippers are of no concern ... we will see enough of them in SotW III, given the notes in SotW II and TGHotR. Vhaeraunians ... What about those who said no to Eilistraee? What about the chaps and lasses in Cormanthor, those non-divine casters who have fought the Lolthites and Eilstraeens for all their lives? It would be simplicism at its worst to think that they simply switch sides and accept "Masked Ladies" casters amongst themselves. These are not just drow (i.e. paranoia personified), but also one of the most sectarian races of all Faerûn. It is far more likely that they simply cry herecy and send those traitor-priests to their new goddess than anything else (not to mention that a revamp of the hierarchy would be welcomed by non-divine casters). Selvetarm's faith was mostly made up of male clerics and divine casters, who are not possible or acceptable in Lolth's faith, so what of those male spiderswords then? Kiaransaleens ... you are actually wrong. The mega-cool spell cast erased solely the name "Kiaransalee" from the drow's minds. Nothing more, nothing less. Not a word is said about aliases, holy texts, runes and what have you, things which would be abound in the temples and shrines. As it is said to only affect drow who were in contact with Faerûn's faerzress (an Underdark (sic!) radiation) at the time ... what about those on the surface (mentioned in Champions of Ruin), or those on other planes (the Banshee Knights crusader order is said to roam the Planes frequently, who actually had their FR chapter house at the Acropolis of Thanatos - a place only inhabited by filthy, half-mad hags according to SotW II though)? The spell and the described effect simplified the whole scenario to very basic stuff and essentially stated the quite unreasonable effect. The latter stands - i.e. Kiaransalee vanished. Which would have made sense if all worshippers had gone, alongside all shrines and temples - e.g. Amaunator. Such as it is, deus-ex-machina at its worst. So what about those necromancers and priestesses who venerated Kia not just by her "real" name, but e.g. as The Revenancer, the Vengeful Banshee and the Lady of the Dead? They are not gone, probably just without divine guidance until one of the takes the Servant of the Fallen feat. But alas, 4E will cut all this unnecessary baggage off and cleanse the panthei ... no need to delve deeper into this mess. BTW, as I said before, nothing against Lisa, whom I still hold in high regard. It's more the basic idea by those in power who is oh-so annoying. |
| #10lord_karsusApr 13, 2008 9:24:28 | Selvetarm's faith was mostly made up of male clerics and divine casters, who are not possible or acceptable in Lolth's faith, so what of those male spiderswords then? -Lolth already controlled the church of Selvatarm to begin with, so there is no reason to believe that she is suddenly going to spurn them. I can guarantee they're just going to be folded into her church, and that's that. You know, for 4e "everyone can be anything they want, including male priests of Lolth". -And, as I am sure you do know, Lolth does indeed have some male priests, although they are not allowed to progress very far down that path, for social reasons. -I think it's fairly implied that in erasing Kiaransalee's name, it erased all of her names. |
| #11SmartPaladinApr 13, 2008 9:27:01 | Vhaeraunians ... What about those who said no to Eilistraee? Hoar. Oh come on, like he won't try to go for at least Kiaransalee's. Show up as a Male Drow to them... Tell them that their lost Goddess had sent him to them should she fall... Only problem with that, he'd have a Drow Name. But that's alright, the same deity being many different deities seem to be all the rage now. Trying to figure out how he'd get to Selvetarm's and/or Vhaeraun's faithful... But if he can manage to snatch up Kiaransaleen's, then what few Vhaeraunian and Sevetarm's should be easy. So long as he stays under the radar of Lolth... Hoar, get really cuddly with Beshaba. I mean REALLY. |
| #12lord_karsusApr 13, 2008 9:28:07 | Hoar. -Oh. Phew. For a second, I thought you were calling her names...:P |
| #13SmartPaladinApr 13, 2008 9:30:49 | -Oh. Phew. For a second, I thought you were calling her names...:P Not Kiaransalee! That woman creeps me out! Eilistraee? Sure... Naked Drow Female dancing around with a big sword? What's not to like? But Kiaransalee? No... Something about her love for undead strikes me as kinda... Creepy. |
| #14zananApr 13, 2008 10:23:26 | -Lolth already controlled the church of Selvatarm to begin with, so there is no reason to believe that she is suddenly going to spurn them. I can guarantee they're just going to be folded into her church, and that's that. You know, for 4e "everyone can be anything they want, including male priests of Lolth". Not since Faiths & Pantheons as well as Underdark specifically stated that there are no (as in: NO) divine casters of Lolth within the Realms. Of course, the Core material ignores this rule. -I think it's fairly implied that in erasing Kiaransalee's name, it erased all of her names. It is specifically said that they erased only her name, no other knowledge. Why they instantly tried the same with Lolth is of course another bone of contention. I mean, come on ... As with the above remark on 4E, it does not exactly matter what might be implied or what we think might be the case, we are left with only a few bits of info and I for one does not see any further information coming our way pre-4E. SotW III will most likely focus on the Eilistraeens, Ghaunadans and Lolthites. (It could well be that at some stage, the ex.-Vhaeraunian males will break the Eilistraeen's back at a vital point, screwing it all up much like their deity did before.) |
| #15lord_karsusApr 13, 2008 10:28:07 | Not since Faiths & Pantheons as well as Underdark specifically stated that there are no (as in: NO) divine casters of Lolth within the Realms. Of course, the Core material ignores this rule. -The Church of Selvatarm is controlled by the Church of Lolth. They are given limited soverignty, but like nearly everything else in a Lolth-dominated society, Lolth is the puppetmaster pulling the strings. Or, in her case, webs. I would consider the entire group an outshoot, a branch, of the Church of Lolth. It is specifically said that they erased only her name, no other knowledge. -An alias is also a name. That's just my interpretation, however. |
| #16zananApr 13, 2008 11:21:05 | -An alias is also a name. That's just my interpretation, however. No problem with your interpretation. Lisa moved this line of thought even further, as we all know. Now, just imagine that there is/were another shrine of Kiaransalee (of which we are actually certain) apart from the main temple at the Acropolis and a priestess doing her daily prayers. In comes Mr. Quarlynd and "blasts" Kiaransalee's name out of her mind. The temple is still there, the liturgy, scrolls, runes, holy text, you name it. The priestess will think "Now that was strange!" Maybe feel a bit dizzy too. Then looks on the sheet in front of her and whoosh ... all is there again. Even better, think of a necromancer worshipper of Kia. Who just happened not to think of her in that moment. And when the time of the day has come to do the daily prayer, she just opens her little shrine which depicts Kia and a rune with her name is on it too ... here we go again. For that worshipper (as well as all the lay ones) will not got mindblasted as those poor Crones at the Acropolis either - for whatever reason that was - bar effect, of course. Anyway, I actually not want to bring that all up again. It will be finished in SotW III one way or another and as this is near or already Spellplague time, the whole scenario does not interest me any longer. As they IMHO nuked the setting as such, I see no need to elaborate on the deicide here and there any more. |
| #17lord_karsusApr 13, 2008 11:53:07 | The temple is still there, the liturgy, scrolls, runes, holy text, you name it. The priestess will think "Now that was strange!" Maybe feel a bit dizzy too. Then looks on the sheet in front of her and whoosh ... all is there again. -Let me make up a deity...Blahblahblah. Blahblahblah is an ancient deity, worshipped by the Moo People. They lived long ago as well. So, you're on vacation in what used to be Moo Land, and you stop in some ruins. They used to be a temple. In clear wording that you understand, it says, "Here lies the entrance to the greatest temple of Blahblahblah." Does that really do anything for you? It's likely you'd shrug, or whatever, process that information, and move on. But, it does nothing for you. -I imagine it's likely the same thing happens with the worshippers who used to follow Kiaransalee. If her holy texts remained (and, personally, I don't think they would have, in so much as her name would be mentioned anywhere in them. Think ancient Egypt- her name has been fully stricken from everything) the former worshipper would see her name, internally process it, but shrug it off, as it mattered just as much as Blahblahblah mattered to you. -I'm not attempting to rectify and make sense of this. I agree it was a horrible and heavy-handed plothook, with plenty of holes. But...There's always a but. |
| #18zananApr 13, 2008 17:01:50 | Nope, LK. What you paint above is either mindblanking spell or something that involves hundreds if not thousands of years of time to forget the worship. Neither happened in the books. The only thing that was erased from the memory of the drow worshippers (heck, I actually forgot any half-drow or non-drow worshippers, who were not affected at all!) was the name Kiaransalee. That was how the Elven high magic spell was worded. No add-ons, no intricate wordings, nor anything else. SotW II, p. 290.. Far too many open ends left here. We only get the end result and even that is not satisfyingly described, as a deity as such is not just defined by his or her personal name. Anyway, we're straying from the topic and with regard to our little debate, SotW III or 4E will solve it sooner or later. And as it looks, no-one of us will be satisfied. |
| #19lord_karsusApr 14, 2008 7:04:02 | The only thing that was erased from the memory of the drow worshippers (heck, I actually forgot any half-drow or non-drow worshippers, who were not affected at all!) was the name Kiaransalee. Why did the protagonists forget who's temple they were assaulting, then? They weren't/aren't Kiaransaleeans. |
| #20zananApr 14, 2008 14:51:28 | -That's not true. Why did the protagonists forget who's temple they were assaulting, then? They weren't/aren't Kiaransaleeans. The spell addressed all drow through the faerzress, which was infused into them during the Descent-causing Elven high magic casting. Their ability to cast Faerie Fire (i.e. "Faerzress Fire", hence it is not called Fairy Fire) is a visible reminder of that. All in this very book. And Cavatina, like all the attackers, was drow. |

| #22zananApr 15, 2008 2:46:16 | -Then the memory of Kiaransalee was erased from just more than her "drow worshippers", as you stated to the contrary a few posts before. ;) Even if - of which I am not sure about, actually - it does not change the point. Erasing just the name from the minds of the drow - worshipper or not - does not erase aliases, the names in books temple walls et al. Neither does it affect those worshippers of non-drow blood, or those infused with faerzress by birth. It was not a large scale all round damnatio memoriae, hence, bound to fail and pretty quickly. Of course, as I said, SotW II saw it differently already and presented the end result. |
| #23lord_karsusApr 15, 2008 6:52:18 | Even if - of which I am not sure about, actually - it does not change the point. Erasing just the name from the minds of the drow - worshipper or not - does not erase aliases, the names in books temple walls et al. -As I stated before, I think it'd eliminate aliases as well. That's neither here nor there. And, sure, it wouldn't erase her physical name on structures and in texts (though, it might. It worked with Orcus, after all), what would a random name mean to a Drow, now? What does Blahblahblah, the ancient deity of Moo Land mean to you? Neither does it affect those worshippers of non-drow blood, or those infused with faerzress by birth. It was not a large scale all round damnatio memoriae, hence, bound to fail and pretty quickly. -Demihuman Deities says specifically that Kiaransalee's church is composed only of female Dark Elves. |

What does Blahblahblah, the ancient deity of Moo Land mean to you? Dunno what you are aiming at here, since all the above would only hold true if a complete memory-erasing had occured. Which did not - even though some (like you) might see it differently. That Cavatina instantly remembers where she is and what those Crones she faced were goes a long way to explain this very same notion. The erasure of the name. Obviously, for dramatic effect, the (apparently already mad) priestesses were totally mindblasted. -Demihuman Deities says specifically that Kiaransalee's church is composed only of female Dark Elves. You tell me?! Why might I have spoken of worshippers above, and not clergy?Well, I think I have done enough talking on Kia in here, and some of the ifs and buts. Enough for me at least. |
| #25lord_karsusApr 15, 2008 7:17:53 | That Cavatina instantly remembers where she is and what those Crones she faced were goes a long way to explain this very same notion. The erasure of the name. Obviously, for dramatic effect, the (apparently already mad) priestesses were totally mindblasted. -As I remember, Cavatina did not recognize all of that. She understood that she was in a temple, and that the former Crones were her enemies, and that she and the others were interfering with the Crones' ability to alter the Faerzress, but she did not recall Kiaransalee. You tell me?! -She is known only by Drow, and worshipped only by Drow, in the Forgotten Realms. |
| #26kiaransaleeApr 15, 2008 15:34:37 | Kiaransalee wasn't worshipped only by drow, but by Drider vampires & Draegloth too. Two of her clerics are drider vampire & Draegloth in the "City of the Spider Queen" adventure. |
| #27lord_karsusApr 15, 2008 15:38:29 | Kiaransalee wasn't worshipped only by drow, but by Drider vampires & Draegloth too. -Both of which can be considered Drow, as the base creature is Drow (Drow + Fiend and Drow + Twisted Magic). |
| #28zananApr 15, 2008 18:04:57 | -Both of which can be considered Drow, as the base creature is Drow (Drow + Fiend and Drow + Twisted Magic). Come on ... you're stretching the whole topic over and over again. Rest assured that I know the drow inside out, especially that faith. I gave you the page number to re-read the whole thing in its full glory again if need be. Draegloth are no drow, they are half-fiends. In that respect, I assume that you'd view Countess Sarya and her kin as elves rather than fiends too? DD does not state whether she is "only" worshipped by drow, but it does state that quite a number of her (FR) followers are active planescapers. As such, it is quite feasible that e.g. any returning Banshee Knight could resurrect her faith in no-time, as everything is still in place. It is also quite feasible to assume that those affected by the spell will not simply convert to another faith, but try to find out who "cursed" them. After all, we speak about drow here, i.e. paranoia personified. Anyway, I'll take a bow from this discussion, as all that had to be said has been said. At least as far as I am concerned. |
| #29drakuldraequelApr 15, 2008 18:57:44 | Draegloth are no drow, they are half-fiends. In Monsters of Faerun page 59, it states that Draegloths are indeed half-fiends that look like Drow. Standing at 8' in height with inky black skin and a knotted mane of yellowish-white hair. Technically, they are Fiend/Drow. |
| #30lord_karsusApr 15, 2008 21:38:38 | Come on ... you're stretching the whole topic over and over again. Rest assured that I know the drow inside out, especially that faith. -And I don't? ![]() Draegloth are no drow, they are half-fiends. -Gee, and what is that other half, that is not of Fiendish descent? |
| #31SmartPaladinApr 16, 2008 1:23:57 | -Gee, and what is that other half, that is not of Fiendish descent? Would you believe sweet and sour chicken? |
| #32zananApr 16, 2008 3:22:54 | -And I don't? That's a question you can answer to yourself. -Gee, and what is that other half, that is not of Fiendish descent? Does not matter. BTW, going by lore, in this case the draegloth' full description in Champions of Ruin, they are not drow or able to use anything drowish as if they were drow. The latter would have been mentioned (as it is with other half-fiends or the like, e.g. fey'ri ("Elven Blood")) and while we are at it, the 'even further from their outsider parents removed' planetouched like tieflings, genasi or aasimar are not considered human (etc.) either. |

They don't even have any gender! They FAIL |
| #34KhaeliethApr 16, 2008 6:32:09 | And i'm siding with Zanan here; they're mechanically not drow, driders or draegloths. And they lack fiddly bits... *Sigh* |
| #35lord_karsusApr 16, 2008 8:03:58 | That's a question you can answer to yourself. -Indeed. Does not matter. Actually, that Lore you mentioned, only stats one Draegloth and not the Draegloth as a whole. Better stats for every Draegloth can be found in Monsters of Faerun page 59. | #37KhaeliethApr 16, 2008 9:14:40 | -What is a 'fiddy bit'? Do we really want to know what a fiddy bit is? Fiddly! And it's genitalia (and some might add breasts to this, i do!). Perhaps female driders have partial fiddly bits... |

| #39zananApr 16, 2008 11:59:21 | Actually, that Lore you mentioned, only stats one Draegloth and not the Draegloth as a whole. Better stats for every Draegloth can be found in Monsters of Faerun page 59. The lore you state is from a 3E source, the book I mentioned is a) more detailed and b ) (and more importantly) 3,5E and thus up-to-date. Rest assured, I own both books, so no need to violate any copyrights. BTW, the Fiendish Codex I is a good source for decent yochlol, not the weak ones of Monsters of Faerûn. Looking at the last posts (not least by you, LK), it seems that the arguments run ever thinner. Re fiddly and LK's "a-ha" ... never mind what a Celtic supporter says! ![]() |
| #40drakuldraequelApr 16, 2008 12:23:55 | I am not violating anything. I simply stated what is said in both books. Yet again, the stats in Champions of Ruin are for that one Draegloth. That does not make it so for every Draegloth. Stating that the stats for every Draegloth have been updated in Champions of Ruin is a bit pre-mature. I, too, have both books and it only has the stats for a certain Draegloth. P.S. My offer still stands to have screenshots posted of both pages from both books to show you your errors. |

I am not referring to the NPC draegloth in the back of the book. |
| #43drakuldraequelApr 16, 2008 16:38:25 | My bad. I didn't seen them under the Races section. However, it does say that they resemble impressively large Drow with a mane of long white hair. Nearly the same description on the previous book I mentioned. Some of the things may have changed since the first statting, but the Draegloth's overall appearance remains the same. P.S. I must add that I love the fact that they are turniong from Lloth and seeking Vhaeraun. |
| #44zananApr 16, 2008 17:07:54 | My bad. I didn't seen them under the Races section. However, it does say that they resemble impressively large Drow with a mane of long white hair. Nearly the same description on the previous book I mentioned. As I said, if they were drow or considered close enough, it would have been mentioned (see fey'ri). IMHO, neither in description nor depiction do they look anything close to a drow. P.S. Some might have turned allegiance during the Silence, but by now, as you may know, they have had a rude awakening. You have read the Lady Penitent series, I assume? |
| #45drakuldraequelApr 16, 2008 17:19:14 | Yet, it is mentioned that they resemble imprssively large Drow as it has been stated in both books. It may be your opinion that they don't look like them, mine is that they do resemble Drow. Its simple biology. Yes, I have read Lady Penitent 1 and 2. It can be slightly safe to say that those that have turned from Lloth, will still remain dissatisfied with her. |

It may be your opinion that they don't look like them, mine is that they do resemble Drow. Its simple biology. I'd assume that the designer or artist had a bad day at the office. All the pictures of those beasts as well as any other description bar that in the racial entry show about a likeness to a drow as a displacer beast would have. A drider's upper body looks like a drow, there's nothing on a draegloth that would remotely remind me of them though. How the designer saw that is anyone's guess. Though I could assume that after they were created a picture was placed on the creature afterwards, a picture which was not made according to the inital idea but was still fancied by the designers ever since. But that just MHO. |

For this ain't the correct place to do this, nor to place any youtube links utterly unrelated to this board. In any case, as always, we welcome the chase! NB: How'd you rate Robson's kung-fu style attack on Dailly after 30 secs? |

Yeah, know what you mean=) But wasn't exactly kung-fu, but was a yellow card, but hardly worse than Cuellar's "save." But anyway, back to Vhaeraun! You stated earlier what his followers are gonna do, seen as they've sorta butchered Lolthites and Eilistraeaans with equal fervor before. Who are they gonna follow? The Masked Lady just doesn't hold the same appeal. |
| #52SmartPaladinApr 17, 2008 18:22:49 | Yeah, know what you mean=) Hoar. Why doesn't anyone listen to me? Though Mask stands a better shot. And he's used to showing up in many different forms. |
| #53KhaeliethApr 17, 2008 18:38:34 | Hoar. Why doesn't anyone listen to me? Well, they're not nihilistic enough to go over to Hoar, but Mask could be a possibility... But it's a real mess. |

How many Drow Males have gotten the short end of the stick because of the Females? Ya know, after typing that... Shar sounds like a better choice... |
| #55KhaeliethApr 18, 2008 6:34:52 | Ya sure about that? How many Drow Males have gotten the short end of the stick because of the Females? Well, Vhaeraunites haven't really, unless they've just fled the Underdark |
