Just passed through my mind today. What would Victorian age adventurers from say, TSRs old Masque of the Red Death setting make of today's forgotten realms? How well would spellcasters from that setting catch on to the realms' magic?

Would their blackpowder really make that big of a difference? The realms seems to have a decent amount of black powder compared to other fantasy settings already. Would the Zhents sell their own mothers for a crack at a navy revolver (assuming they havent sold her already of course)?

What would the average citizen of Waterdeep make of some Victorian british?

-Don't know anything about Masque of the Red Death, so I am envisioning a la The Alienist.

-Anyway, no reason to say that an investigative-type character would not fit into the setting. The part with the gun won't go over well, as gunpowder does not exist (or presumably function) in the setting, but, even with that, as a DM, you can ignore that quite easily.

Goes over pretty well from my experience with it. Though the noble libertines that make up Waterdhavian nobility absolutely scandalized them (despite having been the inventors of modern pornography and drug trafficking, not prostitution, the Roman Catholic Church beat them to that long ago) and they had to leave town quickly after telling a few clerics that they were pagan blasphemers who needed to come to the Church of England to save their souls (remember this was the era that really started the widespread idea of missionary work for laity and the whole White Man's Burden concept)... that was really fun. :D

The guns of the Mask setting with luck packed a pretty lethal punch. Any 6 on a d6 got rerolled and added to the total. So a 2d6 pistol could pull off 4 more damage dice. Love that rule.

-No. The "cosmic balance" of physics in the setting prevents gunpowder from working. There exists Smokepowder, which is similar, but inherently different.
