Is it true that Warforged may be part of the Forgotten Realms, since the FR books came out before the warforged race?

Warforged are of Eberron, having a unique history tied to that setting.

There are ways to import a warforged into the Realms, but there are no warforged native to the Forgotten Realms.

In the Grand History of the Realms, page 95, there is talk of a bloodforge similar to the forges mentioned in Eberron that produced an army of golems. It's not impossible to assume that the Five Kingdoms were conquered by Warforged.

Typically, things like Blood & Magic have not been canon, though I suppose the mention of it in GHotR now makes this a somewhat disputable.  This is an unfortunate mistake, because the golems they create can reshape themselves into buildings or other items... like a Transformer.  It's pure bizarre silliness, really.

However, even if it is considered canon, I'm pretty sure the bloodforges used mana to create golems without free will, and they are tied to some kind of control key for the bloodforge.

Actual warforged, on the other hand (from Eberron) aren't just mana golems but sophisticated and sentient magical constructs with "circulatory systems," "skeletons" made up of magic-imbued materials, and "musculature" and "skin" made of magically enhanced wood, stone and metal.  They're created through ritual, not spewed out of a device, and require air and rest periods.  It's unclear whether or not they have "souls" but they definitely have a mind and personality that can become quite complex over time.

While there isn't really anything to sustain the belief that warforged (as we know them from Eberron) are canon in the Realms, I don't think there would be any problem with them existing in the Realms for someone's specific campaign.

The bloodforge was a way to create golems and has the make-up Jorunhast described. They don't resemble warforged the way they're presented in Eberron, so I'd have to say it's only a possibility that a non-sentient warforged existed.

In my own Realms, warforged (like those in Eberron) creation was a secret passed down from Gond during his stay on Lantan during the ToT. They were created and after a decade of constant servitude, revolted. No one knows how or why they gained sentience (some believe Gond was furious with the Lantannese people for using his creation in such barbaric ways) but it's still debated.

It really comes down to if you want Warforged in your game or not. Unless your looking to create a pure canon game (which is impossible) then I guess you can use the Blood-forge idea and have them gain sentience another way or create one up all your own.

Warforged are allowed as PC's in Living Forgotten Realms. However, how to explain them being there can be an exercise in creativity: from another plane, relic of Imaskar or Raumathar, terracotta soldier from Kara-Tur, Basal Golem from Bloodforges in the Utter East, remnant of Nirvana/Mechanus/Archanus, Maug-lette, crafted by Geppetto, etc.

My own preference is to say they were Gondsmen created before the sinking of Lantan.

You could say that Warforged came from Undermountain. They were the creations of one of Halaster's apprentices, The Metal Mage. He was creating an army to attack Waterdeep, the Lords discovered the plot and attacked him before his army was ready. So many creative ways to spin it.

Have fun and good gaming...

My own LFR warforged is a relic from the Crown Wars.  He's a golem created by the Ilythiiri to make war on the Aryvandaars.  He fell in battle, and went dormant for the next 11000 or so years until now, until he woke up and forgot everything.

There's many ways to fluff it, I think.  You don't need to work under the assumption that your warforged was mass-produced.

There were sentient golems in the Realms, such as Stardeep's Cynosure.

Descriptions of Cynosure make me think more of an android or computer than a golem.  Which, depending on one's tastes, arguably don't belong thematically in the Realms.

In my Realms campaign, the warforged heve been introduced, and they were originally creations of Trobriand, the Metal Mage.

(But, Trobriand lost his mind and body in the Spellplague, and his consciousness was whisked into a metal body by contingency magics, and he lost his arcane powers, so he made a deal with Asmodeus for power and is now himself a warforged infernal pact warlock who calls himself "Doom"... and that's just the tip of the plot-iceberg.)

Again, this is all non-canon, but here are some other ways they exist in my Realms:

Trobriand made the original living constructs (warforged) in the decade before the Spellplague - the product of centuries of research. In the century since, a few other other wizards, clerics, and artificers have been able to recreate the design. Clerics of Gond sometimes create them and call them Gondsmen; they can often be found guarding temples or assisting priests with tasks such as manual labor. Some folk of Lantan were able to survive the sinking of their lands by transerring their souls into construct bodies and walking along the floor of the Sea of Swords to the Sword Coast; most of these few Lantanese living construct refugees have settled in Baldur's Gate.

The living constructs (most often simply called "metal men" instead of "warforged"; Doom calls them "doomforged") should be rare, but they can certainly be out there.

I made a warforged character for LFR.  I explained him along the lines of Alphonse Elric (from Fullmetal Alchemist).  A living soul fused with a construct.

This is pretty much what I did,  though my Lantan is still alive and well, just Underwater (think Atlantis).

In my Realms, Warforged are also found all along the Sword Coast, The North, Western Heartlands, and most notably Aglarond. Shortly before the Spellplague, The Simbul was warned that something catastrophic was going to happen and that it was possible the undead legions of Thay might muster the strength to invade Aglarond with ultimate success.

So the Simbul went looking for an army. What she found was a small island a few hundred miles south of Lantan which housed over 30,000 Warforge/Gondsmen that were barely getting by. She offered them a better home, respect, and a purpose of protecting Aglarond's borders against the evil threat of Thay. All but a few hundred accepted and she helped procure their transportation and teleportation to their new home.

Nice, reminds me of the Phyrexian/Urza wars of Magic.

May use this if a player wants to play a Warforged, or even just the idea, my current campaign will make the threat of Thay and Larloch something very real, ideas for some reinforcements are always welcomed.

IMC, they're basically Gondsmen but based on an earlier design by the Raumathari (sp?).
