I am currently researching something as described in Lands of Intrigue as the "Waterdeep Curse", where royal members from Tethyr are murdered while travelling to Waterdeep. Below is a short summary of what I have gathered.
"During the last centuries royal members from Tethyr that has travelled to Waterdeep has faced a bloody death. In 1274 DR, seven princesses from Tethyr was killed in their sleep by mimic grubs disguised as pillows and in 1288 DR, princess Shaerglynda was murdered by a petty thief while staying in the City of Splendors. Further, in 1295 DR, King Jaszur from Tethyr was killed on his way home from Waterdeep by a group of bandits after some successful negotiations between Waterdeep and Tethyr. These deaths have been known as the Waterdeep Curse, where royal members of Tethyr die a gruesome death if they travel to the City of Splendors."
Are there any more information you know about this Waterdeep Curse? Have any other royalty travelled to Waterdeep, died or survived? How are the relations between the two now? (third edition)

I always read the "curse" as semi-coincidental. Away from Tethyr, the nobles were more easily gotten to by rivals whose advances would have been more closely guarded against in Zasesspur, Ithmong, etc. It could be an adventure hook involving paid assassins - the Shadow Thieves, perhaps, or the unseen, or one of the City of Splendors' other dark factions, but I saw this as a curse only in the same way that the Chicago Cubs are "cursed." And no, i haven't seen reference to this anywhere besides the Lands of Intrigue set.
I'm fairly certain that the Royal Regalia that disappeared during the King Jaszur incident was kept hidden by the Harpers/Khelben until a 'fit' candidate could take the thrown.
Which happened when Elminster's scribe Lhaeo (Prince Haedrak) re-took the thrown. AFAIK, that has effectively lifted 'the curse', which was nothing more then several groups working toward spoiling relations between Waterdeep and Tethyr, and not a real curse at all.
A strong bond between The Lord's Alliance (Waterdeep) and Tethyr would put an end to many an evil scheme along the swordcoast, and this is why so many different groups oppose it.

I was about to suggest the same thing.
It could be a real curse, but it need not be.I think it is mentioned briefly in one of Elaine Cunningham's novels, I think The Dream Spheres, since one of the villians is playing at being a member of the defunct (at that time) royalty of Tethyr.
