| #1GavinfoxOct 13, 2010 1:39:35 | Hi there, I was wondering, canonically, what the best cities, oh, five or so in the campaign setting presented in the 3.X books for setting up a magic item business would be, as well as the best cities for doing adventurer style 'quick sales', which is what I presume that 50% price for looted items comes from. This would be DR 1350+, pre spellplague (the DM is going to branch from canon with regards to all the spellplague and tons of gods dying in the late 1370's, 1380's. The specific year isn't really defined too heavily). Ideally, the main idea is they have a large density of wizards, good access to trade and expensive trade goods and gems, lots of powerful adventurers with money to burn go there, and it has a huuuuge population and a lot of demand, and that has a banking system (so presumably some Lawful institutions, access to credit, etc.). Also, it would hopefully be fairly cosmopolitan, with a wide variety of races, and fairly well written up in books and setting materials and stuff. Also, it'd be nice if it specifically a culture that wasn't terribly upset about the idea of magical and mundane innovation! Maybe if it specifically had a lot of temples useful to this sort of mindset, or some wizard's guilds or whatever would be nice... So far I've got, uhhh, Waterdeep. And that's about it... does anyone have any suggestions, or guidelines, or places to look? What are the cities with the largest population on Toril that are also wealthy, trade-filled cities in general? Thanks! |

WAterdeep(port city) Silverymoon( trade hub) Baldur's GAte(port city) Neverwinter(port City) Luskan(port City) AThkatla(port City and capital of Amn) Calimport( I think it was a port, trade hub) Suzail(port city and capital of Cormyr) Westgate(free citry and port, I think) Mithril HAll(dwarven mining city) Citadel ADbar(dwarven fortess city) Myth DRannor( capital city of cormanthor) Phlaan(port city) these ought to do the saying any port in a storm... is true in moire ways than one and if its a port city you can sell things there, if its a big enough city on a trade route, you can sell things |
| #3GavinfoxOct 13, 2010 15:23:02 | I can't find anything on Phlaan... |
| #4sfdragonOct 13, 2010 15:38:16 | Phlaan lets see, if it can be found somewhere or you can get a buddy to show you it.Poll of RAdiance showed the city. the FRwiki might have some info on it. and I think one of MAtt James' DDI articles featured the city as well. miond you it was an adventure. but from memory it is a port city on the moonsea northern banks. Zhentil keep's is on the western banks, hillsfar is on the southern bank. |

| #6sfdragonOct 13, 2010 15:52:11 | yep I mean Phlan excuse typos.... |
| #7Doombringer_of_HoarOct 16, 2010 1:24:07 | I'd stay out of cities with Red Wizard Enclaves, they might get upset at someone for setting up shop in the area. |
| #8The_SilverswordOct 18, 2010 1:35:41 | Well, which cities had Red Wizard enclaves in them? |
| #9jasonvarounisOct 18, 2010 5:46:22 | The Red Wizards of Thay had major enclaves in and around Thay, and their influence spread far enough to completely encompass the Sea of Fallen Stars. The Reds rarely ventured furtehr West than that unless they had a good reason. Amn and Athkatla would be interesting. The Cowled Wizards keep the use of magic in strict check in that area. To avoid trouble, you'd have to shell out an ungodly amount of gold for a permit to sell magical goods. Even then, the Cowled Wizards would be constantly sending their "taxmen" out to demand payments and confiscating your most valuable wares. You could pay them off, or you could try and do things secretly, running an underground front for smuggling magic items in and out of the area. Also, don't forget that trade in Toril goes far beyond the Primes. There are just as many major cities and trade routes through the Underdark, and races such as the Githyanki and Djinn are known for peddling valuable goods throughout the elemental demi-planes and the Astral Sea. |
| #10StiggerOct 18, 2010 13:10:52 | During the time period in question, the Cowled Wizards had virtually no power in any official capacity within Amn, and the merchant princes of that particular blight on the face of Toril were willing to pay considerable amounts for magic when it could be found, particularly I'd guess if it wasn't Calishite in origin. So I'd guess that Athkatla and Murann, among other cities there, would be great places to sell stuff, provided you could do it discretely and not attract the attention of the Shadow Thieves in the process. Other than that though, anywhere that was mentioned as a metropolis would probably get you a relatively decent price for things, or at least somewhere with an active mage's guild or academy. |
