| #1scipion_emilienApr 09, 2009 11:52:41 | I'm just curious to know what happen to the harper in 4e, and thus how I could convert one of my old PC to the setting (who was an harper). I have the FRPG and well there's is no mention of the harper at all inside. |
| #2quale1Apr 09, 2009 12:02:47 | they disbanded nearly a century ago, only the Everlund branch survived and reformed, only dedicated against the Shades now |
| #3scipion_emilienApr 09, 2009 12:22:10 | Thank you. I'm dissapointed to learn that, but I guess it's the time that some PCs change this state of affair. |
| #4MattDrozApr 09, 2009 12:34:03 | What? And go against canon?! The very tought! ;) |
| #5one_who_knowsApr 09, 2009 15:28:56 | Harper have broken and reform many time since it was founded. for that I am remember. They always start again small and grow before. It not new but it have room to player grow. |
| #6lord_karsusApr 09, 2009 15:58:10 | -The information is available in the FRCG, and wasn't there a preview article that was released before the 4e book? |
| #7scipion_emilienApr 10, 2009 10:07:40 | Well I don't follow the preview articles. What is important to me is what book I have in my hands. But still if you want to post a link, I looked at it. |

| #9Dark_Wizard_02Apr 10, 2009 23:04:37 | Someone not too long ago, before the announcement of 4E, complained that the Realms lacked any setting-spanning, player character-friendly organizations save for the Harpers, unlike Eberron with the Dragonmark houses. It was noted that while many "good" (that players could join as a good or neutral party) organizations existed, most were local. Oddly, many evil organizations did have wider, multi-regional ambitions and influences. |
| #10faraerApr 11, 2009 0:40:32 | Naturally, those driven to establish and seek leadership in Faerûnwide power groups are often megalomaniac villains with grandiose plans. The presence of the 'setting-spanning' organizations has been greatly exaggerated in Realmslore (giving rise to yon plaintant's expectations); more local groups are more influential and more prominent in people's lives. |

Oddly, many evil organizations did have wider, multi-regional ambitions and influences. Well if that's true, then why nuke the only good organisation? And the harper with their cell base structure mesh particularly well in a decentralized setting like the new realms. As for the evil spanning organisation what happen to them? I know that the thayans mage get nuked too, but the Zentharim? |
| #12Mr_MiscellanyApr 11, 2009 11:22:48 | The Zhentarim are found most frequently around the southern Sword Coast and on the Dragon Coast near Westgate. They have strongholds throughout the northwestern parts of Faerûn. Darkhold is still completely under their control. The organization is still led by the vampire lord Manshoon, from his castle Stormwatch near Westgate. Vampire Lords comprise the majority of primary leaders within the Zhentarim, though few know this fact. Arcanists and wizards (known as Black Cloaks) comprise the leadership of individual groups or cells and enact their own devious plots. Evil priests, lesser arcanists, mercenaries and other professional soldiers fill out the roster of individual cells that are lead by the Black Cloaks. These groups interface with the Black Network, which is itself comprised of the various prominent merchants and other moneyed individuals. The Church of Cyric influences the Zhentarim greatly. |
| #13lord_karsusApr 11, 2009 11:23:15 | As for the evil spanning organisation what happen to them? I know that the thayans mage get nuked too, but the Zentharim? -Still around, though they're more factionalized now, and Cyric has asserted his control again. |
| #14markustay63Apr 11, 2009 11:40:47 | Zhents and Harpers could... theoretically... grudgingly work together now, especially considering they both hate the Shades with a passion. Given that both groups have received major set-backs during the Plague-era, it stands to reason that Harpers (being the covert, information-seeking types) would use Zhent mercs to take-out unfriendly targets.Well if that's true, then why nuke the only good organisation? And the harper with their cell base structure mesh particularly well in a decentralized setting like the new realms. Because the PCs are supposed to be "in the spotlight" now. The only thing standing between the many powerful and diverse evil groups and 'world' domination' are your little band of level one characters. Good luck with that. ;) |
| #15scipion_emilienApr 11, 2009 11:58:00 | Gaaaah not Cyric on Zhentil keep!! Cyric is in my opinion the most overated vilain of the realms... I just don't like psycho murdering sociopath as being something important that will construct a story. The greatness of the PC can only be build with a great adversary. And PCs in general tend to use it as a justification for their murdering spray. (Either because they are from Cyric or suspect a cyriquist in disguise)Zhents and Harpers could... theoretically... grudgingly work together now, especially considering they both hate the Shades with a passion. Given that both groups have received major set-backs during the Plague-era, it stands to reason that Harpers (being the covert, information-seeking types) would use Zhent mercs to take-out unfriendly targets. I have nothing against the fact that Harper work grudgindly with one another, But against the shade.. I have just that feeling that they are the "yuuzhang vong" of FR, tact on because we no longer have any ennemies for the heroes and we need something bigger than what we already had. Perhaps I don't know them enough... Because the PCs are supposed to be "in the spotlight" now. Which then show an imbalance into the decision taken for the setting. While I have nothing against the fact that the PCs are the stars of their own organisation and saved the world, it just become ridiculous when this is your group against the thousands others groups of evils peoples. And from a metagame perspective, it's great to have a minimal choice in philosophy to choose from. At least it give plot hook for low level: twart the locals agent in your town from all the evil organisations. |
| #16markustay63Apr 11, 2009 12:01:26 | Logical, balanced settings are a thing of the past. They don't need to make sense from a socio-political point of view, they just need to provide players with hours of enjoyment. I hope that was neutral-enough for everyone. It IS just a game, so I can see their point... kinda... |
