What happens with those "gifted" with spellfire in 4E ?

Hey All,

I was wondering if somebody knows what happens with those who are gifted with true spellfire in 4E? In 3E spellfire wielders where simply walking rods of absorption but I can't find those in the PHB... so those who have ideas... give it a shot... Maybe spellfire wielders go mad themselves... or just maybe they will play a mayor role in the realms because they are the only ones that still have magic energy (in their proper bodies) and are ideal to learn others cast spells... I'd hate to see true spellfire dissapear because it was always an interesting way to get players involved in a campaign...

looking forward to your creative thoughts!

My guess? They blew up during the Spellplague and no longer exist. As they they are trying to control "somewhat" pure magic, they are bound to be toast when Mystra gets snuffed.

Still think existing users of spellfire should get blown up though. Only makes sense.

Maybe that's what happened to the nation of Halruaa. There were big conventions of spellfire users in Halarahh and Halagard when the Spellplague hit... =BOOM!=

Well, consistency is up for debate, but I personally think spellfire makes much more sense in 4e than 3e. There seems to be a much more solid foundation for it.

By the same token, the exact opposite might be true.

I always looked at Spellfire as the gift of being able to wield Raw Magic, not that sifted-through-the-Weave Arcane crap.

If thats the case, then they would have been one of the few groups still able to use magic effectively when the Spellplague struck, and many of the 4e 'traditions' that have been established over the past century could have come from the various Spellfire users establishing their own schools early on.

Bear in mind that this is a natural talent, and not the same as 'Blue Fire' that Chosen get from Mystra - THAT would have indeed went 'BOOM!"

Also, this was briefly discussed in the Designer's thread, and I had suggested Spellfire be a type of warlock pact in 4e - a pact with magic itself, perhaps. It works much more like a Warlock's 'Eldritch' powers then a wizard's spells.

Well, if you take MarkusTay's bit on this, there wouldn't be any. As they have enough control over the magic, blue fire wouldn't have affected them.

Actually, while reading the novels one could get the idea that this is something interesting. As in: very hero/ine-ish. The problem for the game is that it is a group experience. Having one chap or lass running about with such abilities will most likely result in discontent or envy. Hence, IMHO, they toned the whole thing down in 3E and AFAIK, outside the three novels, it was never ever taken up in game of fiction afterwards.

It would be very strange if the spellfire wielders would survive, given what happens to simple mages. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to have them running about after the Spellplague, as some sort of evolved-Spellscarred folk or the like.

The character choses 2 at will, 1 encounter, 1 daily at first level depending on what build the player uses. What role would a "Spellfire Wielder" be that is the million dollar question?

When I start a 15th century FR campaign this will definately be the case. And with the weave filter gone, spellfire energy is more easily shaped aswell. This will enable those spellfirewielders that survive to emulate all regular spells of the past to some extent...

The magic absorbtion powers of spellfire wielder users and the healing powers do prove problemetic in explaining the new arcane classes, unless the alpha 4th edition sorcerer has abilities just like that...

Rich did spill something about that first test version of the sorcerer. It'll be the 4e wildmage, who's casting tactics will change round over round depending on the wild surges they are experiencing each round.

No, I don't think so. Spellfire users had a unique natural talent for -shaping- raw magic. They could generate magical fire, they could absorb magic, and they could use it to heal people. It's perhaps better said that:

- a talent for spellfire allows direct access to raw magic -and- use it/shape it in very specific ways. Specificallly, to use damaging spellfire, healing spellfire, and absorbing magic.

- 4E mages are not spellfire users but rather have learned how to access the same raw magic -without- needing the Weave. They cannot do all the things spellfire users can, therefore they are not spellfire wielders. They wield raw magic, not spellfire.

-Spellfire is a manifestation of Raw Magic. Those born with the "gift" were able to manipulate Raw Magic, unlike normal mortals. Normal mortals would be killed if they came into contact with Raw Magic. This was the reason Mystra/The Weave existed in the first place- to act as an 'intermediary' between people and Raw Magic.

-Being as that now that the Weave has crumbled, and there is no explanation as to how, suddenly, anyone can interact with Raw Magic- when in the past, it would have been A) impossible or B) deadly- the only thing that makes sense in this situation is that suddenly everyone is a Spellfire wielder, which would allow them to safely interact with Raw Magic.

No Karsus, everyone is NOT a spellfire wielder just because it seems to make sense to you. If they are, then why aren't all of the new 4E mages able to heal people and absorb magic? It's because they're NOT spellfire wielders. End of story.

Think of it this way. If the Weave was a sort of filter or buffer for the volatile raw stuff called magic, then the Weave could be considered analagous to the refining process for gasoline. Gasoline is highly volatile, and you need certain rules and machines to be able to process it and use it effectively. Spellfire wielders simply threw pure gasoline at things -and- ignited it in the process, and they had the inherent ability to use its energy for other things (healing, etc). They also had a personal "tank" where they could suck in more gasoline and store it for later use.

That does not mean that everyone in 4E is now a spellfire wielder and suddenly has this "tank" or the ability to use it in very specific ways (healing, storing energy). Rather, without the Weave, people (mages) were forced to rethink how they could re-build their machines (rebuild their spells) so that they could utilize the raw form of gasoline (magic) in similar but not the same exact ways. Mages in 4E do not have the inherent ability to heal, nor do they have a storage "tank" because they cannot absorb raw magic. They just -use- raw magic, which they were unable to do before without the Weave. Even in the Byers' Undead series, Szass Tam has to have a period of relearning and rethinking to be able to use magic.

As to why spellfire wielders of the past could access this raw magic for their own use without using the Weave, it doesn't matter. Nature always finds a way.

But those spellfire wielders are granted the ability to manipulate raw magic, and we defined that as spellfire... Post spellplague mages manipulate raw magic aswelll, only with a more focused apllication to shaping spells instead of storing or lashing out with that raw magic.

Did mystra have control over who or what become spellfire users?

Spellfire wielders actually absorb raw magic to wield the energy as a weapon and can heal (rather badly)... 15 century mages manipulate raw magic. They are no spellfire wielders per se as they got to thier point by training in manipulating raw magic through force of will, rather than freak talent. But thier practical ways of dealing with rawmagic makes them resemble spellfire users at first glance. (in my mind the maniplation of the weave is more fluid... and a raw magic user more crude)

Many modern machines utilize gasoline. That doesn't make a car equivalent to a riding-lawnmower, or a jet plane.

4E mages had to re-learn spells so they could utilize the "gasoline" of raw magic.

Spellfire wielders can -inherently- utilize raw magic, absorb it, and use it to heal. They are a fundamentally different kind of "machine", even though they both use the same type of fuel.

Agreed.

Still it makes sense envisioning the new weaveless magic being more crude, and the spellfire wielder is technically a "crude mage" that doesn't have formal training in his abilities.

I am thinking on making a different school of mages on 15th century fearun, linked to the package of at will powers and some classfeatures. A spellfire themed school could easily be made by adding some healing classfeatures and later on absorbtion powers.

A poor necromancer, barely kept his zombies fed,
Then one day he was in a castin' mood,
And up through the ground came a bubblin crude.

Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's lost his hair,

So they packed up their horses and rode back to Shadowdale.

So... Aye. A tweaked warlock would fit a spellfire user, changing eldriths blast into a spellfire ray, and making a new "pact" resembling the abilities a spellfire user would have using raw magic. Give it a recharge mechanic to make it absorb spells to reuse and enhance their per encounter spellfire blasts. Powers of absorbtion tied to Con and power of healing to Cha and tweaked without skills in arcana or religion (so it cant cast rituals) but with streetwise and some armor proficiencies.

What kind of magics are there on the Realms anyway?

-Weave magic = Raw magic filtered, normal magic mages use
-Raw Magic = Well never heard of mages having this, as I recall reading in the novel Avatar, only gods are able to wield it.
-Spellfire = Read it in the books, some guys wield it...different form of magic perhaps?
-Goddess Magic/Silver Fire = Goddess Magic given by Mystra, kinda unique
-Anti-Weave = I dunno what this is really

So the Weave is gone...and only raw, spellfire and anti-weave are left...oh yeah, and about silver fire...If Mystra dies, does that mean that they also loose Silver Fire?

*ahem* *incoming joke, apologies*

Come and listen to a story about a mage named Jed
A poor necromancer, barely kept his zombies fed,
Then one day he was in a castin' mood,
And up through the ground came a bubblin crude.

Magic that is, Spellplague blue, spellfire-ish.

Well the first thing you know ol' Jed's lost his hair,
Party members said "Jed move away from there!"
Said "Cerulean is the color that says 'bail!' "
So they packed up their horses and rode back to Shadowdale.

Dalelands, that is. Expensive Sages. Elite NPCs.

Well, now its time to say good bye to Jed and all his kin.
Elminster'd like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in.
You're all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin' helpin' of his hospitality

Except he's mental now. Voices in his head. Wears no shoes.

Y'all come back now, y'hear?

-You want continuity? Yes, things don't just randomly change. You use the rules that have always been, and you don't make up things on the fly. Thus, everyone is a Spellfire wielder. New rules for the universe don't just randomly and arbitrarily manifest and change themselves. End of story.

No offense Karsus, but "everyone is a Spellfire wielder" simply doesn't make logical sense. The new 4E wizards do not have the abilities that define a Spellfire wielder, so they cannot be wielding spellfire.

Logically, it makes more sense to say that 4E wizards and spellfire wielders draw upon and use the same source of raw magic, not jump to the crazy conclusion that everyone is wielding spellfire. Spellfire is made from raw magic, just as healing spellfire is made from raw magic. It's the -user- not the source, that determines the difference. Just because 4E mages have figured out a new way to approach and use raw magic doesn't mean they use spellfire, it just means they've figured out a new way (sans Weave) to use raw magic. Given the changes to arcane magic in 4E, this would make sense. They've learned a new way.

-In Realmspace, interaction with Raw Magic results in death. Only those with Spellfire can interact with it, in a limited way. It is, still, even then, somewhat deadly to those who are able to "wield" it. Those are the laws of the universe. It's not that hard. Being as that now there is no more Weave, and everyone can interact with Raw Magic...

-I'm playing by the old rules, not the "new" rules.

Doesn't matter. Mages have found another way, other than spellfire, to interact with and draw upon raw magic. They learned a way, they figured it out, and it doesn't require that everyone is a "spellfire wielder".

Until now, precisely because of the Weave, there was no need or drive to do so. Necessity is the mother of invention, after all, and mages desperate to regain their lost magic could be pretty inventive.

As far as we know, magic has impermiated the earth. It could very well be that way that new mages are accessing magic.

-Lore that does not go against the grain of how the established universe works is fine. I have no problem with anything of that. That is not arbitrary. It takes into account what has been, and integrates that. This does not adhere to the establishes rules of the universe, however. It goes against the grain. We have a continuity problem here, and I don't like continuity problems (nobody should like continuity problems). Thus, I am irritated.

-Spellplague, maybe? That's been used to explain everything else.

Quite frankly, with respect to this above you don't really know two pieces of critical information, but you're making assumptions about them in order to support your beliefs. We don't really know:

* all of the effects on "the rules of the universe" after the Weave's destruction.
* the exact method for how the post-spellplague mages are accessing raw magic.

Therefore your assumptions about "everyone being a spellplague user in 4E" and "this is a continuity problem" are hardly the certainties you'd like to suggest. In fact, there is information that directly opposes your assertion that "everyone's a spellplague user", but you seem quite content to ignore it. Stubborn, much?

-The destruction of the Weave has no impact on the laws that govern Raw Magic. Raw Magic is a separate entity entirely from the Weave. It is the "outer layer" so to speak. The Weave was the "inner layer". Mortals are in the core. The "inner layer" can be removed without any impact on the "outer layer".

Hmm, perhaps the magic thats suffused the 15th century is not raw magic but just cosmic magic leaked from the other parts of ther multiverse. Raw magic still only can be handled by dieties and spellfire users. So raw magic still is lethal... Yeah this sounds right.

Wait.. Didn't raw magic power arcanum and other ancient spellcasting techniques? How does the lore treat arcanum and its interaction with dead magic zones (or the weave) and raw magic again?

The point is that the Spellfire Wielder, originally from the Magic of Faerun book, to which the OP is referring, is something completely different than a spellcaster in 4e. To refuse this is just plain ignorance.

Whether this Spellfire Wielder returns to 4e, I have no idea.

Yes, we know your stance. The point is you're arguing something else than the topic. The topic is the Spellfire Wielder feat presented in Magic of Faerun, and whether this ability will exist in 4e.
You are arguing that the basis of spellcasting in 4e is inconsistent with the previous lore (which may very well be true, I don't know).

No. As I stated earlier, I neglected to pay my cable bill and haven’t had it for the last day or so. I usually don’t care, ‘cause for the few days I’m without it, I am usually just using someone else’s wi-fi anyways, but this time people seem to have caught on and secured their networks. And, I don’t know if the humidity is playing that big of a *****, but even the open networks are a pain to deal with.

Spellfire can't absorb Pimp Slaps. Such slaps are too raw and powerful. Even good natured ones. ;)
